EXCLUSIVE: Jon M. Chu is in talks to helm Masters Of The Universe, a live-action film based on the signature Mattel toy line that is in high gear at Sony Pictures and Escape Artists.
Talks are just getting underway with Chu, who is in the middle of a 3D conversion on G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and is preparing to shoot a couple of new scenes for the film, which was pushed to a March 29, 2013 release by Paramount. The Masters film revolves around He-Man, a prince who transforms into a warrior and becomes the last hope for a magical world that has been ravaged by the sinister Skeletor.
The property has been around for years, as several studios tried to rectify the Cannon Films 1987 flopper that starred Dolph Lungdren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. It has been more successful as an animated property. Escape Artists sparked to a strong script turned in by the writing team of Alex Litvak and Mike Finch. Litvak scripted The Three Musketeers and Five Against A Bullet, and Finch scripted Exclusively Yours. The scribes developed the script under the title Grayskull, but it has gone back to the Mattel brand.
Escape Artists’ partners Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing. Chu is repped by WME and Principato-Young.

this can’t be true? Really? Does this mean no one else wanted to do it?
I grew up reading the comics that came with the toys. I’ve also seen all the cartoons. The world of He-Man is as big and detailed as Lord of The Rings. It’s not just a stupid Saturday morning cartoon. Seriously, there’s a lot of mythology created for this world.
If taken seriously (and not just as an action movie),then this could be the next Lord of The Rings! They dropped the ball on Thor when they should have kept him on Asgard and have him explore the mythology, drama, and get deep into the extensive world of Thor.
There’s some serious potential here if they look at it with epic scale, drama and lastly action.
I completely agree with your comment.
He-Man…Skeletor…Hordak…Snake Men… there’s your trilogy.
Treat it like Lord of the Rings and you will be on to something HUGE.
Dolph Lundren, get ready, they’ll be calling.
No they won’t.
Totally agree. There is such a universe of characters to draw from This is the type of property to develop for summer sequels and merchandising galore. Yes there’s also a highly entertaining movie to be made but lets hope studios look to Marvel as an example and really do He-Man justice.
This is a great idea. The world has been waiting for me to conquer it. He Man is a dead man. I will destroy him. I will rape and pillage his village and laugh when I hear the lamenation of his woman her name is She Ra and soon she will be my woman.
Sounds like a crossover between Highlander’s Kurgan and He Man? Let’s chew ALL the scenery.
)
Trevor Donovan is He-Man or Ken, either or
Starring Channing Tatum. “Channing…”
I love Masters! Very cool!
Haven’t you seen his shorts online? He’s probably gonna come with amazing action sequences given his choreography background. Should be interesting!
This has got to be one of the, on the face of it, dumbest moves by a studio ever. Is anyone, other than Mattel (perhaps jealous over the grosses for Transformers and the first G.I. Joe), even asking for this film?
I spent about 500 words blogging about this because studios seem mystified why some projects fail, yet someone thinks that–if they want to do the material any sort of justice–a big-budget version of MoU is what fans want.
This movie is going to have to be awfully good to not be ignored at the box office, and I am not quite sure John Chu can bring those kind of skills to the fore.
Did someone just compare He-Man and The Masters Of The Universe to the writings of J.R.R Tolkien?
I have been on the lookout for signs of the Apocalypse, and I think I just found it.
The 1987 movie characters were okay but the story was bad. They added the contemporary 80′s teenagers in some kind of dimensional time travel thing to draw the audience at the time.
But the He Man universe wouldn’t be much different to do than Thor so I have to agree it could be interesting. With a good story set in that universe it could be good. Of course I loved Thor a lot more than I thought I would but unless you’ve got someone strong for the role of He Man like Hemsworth, Masters could be a silly dud.
Since we’re deep into mining the 80′s a Thundercats movie would probably have been a better choice. It could have a very marketable Avatar vibe. Distant world, sexy cat people (if done right) and great action.
Its about time some progression is occuring with this project. I think I read the initial script for Joel Silver like 3 years ago and I loved it and then NOTHING. They can make a great series, kinda like a male and geek counter to the Twilight series, and something they can really go anywhere with it.
The Rock as He-man..:D I would love to see him sporting a blonde wig:D
There’s no way adult males (21-35)are going to step foot in a movie called “He-Man.”
It’s a good thing that the movie won’t be called “He-Man”, then.
Why is it so hard for them to call it by the original name: “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe”..?!
I don’t know, I think that title sounds quite childish. Masters of the Universe has a more mythical and mysterious feel to it.
I don’t think that I am replying to myself, so here goes….Jim Jonze is right. No adult, never mind 18-24 year olds, is going to see a tentpole with anyone called ‘He-Man’ as the lead character (unless it’s so mind-blowingly awesome that it’s awesomeness just grabs you in a headlock and forces you into the theater).
It’s not even a name, for Pete’s sake! It’s a description!
I don’t think you’re the only person on the planet called Brian, Brian.
You mark my words, the name “He-Man” probably won’t be uttered that much. He’ll just be referred to as (Prince) Adam all the through, with maybe a few mentions here and there of a mythological figure known as “He-Man”. I actually think that would be a good way of doing it.
The synopsis in the above article is basically wrong. He-Man is not a prince, at least not really. Prince Adam is the prince who “becomes” He-Man. I assume the “synopsis” is just the words of the author.
I don’t think that I implied that I am the only ‘Brian’ in the world, though I do post here often enough that I was concerned about it.
In any case the central point I and others have raised is the same: The character of He-Man, whether they call the movie that or “Greystone,” or “Masters Of The Universe” was (obviously) created for children.
The key is to get adults in the theater, which, if you call anyone ‘He-Man,” whether in the title or anywhere else, you’re done.
Is is a name, it’s He-Man’s name!
Unless Mr. Chu does something special with G. I. Joe I think He-Man would be a big risk! He should stick with the G. I. Joe formula and/or push for a movie based on the M.A.S.K. toyline!
