BREAKING… Jessica Biel has been cast as Viper in 20th Century Fox‘s The Wolverine. The Victoria/Viper character has a long arc in the X-Men mythology and is a juicy role in the film.
According to Marvel lore Viper bounces between good and not so good and she holds some sway over Wolverine but is mostly a foe to the X-Men and Avengers. It will be the second Marvel project for Biel, who also starred in 2004′s Blade: Trinity. She’s next up co-starring opposite Colin Farrell in Total Recall, which Sony is releasing August 3, and Pascal Laugier’s The Tall Man, due out August 31.

Jessica Biel would probably do quite well, and hopefully it will was the stink of Blade II from her.
Blade 3 (Trinity)
Blade lll.
If you get a chance see the Illusionist, she was brilliant.
Yes, she fantastic, as was Norton and the movie as a whole. Very underrated.
Good choice
We’ve all seen enough of superhero movies to know how “juicy” the female roles are.
Lemme guess….her suit is going to be skin tight, we’re going to see her slither in and out of it at least several times, maybe she’ll have a special vehicle like a motorcycle she’ll be bending over half the time….
Scarlett Johansson went from a sexy assistant in Iron Man to a serious part of the Avengers success. All without any super powers.
Uh, yeah, with her spandex ass dominating the poster.
Anyway, great for her that the role is making her rich(er) and famous(er), you could hardly describe the role as “juicy.” Except in extent her “juicy” assets were used to sell the film.
She wasn’t a assistant she was undercover under SHIELD to observe over Tony.
My thoughts exactly.
Yeah, when I think “villainess capable of taking on Wolverine” Jessica Biel’s the first person I think of…
Have you seen Jessica Biel in Blade?
She’s as much Viper as the White Queen was Emma Frost in Wolverine Origins.
I would have thought Viper would have been tied up in the SHIELD or Cap licences. Hope Fox actually has the rights to use the character.
You really think a major studio would make a movie without making sure they have the license or rights to do so?
Actually, it HAS happened; rights issues over WATCHMEN popped up AFTER it started shooting, and there have been a number of cases where movies were reworked shortly before shooting because rights had expired during the development process.
Happens all the time donkey…
Well, there goes any chance of the movie being remotely good.
Yup, unfortunately.
She’s the viper. She’s going to vipe the vindows!
I’d rather see Nikki Finke v. Bret Easton Ellis.
How does someone like Nikki, who is so influential, who can be so outspoken and acerbic, become such a litigious earth-scorcher whenever her name is spoken? The Nikki Finke story, whether it’s written this year or twenty years from now, will be very interesting.
Eventually you may want to reveal yourself a little, Nikki, or some writer is just going to fill in the blanks by making shit up.
She’s very professional, committed, and has much more talent than a lot of people give her credit for.
Some here might deride the choice as another “super hero babe in tight clothing” but that’s a traditional genre convention the same way that toned, muscular, and handsome heroes are. And — unlike many of her peers, Jessica has a physicality and athletic quality that helps suspend more disbelief in these action oriented roles.
This is good casting and a good role for her.
Agreed.
Hopefully this will be the movie to get the [positive] attention she deserves.
Oh Wolverine. It’s like you don’t want people to see you. At first – first movie was awful. Second – you hire some no-name actors as villains. Now Jessica Biel… You really want to flop do you? Who’s next? Blake Lively? Chase Crowford? Eva Mendes? Emile Hirsh? Taylor Lautner?
Rest assured that Fox, in it’s infinite ability to screw up a one-man funeral, checked the availabilities of all of the above.
What’s wrong with no name actors? That’s the problem with casting; choosing ‘big name’ people who’s celebrity will overshadow the character. And lets not act as if Hugh Jackman was a big actor before X-Men either.
Is this a refresh, reboot or re-imagining?
It’s a blatant money grab, if anything.
Sequel
Why does she keep getting cast? She should disappeared like the rest of the 7th Heaven cast.
This is odd, mainly because Viper/Madame Hydra belongs more to the Captain America/S.H.I.E.L.D universe, as she was the head of HYDRA, therefore, Marvel/Disney Studios would claim the character to be part of their universe rather than Fox’s. Maybe they have worked out some sort of deal in the same way as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver characters, which can be co-shared by both studios, as long as they cannot refer to other camp’s universes and vice-versa….
I like Jessica Biel a lot. She’s talented, gorgeous, and yes has a very sexy but also physical and womanly build that helps in action roles like this.
And not to geek out too much, but I’ve been a fan ever since she carried the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. It’s still very good, in fact the best of the glut of horror remakes that came around, and it was a very, very good performance for the genre. She doesn’t get enough credit, but I know it’s due to some of those regrettable “I get passed over for roles because I’m too beautiful” interviews she did a few years back.
I’m glad that between the Recall remake and the Hitchcock film her career seems to be coming back from the brink, because I think she’s a star.
Those of you out there who have read Bloodspiller, do you not agree that the main character and his epic adventures would be a fun Marvel franchise and a movie or mimi-seeies on Starz?
I think this is fine casting. Not many actresses out there with her ability / athleticism.
