EXCLUSIVE: While Andrew Stanton‘s live-action feature directing debut John Carter led to a precedent-setting $200 million write-down for Disney earlier this summer, the filmmaker is officially out of director jail. I’ve been hearing for months that he would come aboard to direct the sequel to Disney-based Pixar‘s Finding Nemo, with the idea that Disney would give him another shot behind the camera on a live-action film.
I’m told he’s now officially come aboard the Finding Nemo sequel and has a concept the studio loves. Pixar continues to not be helpful on this, as they don’t comment on development. It’s understandable why Disney and Pixar would be excited by this. Stanton won two Oscars for his animation work on Wall-E and Finding Nemo. That original 2003′s fish tale’s $867.9 million worldwide gross makes it still Pixar’s second-highest-grossing film and the third-biggest Disney animated film release ever. And that comes before Finding Nemo is re-released in 3D in September.
As for Disney coming through with another live-action project, I’m hearing that nothing is firm but that the studio is working on it. It looks like the studio is ready to give Stanton a mulligan on John Carter. Stanton, who has played a big role in many of Pixar’s hits going back to Toy Story, has an opportunity to put a big flop behind him and he’s certainly not the first director to have trouble out of the gate, as David Fincher did with Alien 3. Plenty of others failed the first time out and lived to fight another day and Stanton will get the same opportunity from the studio that has made a fortune off his successes.

I love his work for Pixar but John Carter really was a car crash – and I wanted to like it, I really did. Maybe if he pares it down and goes for family-oriented action adventure…
I watched the Indiana Jones films again recently and was reminded there’s a big gap out there. No one has taken the kind of thing that Spielberg cut his teeth on and made it their own.
I don’t know what movie you watched, but John Carter was NOT a car crash. Although it didn’t do well in the theaters, it was an excellent movie that I don’t believe people ever watched. I’m astounded and wonder to this day if most people slept through the movie. It’s the only explanation I come up with. Did you even SEE this movie?? I loved it and it amazes me what is considered a hit movie these days…Where are people’s minds at??
Liar. Did you even try watching that crap?! I wonder at the bold faced lies of PR people these days.
You have a sever taste deficiency lolz and you, too, simon. John Carter was the most entertaining movie in the past couple years. The people who didn’t get it are brain dead or did too many drugs or maybe just slept through the film. Plain and simple it failed because the previous regime at Disney had no idea how to market it. The fans are doing a better job than Disney getting the word out how fantastic John Carter is and it’s been selling loads of DVDs. Bombs don’t do that.
“Selling loads of DVDs” is a sign of quality now?
I saw in in IMAX 3D. It wasn’t THAT bad. Despite being a bit lackluster, old fashioned fun was there as well.
I saw it, on DVD. Three times now. And I loved it. So did my younger brother. And so did my girlfriend, and her 8-year-old daughter. It was a very entertaining, fun, movie. Not “Citizen Kane”, or “Prometheus” with its oh-so self-conscious attempt to be “deep”. And it had a fairly good love story, too. So bug off.
..Have you read the books????
dude. take it easy. but john carter is an awful movie:
acting, storytelling, art direction… No way you can defend this movie. And I am a big fan of Nemo and Wall-e.
Spot on, Chris. I decided to watch it because occasionally movies that get savaged by the press are not that bad. But John Carter was that bad. By the half hour mark, I was bored and began fast forwarding the DVD. Then I gave up on it completely. The acting was uneven, the story wasn’t solidly structured and the art direction was uninspired and unoriginal. Those who liked it can call those of us who didn’t names until they turn blue, it doesn’t matter. If the film was as good as they say it was, it would’ve done much better.
I totally agree. I didn’t watch John Carter in theaters because of the dumb\lame previews. Then I rented it and LOVED it. It was unique and you found yourself loving the characters. A very well done and amazing film. To bad they didn’t work on that preview…
Agreed. Actually, it was a far better movie than any of the “Star Wars”, or “Indiana Jones”, installments, I thought.
Keep riding that sequel train, Pixar. No one needs originality anymore.
I’m pretty surprised they are making a habit out of going back to the well. They almost split with Disney because Disney wanted to do Toy Story 3 no matter what and they wanted to wait for a good story. They found one for that, but there’s no need for Cars 2, Monster’s Inc 2 and Finding Nemo 2. All their originals are megahits so the sudden release on sequels is bizarre.
I do give props to Disney for getting Stanton back in line after the John Carter debacle. Another crack it live action is the carrot on the stick.
The movies are just a means to push the parks, merchandise, TV shows, records, Disney Store products, I’d call the Disney / Pixar / Marvel movies infomercials the real profit is in the products, that’s why you have Cars 2 to sell products, and build the Carsland attraction at Disneyland. Movies drive sales of everything Disney, it’s always been that way, since Walt himself started pushing Disneyland on ABC with a show called Disneyland on Sunday nights. They’ll be many more sequels as long as they are profitable, as long as they drive product sales.
Didn’t Pixar just do BRAVE?
Are you just being mean to practice up for when TDKR comes out?
Brave is not original.
Did you ever see Brian De Palma’s movie BLOW OUT? It was not “original” but, still, it wasn’t a sequel to, say, THE FURY so it was an original. It’s an image business but words still have meanings.
wow rude
They have four originals in the pipe. And oh yea, Brave.
Keep riding that knee-jerk train.
Yea, just completely ignore Brave, The Good Dinosaur, Pete Doctor’s new original movie, and Lee Unrich’s new original movie. Cars 2 and Toy 2 and 3 out of the 13 films they’ve done – yep, totally riding the sequel train.
Is it a good or bad thing they don’t rush out sequels when the iron’s still hot?
And ‘Monsters University’ and now ‘Finding Nemo 2′ to come. It’s very clear that Disney brass is mandating these follow-ups.
This is actually quite a disappointment. I had hoped that the success of “Brave” would encourage Pixar to get off the sequel train.
“Toy Story 3? and “Cars 2? weren’t worthwhile extensions of those stories. They’re stooping down to the Bruckheimer level: needlessly adding gratuitous violence and hyperactive fluff instead of fleshing out meaningful plot or doing character development.
We’re big fans of the original Pixar movies and love “Cars” for its heart and message, but “Cars 2″ was little better than a Michael Bay production. And “Toy Story 3″ was far too dark and oppressive for much of its target audience, only squeaking by in the end by ham-handedly inserting 15 minutes of cloying schmaltz ending to try to help clear all of the bitter taste (karma) away.
It makes me sad to think that “Nemo’s” characters will getting trivialized in much the same way… It is, in fact, my fave Pixar movie.
Well I hate cars 2 but toy story 3 was my favorite Pixar movie(made me cry) so don’t talk trash about it.
How is it not original just because its a sequel??? If the story and script are not replicating something from a previous film or book then its still original.
Were it not for this sequel, Andrew might have been in the corner for a much longer timeout.
This should work out just fine for all involved.
A sequel to Finding Nemo? Why haven’t I heard of this before?
I’ve been waiting ten years to see Albert Brooks and Ellen Degeneres back on screen. This is the BEST news I have read in a long time.
It’s a shame they spent so much money on John Carter. My family really enjoyed it, and if it had been made more frugally it would have ended up as a successful B+ adventure movie. (And a more charismatic lead would have helped even more — like Josh Holloway
Pixar is breaking my heart with the sequels. they’re still an outstanding company, but why go back to Nemo other than money?
The only failure of John Carter wasn’t the film itself or any of Stanton’s work on it, it was the horrid marketing by Disney and the inside corporate politics going on behind the scenes. To market a film based on a 100-year old book by the creator of Tarzan, and NEVER MENTION IT ONCE IN ANY ADS… and to market John Carter with NO mention of Stanton or his ACADEMY AWARDS?? No, it wasn’t stupidity it was neglect on the part of those in charge of marketing at Disney, and now those people are gone while Stanton is still there! So, fans are fighting back campaigning to change the public perception of John Carter and get those sequels that Stanton originally planned green-lit! He planned a trilogy off of 3 excellent books and WE WANT IT! Go Barsoom!!!
What is sad is they are blaming the movie itself for the flop. JC was an outstanding movie and I would easily pony up to go see a sequel. The failure was Disney’s for not properly marketing the movie.
Never saw John Carter but I can definitely agree that Disney’s marketing of its films have been flat out terrible. Pixar can succeed on its own fame but Disney doesn’t have that advantage and has to rely on poor scheduling and poor promotion.
Pixar…running out of gas.
I’m sure it will be a good sequel. but Pixar really has become everything Pixar employees privately complained about in DreamWorks Animation. And while Pixar churns out sequel after sequel with the occasional Brave (lackluster) according to imdb Dreamworks Animation’s next seven pictures are complete originals.
Wow, what’s up with Pixar and sequels/prequels as of late. It’s like they saw how much money Toy Story 3 made and have now lost all their original back bones to stick to easy money material.
Also they just keep giving us sequels/prequels to movies NOBODY wants (Monster’s Inc, Finding Nemo) instead of the one we all actually want like Incredibles 2.
Brad Bird said he didn’t want to do an Incredibles 2 until he could think of a strong story. Scoff if you want, but remember, doing a sequel without a strong story was how cars 2 happened– I’m willing to wait.
John Carter was an amazing film through and through. I want a sequel! So we have to sit through “Finding Dory” in order to people to give Stanton another shot in the director’s chair? Why not John Carter 2? Obviously Disney knows they screwed the pooch in marketing John Carter. They canned two big studio execs and gave Stanton a new film. HAha! What does that tell you? Hopefully when DVD/Blu-Ray/On-Demand and other revenues are added up, John Carter will be recognized as the terrific film it is – because apparently only US box office numbers determine the QUALITY of a film, according to the popular press and the idiot sheep who follow them. Think for yourselves people! John Carter still lives!
I feel for you, I really do– Community is my favorite show and I’m sick of people saying it sucks because of low ratings. But I’m telling you now to take a calm, deep breath. You’re not going to change the world through an internet comment and saying things like “idiot sheep” just make you seem unhinged. Breathe. Sometimes movies flop. It will be okay.
Thanks for your condescending remarks – really helps. I wouldn’t belittle you if you were passionate about a show/movie you liked. But I would agree with you if you called people who dismissed what you loved, because they believed what others told them about it sight unseen, idiot sheep. How is that unhinged? That’s an astute observation of some human behavior – not thinking for themselves. I’m really not referring to anyone who didn’t like the film on their own terms. That’s opinion, can’t fight that. Just herd mentality is what I’m talking about. If you think that doesn’t exist, well I feel for you, I really do. I’m not looking to change the world here buddy, just a few open minds. If I closed any minds with my improper use of the term “idiot sheep” then I apologize to the entire internet community and sheep everywhere.
Sequel Train? They are still doing originals as well as sequels. Brave was not a sequel. However, when you have properties like these, why wouldn’t you do a sequel? Cars 2 may have not been that good, but the Toy Story Sequels have been very good. Time will tell about the Monsters Inc sequel/prequel. But, this and The Incredibles are the ones I really wanted to see a sequel too. As big as Superhero films are right now, I’m actually quite shocked there HASN’T been an Incredibles sequel.
Now they just need to get Brad Birdd back for an Incredibles sequel.
Pixar is making more sequels now than Disney was going to do when they created Circle 7, or whatever that fake division was called. Finding Nemo is their best film, so I’d be excited to see those characters again. But their movies have really gone downhill from a quality perspective since John Lasseter started running Disney and the theme parks. I don’t think it’s necessarily because of his limited bandwidth, but also because the volume of films they’re making has multiplied and the core “brain trust” people have been scattered with outside projects (John Carter, Brad Bird – Mission Impossible, etc). They’re not going to listen to some dude posting on a comment board, but they either need to get their core group to focus more on Pixar’s own movies or bring in strong outside talent (directors, producers, writers) who can drive the creative with a fresh perspective. Whoever is left inside the studio right now is either not as qualified/creative as the main guys, not feeling empowered to make big decisions on their own, or is simply in need of some fresh bursts of energy. Look honestly at the quality of their last 4 or 5 films (Toy Story 3 included) — they are just not as strong as the movies that came before them. The films have gotten a free pass from critics who are inclined to like them (because it’s Pixar) and audiences (because it’s Pixar) but the films are not nearly as good as The Incredibles, Nemo, Toy Story 1, Toy Story 2, etc. Even people working at the “greatest company in the world” can get burned out.
You’re absolutely right about everything except your assessment of which films have been lacking. If you look at critical and artistic acclaim, only Brave and Cars 2 have been lacking — everything else had substantial input from the “brain trust.”
Many critics and fans alike have considered Wall-E, Up and Toy Story 3 to be as good as the films you listed, the first two of which were much more of a commercial risk than anything they’d done considering their subject matter.
Look at Wall-E, Up, and Toy Story 3 very closely. Their second acts are completely boring and predictable. Toy Story 3 is the only one that recovers with an emotional ending. Wall-E has a terrific act one, but the rest of the movie is bad. Audiences and critics were blinded by the Pixar luster. These movies are really not good — same with Ratatouille.
I am not really pro-a sequel to finding nemo (after cars 2 I just don’t have much faith) but a PREQUEL for the love story behind Nemo’s parents would be really interesting to see. I feel like it would be the perfect awkward romantic comedy told through fish because Marlin had to have been the most awkward guy growing up.
It totally worked for filmmakers like Kevin Smith…
If Pixar’s next sequels are as good as Toy Story 2 and 3, I won’t mInd
John Carter was a marketing error, not a directoral one. This film is so underated and has such real potential for more adventures. I would sooner see more films about Edgar Rice Burroughs hero than see the likes of Avatar which I found a complete bore.
The cast were amazing and for that reason alone I definitly want a sequel, not a reboot.
Please Disney listen to the growing fan base for John Carter 2 we want to go back to Barsoom!
John Carter was an exceptional film! So extremely happy at the possibility of a John Carter Sequel. I certainly would support it!
I generally trust that if Pixar does a movie, it will be a good one, although I did skip Cars 2 because the word was that it was not nearly as creative as the Toy Story franchise.
About John Carter though, that movie is my favorite of the year. I can’t help that some people didn’t like it (or let negative buzz influence their viewing of it) but Stanton should not only be given a mulligan for John Carter, but he should be given the green light for the full trilogy. Why? Because the STUDIO let him down. The Disney Corporation sabotaged that film. There was far too much Studio politics going on. Rich Ross replaced Dick Cook by portraying himself as a spendthrift and then he greenlighted Johnny Depp’s bastardization of the Lone Ranger which had a soaring budget that Ross got nervous about and then stopped for awhile, and when the Lone Ranger’s budget became known, so was John Carter of Mars which was approved by Dick Cook. So from that moment on, the Studio started to run from John Carter of Mars and then got Andrew Stanton to agree to the title of “John Carter” out of fear that “Mars” in the title was box office poison and after that, how many people ever saw any marketing for the film? Disney just sat back and let “John Carter” find its audience on its own while waiting for “The Avengers” and “Brave” to come out. And find its audience, it did to some degree on its own. Fan trailers got far more attention than the sorry and sparse trailers Disney put out and the fan base grew and grew. There is a Facebook group with well over 10,000 members and growing. That same group had representatives on their own dime at the San Diego Comic Con getting well over 1000 signatures in person to get the movie its full trilogy, and those 1000 signatures are on top of an online petition with nearly 4000 other signatures SO FAR.
I’m all for a GOOD Nemo sequel, and I have full faith in Andrew Stanton to bring one in because he did such a great job on the original Finding Nemo, Wall-E, and on John Carter.
Spot on Bryan
Please NO SEQUEL. I beg of you!!!!!
IMHO, Finding Nemo was one of the best movies ever made. It’s beautiful, funny, smart, heartbreaking, and has an ending that makes you laugh and cry… Can’t we just let it be?
Pixar is way overrated. The only reason Pixar gets any attention at all these days is because half-baked film “critics” get hard-ons at any kiddie movie that sucks up to the childhood of the baby boomers, which is what most of the Pixar films do.
While my family enjoyed Finding Nemo, and the kids watch it frequently, we would much rather see the rest of the John Carter series done. We loved it and saw the movie in the theater twice and I preordered the DVD, and we haven’t bought a full price DVD in years, especially since getting Netflix.
Maybe by the time he’s done with Nemo 2, someone somewhere will have realized that John Cater 2 & 3 should be done.
