Here’s a first look at Tom Cruise taking on the hulking main character in the Lee Child novels for Paramount‘s Jack Reacher. It will be interesting to see the fan reaction to finally seeing Cruise as the ex-military policeman-turned-benevolent drifter who always finding himself smack in a situation where a helpless person needs someone who can put the clues together and kick butt when necessary. Some have questioned casting Cruise as a 6-foot-5, 250-pound bad ass. The movie, from Paramount and Skydance Productions, opens December 21.

Wow. Looks incredibly generic. I’ll pass on this one.
It is incredibly generic, or to be more specific…Tom Cruise generic without the running…yet.
Have read all the Reacher books, and this film (from the trailer) is not Jack Reacher.
Hope Lee Child is happy with the money as he has basically let his readers know he doesn’t give a shit about author/character integrity.
This truly sucks!!
Have 4th to Nikki and the DH team.
Interesting to see all the hateful sickies (below) who harp on height and apparently think we should cast Metta World Peace as Jack Reacher.
He has the build and surliness.
Would you complain then?
FASTER II!
Jack Reacher is a 5′ 6″ wimp who thinks staring intensely is intimidating? Wow, Cruise is such a bad fit for this role that it makes it his best comedic turn since Risky Business.
Tom Cruise is a great actor and I have liked most of his movies, but he is not even close to the first person that I would think of for this role. The actor that first came to my mind was Vin Diesel, he has the right look, build and most important the right attitude. I’m sure that there are others, so I wonder what in the world they were thinking. Did they even read the books?
when I look up “hulking” in the Thesaurus nothing that resembles Tom Cruise comes up. In the antonyms however…
I don’t get all the squealing about size and how “intimidating” and “hulking” Jack Reacher must be physically. Who wants to see a movie about a huge hulking hero “intimidating” the bad guys into submission? Most people want to a hero who fights his way out of trouble DESPITE his limitations, not because of his huge advantages. What fun would DIE HARD have been if Bruce Willis was 6’5″ and 250lbs and “intimidated” Hans Gruber to death?
Honestly. People are whining about the last shot in the trailer because Cruise looks small compared to five huge guys who look like they could kick his ass — EXACTLY! That’s the point — how is he going to get out of this? It’s a a dramatic question. Five guys trying to intimidate a human Godzilla is not fun or interesting.
Your comments suggest you have not read the books… ??
Read the books, and then you will know why people are ‘squealing’.
Um…wow that was a bad trailer and Paramount is usually good with there advertising.
The music needs to go. Sounds like Limp Biskit Mission Impossible music.
Otherwise, it’s cool. Cruise always gives his all, and I still remember when everyone went psycho over him playing Lestat and it came out and did gangbusters b/c he was awesome.
Haters will hate, and fanboys will act like silly boys. Lee Child owes you nothing. Get over it.
Jack Reacher? As in John Carter?
That’s NOT Jack Reacher…that’s Ethan Hunt pretending to be Jack Reacher…at least gruff up your voice, Tom…and don’t give me that metaphorical crap, he’s 6’5″, 250…there should never be a scene with him among five other guys all a foot taller than him, regardless of the outcome…and Jack Reacher doesn’t own a car…he’s a drifter who hitchhikes his way across the country…in One Shot he did drive a car, but it was a car he borrowed from a news reporter, I believe…it all just looks…AWFUL…I can’t believe Lee Child would willingly smear his name on something like this…such a sad turn of events for one of the best book series out today…
I totally agree! I am a huge fan of the Reacher series and was so upset when I heard that Tom Cruise, who I think is 5’3′ with lifts in his shoes would be playing Reacher I sent Lee Child an email via his website. I haven’t heard back. I pick up the last few books in the series to read them and I have to put them down. They should have picked Liam Neeson or somebody else with some acting talent and machismo. ARG!!
I’ve either read or listened to Audible versions of all the Reacher books. They need to put some 8 inch lifts into Tom Cruise’s boots and dub Dick Hill’s voice over his. Besides that, and a couple other things, Cruise is perfect.
What a shame.
Is Ryan Gosling’s character from Drive in the book??
That might explain the car.
yeah we’ve seen this movie before, its called “Rambo: first blood”
Who wrote this?
Koppelman and Levien?
Yikes. Looks like bad Mission Impossible outtakes. (No thanks to the music, either.)
It looks like a parody of a Tom Cruise movie starring the man himself. If it wasn’t so boring, it’d be laughable.
Was I supposed to laugh? Because I laughed. Was I supposed to laugh?
Even at 5’6” instead of 6’5”, I’ll see Cruise in anything. He’s batshit crazy in real life, but he’s phenomenal on screen. Just like Mel Gibson and directing.
true. he’s nuts in real life, i guess…if we’re going by tabloids word. but there is NO movie he’s cast where he is not bringing it. he’s committed to his craft.
I agree that Tom always gives 100% but I do not buy him in this trailer AT ALL. I didn’t read these books and I don’t know how big Jack Reacher is supposed to be. But this looks boring and fake.
I’d just like to say to anyone who thinks Tom Cruise isn’t tall enough to play Jack Reacher that Humphrey Bogart wasn’t tall enough to play Philip Marlowe either. But he did.
And nobody cared.
O, the height is not all. It’s the persona–which Bogart definitely had.
Hilarious!
Seriously that voice of his. SOoooo not a tough guy. “You think I’m a hero?” No I think your a nasally sounding twerp.
If you’ve read any of the Jack Reacher books, you will probably find it quite a “reach” to have Tom Cruise in this role. The absence of 6-feet-5 / 250 pounds is only the tip of the melting iceberg. It’s easy to be a hater though. Let’s see, maybe it will be a good popcorn movie (?)
I have not problem in general with Tom Cruise but that trailer was horrible. I am sure he will be fine in it but it came off like Mission Impossible. Jack Reacher’s size is predominate within the books being mentioned often. I understand why you would cast Tom in this role since he has been a big time box office draw since the 80′s despite that he is crazy. Something about the title One Shot and the character being named Jack Reacher sounds a bit perverse.
Lee Child doesn’t have a problem with Tom Cruise, so I don’t think that’s too big a deal. But I agree it’s a generic trailer. Was hoping for a good luck at Werner Herzog as the bad guy, which was a really inspired bit of casting.
I don’t think Lee Child has a choice. Cruise owns the rights to his book (One Shot), and Child naively sold them 7 years ago without any veto saying “I’m a novelist, I’ll leave the movie making to the movie people.”
I’m completely down for dropping cash for a ticket, some popcorn and a massive coke to enjoy a Tom Cruise Experience. His movies always feel familiar, and that’s OK with me, but this one feels too familiar and not in the right way.
I had the ‘pleasure’ of seeing this at a screening recently. I can’t even tell you how BAD this movie was. The entire time I kept thinking, “It would be so much better if Cruise wasn’t cast as Reacher.” Rosamund Pike did as well as she could – same as Duvall. And they needed Duvall to be in it more. The audience was laughing too. It was not a ‘must see’ by any means.
..yes, that’s why Paramount moved the film into the Christmas season after the great test screenings. please, be a hater and bag on the trailer if you want, but don’t lie about how the film has played.
The film was moved into the Christmas slot to fill a void left by WORLD WAR Z’s absence dur to reshoots. Do you think G.I. JOE was pushed back because it was so fabulous?
Awful. No matter from how low an angle you shoot Cruise, he still looks like an aging midget.
Tom Cruise is an amazing actor and great action star and have no doubt in my mind that he can pull this character off.
That’s what I thought, too. Until I saw the trailer. Cruise is a phenomenal actor who has pulled off a ton of roles I was skeptical about including Lestat in “Interview With A Vampire”. But this casting was a big mistake. It also looks like the writer’s approach to the character is off. Too bad. Was excited. Now I’m depressed.
That was the most unintentionally hilarious piece of film I’ve ever seen. You know Par is scrambling right now to figure out what do with this piece of dreck.
Tom Cruise is way too small & baby face to play 6’5″ 250# tough Looking Jack Reacher. What a joke…OMG!! Jack Reacher is a scary dude. Tom Cruise cant scare a fly…hope the movie bombs.
never read Lee Child’s books. I am aware that Reacher is supposed to be huge at 6 foot 5 inches. If I had read the books, that may have bothered me a little, but Tom Cruise is still awesome as an action star. He devotes himself to roles in great ways, like in Collateral when he learned how to operate a gun in a realistic way (never blinked when firing his weapon and quick draws as well). At least they didn’t select Arnold (too old) or some pretty boy like Channing Tatum or Gosling or one of them. Bruce Willis might have been good. Maybe Kurt Russell. Besides they usually make Cruise seem taller than he is.
This looks like a snooze. Who can take Cruise seriously anymore?
Looks like a Ben Stiller parody of a Tom Cruise movie.
i hate it when i see the line “the reaction online has been negative” to casting decisions. casting shouldnt be based on a few hundred moronic fanboiz who shit on everything and will see the movie anyway when it comes out.
Yeah, whatever happened to capturing the spirit of the source material? Most of what I’m hearing is “But Tom Cruise is short. A short guy can’t play Reacher because Reacher is tall and Cruise is short. You see, because the character isn’t short …”
