Malone controls shares convertible into more than 40% of the satellite radio company stock — but he’s talking like Sirius XM will soon be his based on news coverage of his comments to reporters at Sun Valley. The Liberty Media Chairman said that he’d “prefer not to lose” Mel Karmazin, but the Sirius XM CEO “said he won’t work for me so what am I supposed to do?” Malone didn’t mind taking a few jabs at Karmazin, though. He says that the former Viacom No. 2 exec — who had a famous falling out with Chairman Sumner Redstone — “needs to go back in history, transport himself back in time, mend his fences with Sumner and go be a new person. Relax, enjoy his success, bask in the glory, and enjoy his job. He does a great job. We love him.” Malone scoffed, though, at Karmazin’s claim that he’s underpaid. “It’s a joke. He’s clearly doing it tongue-and-cheek. He has an enormous equity incentive.” Malone is asking the FCC to give Liberty de facto control over Sirius XM’s broadcast licenses. So it’s interesting that he says he had dinner last night with FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, although the Liberty chief declined to say what they discussed. If Liberty persuades regulators to recognize Liberty’s de facto control, then “there is no barrier to us having actual hard control.” What then? “There’s no question that eventually Sirius will be an independent company. The question is in what time frame and under what circumstances.” Sirius XM shares are up 1.7% on a generally flat day for the market.

All I care about is how this affects Howard. This could be a good thing, mabey this man is actually smart, and realizes how importent Howard is to Sirius and pay him what he is owed. People who work for Sirius should NEVER forget, they all have jobs because of HOWARD STERN….Baba Booey.
Who cares about Howard anymore? He works three days a week, and now spends half the show talking about jugglers or kids singing, or whatever crap airs on America’s Got Talent, when he bothers to even show up. Cut his pay in half and spend that money to develop new talent.
“Who cares about Howard anymore?”
Ten Million listeners on Sirius and Ten Million viewers on AGT.
Anything else?
Yes everyone who tunes into AGT is for Howard and not for kids doing judo or whatever else passes for talent. The ratings are down for that show this year, showing the lack of wow factor he brought to the show after the first episode or two of this season.
So half the people with Sirius/XM listen to Howard? Hardly. He has a fraction of the fan base he had when he was on free radio.
I used to love Howard, but it’s gotten old, he doesn’t even care to show up for more then a handful of shows during the summer. Maybe I’ll tune in after Labor Day, but if he left tomorrow I doubt other then some nerds who still think questioning actresses about if they do anal or black guys is cutting edge would really care. Howard’s good days were done over a decade ago, that guy is not coming back.
Sounds like you have a personal problem thekidslepthere and Sirius had confirmed that Howard Stern has that many listeners. The only thing that brings in more listeners than Stern on Sirius are sporting events.
And AGT is a better show now that it was the last few seasons thanks to Stern and with out the show, NBC would not have won the week several times this season.
What ever personal problem you have with the guy, keep it to yourself.
Where did sirius admit Stern had 10 million listeners? I’ll apologize for everything I said if I can see a link to a credible news source saying that (no ask.com type links). Arbitron said he had 1.25 million listeners A WEEK a couple years ago, i.e. a couple hundred thousand at a time. Even Howard’s biggest boast I ever read was 3 million a week. Until someone proves me wrong I stand by my opinion that his show is all but done except for the die hard fans.
Sirius XM subscriptions will drop 50% the day Howard signs off for good. Mel K. would be smart to get out now, before the collapse.
Sirius is as relevant as AOL.
Over 21 million people are actively subscribed to Sirius, and their published quarterly reports continue to show substantial increases in subscription rates and low “churn rate” (which indicates people who subscribe then cancel). It’s amazingly foolish to compare Sirius to AOL.
It was proven that Stern is that popular on Sirius and brings in those listeners and while AGT is down, it was quickly pointed out by many that it’s not on a regular night and that unlike last season, the voice does not provide a lead in to it. Yet despite that, AGT is still the top show of the summer so far. To say that Stern is not a reason for that is not true at all.
Eh, I’m for it as long as he allows those of us with internet/mobile app subscriptions to drop our car subscriptions, instead of double pumping us the way it’s currently setup. For whatever reason, I can never get reliable service downtown in my car, so unless I’m on the freeway and have a clear signal I’m using the app and piping it through my stereo with bluetooth. The fact that I have to pay for the half of the service that doesn’t work just for the privilege of paying for the other half that does is just ridiculous.
Im still a Howard fan. I know he takes off a lot of time but when he’s not live my drive is painful. If he leaves Sirius, it will force me to update the playlists on my iPhone so that I would hear them whenever I’m in route. In short, without Howard, I’m canceling my 5 subscriptions.
Now for a non-Howard comment: Will Malone screw up Sirius XM as badly as he screwed up DirecTV, before they kicked him out???
I will cancel my Sirius subscription if Howard leaves. Not a chance I would keep it.
