Toldja she was leaving… She keeps telling intimates she wants to perform and star in movies. But, seriously, how in demand is yet another 42-year-old singer-actress given the reality of showbiz? The story I posted yesterday said Jennifer Lopez would be leaving Fox‘s American Idol even though she was still in negotiations. Today, The Associated Press quoted Lopez’s spokesman as saying she is leaving Idol. (The rep is Fame Factory celebrity publicist Mark Young.) The latest media speculation about new American Idol judges for Season 12 include 2009 runner-up Adam Lambert, rapper will.i.am, Miley Cyrus, Fergie, and most recently Mariah Carey. (Lambert said: “If Idol wants to talk to me about judging, I’d be more than flattered to have that conversation.”) Katy Perry has revealed she said no to an offer.

As recently as Thursday, Fox execs told Deadline that JLo was still in negotiations: ”It’s complicated and fluid. It might get resolved very quickly or may drag on for another few weeks. All the usual reasons; money, schedules, desire to continue, and overall makeup of the judges panel.” Now JLo is the second judge in two days to say she’s leaving American Idol: Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler announced his departure Thursday. This morning Lopez repeated to Idol host Ryan Seacrest on his radio show almost exactly what she told The Today Show the day before: ”I honestly feel like the time has come that I have to get back to doing the other things that I do that I’ve put kind of on hold.” Clearly JLo had a script to memorize, milking her “maybe-I-am-leaving” moment as yet another publicity opportunity — this time to promote her voicing role in Ice Age 4 opening today.
No problem, her too-long 15 minutes of fame will be ending soon. Despite her presence or because of it, Idol registered its lowest-rated finale ever last spring. And immediately after News Corp COO Chase Carey told Wall Street analysts that “our challenge for next year is to put some fresh energy in” American Idol after “we probably didn’t do enough this year”. In terms of changes, Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly has promised “some creative tweaking” heading into next season after the show’s ratings “dropped more than anticipated” this cycle as “space got crowded”.

Idol.
Fork
Done.
They said the same thing when Simon left. Idol is much better then JHo or ancient Steven Tyler. It will still be the number #1 show of the 2012-13 season.
If it would be for one thing I would at least, and who knows about himself better than you, not make the choice for becoming an idol. As a matter of the meaning of the word the sory of idols is an endless one, and who would choose for that? Whatever we could need, wouldn’t that not be ‘the real dust”? #
She’s the reason I stopped watching. We want fresh, not fake.
She doesn’t sing live at her concerts and her acting is only so-so. “Who needs her?” is right.
My dream trio of judges for Season 12 would be will.i.am, Mariah, and Adam Lambert
Nooooooo!
No more so-so’s…
Let’s bring out the big guns. Music royalty… no spoiled fruit.
All 3 excellent choices!!! You nailed it!
My dream trio of judges for Season 12 would be Alvin, Simon and Theodore. (No, not THAT Simon…)
She’s a has-been. Her last decent acting was ‘Out of Sight’ and she’s been d-listed since Gigli. Maybe she should do a reboot of that or a CW show.
But wasn’t she just on Forbes list as the No. 1 most powerful person in the entertainment industry?
This is a case of trying to steal some of the Tyler-thunder from yesterday.
In my opinuion , she’s waffeld back-and-forth so many times, this official relaese seems rather ludicrious.
In fact, she should now stay not and really beat Tyler at his own game.
They’d be silly not to wnat to keep her … look at all the free ink!
Watch what happens!
sorry … SHE SHOULD NOW STAY,,,
I think a complete overhaul of the judges is detrimental to the show.
I agree 100%. Idol is a cash cow for Fox that they are not willing to kill until it has sufficiently bred a golden calf to replace it. They will find judges middle America loves – fresh industry faces that ooze talent, maturity and personality, or they will crash hard and burn long.
Just end the show.
Judges left.
It’s done what it wanted it to do.
With X Factor we don’t need Idol.
Just move Seacrest to there as host and done.
One big move would be to return to voice and stage-presence-skills only. No accompanying instruments. No more “white guys with guitars.” We’ve had three of these WGWGs in a row (e.g., Lee DeWize), and they’ve all sunk like stones. AI abandoned the system that brought us Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry. and as a result the show no longer produces Carrie Underwoods or Chris Daughtrys. It doesn’t even produce Kellie Picklers anymore.
A second move would be for all three judges to judge, using intelligible content. Their practice of heaping praise on mediocrity and ignoring mistakes made their roles meaningless. The reason Simon stood out, in spite of his needless cruelty, was because Randy and Paula usually said nothing. Paula would prattle, and Randy would lazily shout slogans.
Someone needs to tell Randy that he can’t just phone it in anymore.
A third move would be to make sure that the judges genuinely represent three different parts of the music industry. Simon (theoretically) looked at the performer from the business/marketing side, Randy looked at them from the audition-and-rehearsal side, and Paula from the stage-performance angle.
Randy will Not be a judge either.
He might hang around as a mentor but his judging days at AI are over.
Jimmy Iovine should be a judge.
But he won’t.
Wow GREAT ideal I want Jimmy Iovine to be a judge. He is great
No to Adam Lambert he would not be a good judge
omfg. Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry and Kellie Pickler (don’t know who she is, but know enough that she’s nothing) make we want to puke. You don’t know what music is.
Great career move, Jennifer?
“Gigli 2″, anyone?
Given the current runner-ups, I see no reason to watch the show. None of them are exciting options, in my opinion. I miss Simon Cowell. Real-world expertise on what makes a star.
Once you start sliding down down that abyss, it is quite difficult to pull yourself out. My opinion is they will go with hosts that attract that much sought after younger demo ( though most don’t watch tv anymore anyway). It’s all about ratings!
Piers Morgan
Jermaine Jackson (replacing Randy – the show always needs a judge named Jackson)
Chaka Khan
AI is pretty uneventful. JLo is done. Tyler is gone. Seacrest is expanding. Randy Jackson is smart. Stay put. Say the same multi-cultural, “Dude that was great” and collect the biggest check of his life. CURTAIN CALL!
will.i.am already did The Voice in the uk, it would be improbable that he would do another talent show
but nicole sherzinger is doing The X Factor in the uk after having been fired in the us
15 minutes of fame, oh please she’s been in the industry for more than 15 years.
Will.i.am is okayyyy kinda if idol wants to stay mediocre. Jimmy needs to move to judge. mariah would be great. Lambert would be a death nail. Horrible choice. Little experience to offer
What right would Adam Lambert have at judging other’s musical ability when he didn’t even win the show to begin with? The guy’s career has gone absolutely nowhere. What advice could he possible have to give?
I don’t understand why they don’t move Jimmy Iovine to the judge’s table. For the past two years he’s been the only person on that show who has given any kind of constructive criticism to the contestants.
losing lopez and tyler is probably the best thing to happen to this show. They need to start from scratch and rebuild.
It should have been cancelled when Simon left. Please just end it. No one buys the winners music and everyone forgets who won 10 minutes after the show. It is no longer relevant. The best thing that show ever gave us is Carrie Underwood. Please give it a proper burial and move on.
Could you please explain why Fox cares if the person who wins this show ever sells ONE CD? As long as American Idol continues to be a ratings monster and making money for the network it will be on the air. Are the ratings down? Sure. But they’re still ratings that the other networks would kill for. To sit there and say the show should be cancelled because some of the contestants don’t sell a lot of records is the dumbest argument ever. It’s a TV show, if it gets ratings, it’s going to be on TV.
And why do people who make this dumb argument act like Scotty McCreery doesn’t exist? Last year’s winner went PLATINUM. He’s sold well over a million records. The album has spawned two gold singles so far. He won the best new artist awards at the ACAs, the CMAs and the CMT awards. This dude is a MASSIVE superstar yet to you “No one buys the winners music and everyone forgets who won 10 minutes after the show.” Sorry, but the facts seem to disagree with you.
I’d take Ben Folds, Kelly Clarkson and will.i.am. They wouldn’t have any trouble giving critiques, or staying away from the phrase “yo, dawg”.
She’s on Duets, and you want her on Idol?
This feeds into the sexism of the industry by saying “how in demand is another 42 year-old singer actress”–like there are so many who are Latina and have had a string of some of the most successful rom-coms: The Wedding Planner, Monster-in-Law, Maid in Manhattan, even The Back-Up Plan and other decent independents like Selena. I like her for her humanity, that’s what people have responded to on Idol and with her films. She’ll succeed regardless, more power to her.
Yes. So tired of expirations dates being assigned to women. Talent is either there, or it’s not, regardless of age. Why doesn’t that matter?
“her humanity”???
She’s a freakin’ diva who only cares about her pocketbook.
Here career will be short lived post AI.
I wish this show would get canned ASAP. The crappy ratings are definitely due ALL of the three bozos judges. The karaoke-ish talent those judges were picking were pretty bad. $32M earned for the 2 seasons she was in, the Q Viva! Reality Show, a solo and a co-headlining World Tour with Enrique Iglesias…etc Jlo milked the exposure ion AI to the max!
If they are not going to cast me as a judge, then put in Jimmy as a judge instead of a mentor. Does not stat power per se, but he does not mince words and would make a great pairing with a current star.
amen to that! can they please put someone in the judges chair that actually judge? more honest and critical judges please.
