Hong Kong director Kirk Wong is coming out of retirement to direct martial arts actioner Six, his first feature in over 10 years. Producers have just greenlighted the picture with a November start eyed in China and Louisiana. An actor and director, Wong helmed 1998 action comedy The Big Hit starring Mark Wahlberg and exec produced by John Woo. He also directed the 1996 Jackie Chan thriller Crime Story. The Six script, by Hero‘s Li Feng, Beyond The Mat‘s Eric Martinez and Doug Brode, follows a mad scientist who fuses human and animal genes to create fierce fighters. A group of five must join together when another of their kind sets out to hunt them down and harness their powers. The project also has elements of romance and Manga. Cast will be a mix of Hollywood and Asian talent. China’s OK101 Ltd, Fantawild Film Industry Investment, Asia Entertainment Media and National Film Capital are co-producing with Hyde Park International executive producing and handling worldwide sales, excluding Greater China.

Big Hit is still my fave Wahlberg movie (really funny with fun action) so hope this movie is equally entertaining.
why cant hollywood come up with good ideas like this
They did. It was called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Kirk Wong never quite made it big as a director in HK. He made films during the late 80s, early 90s era that can best be considered low-budge action cult flicks. It was even worse when he transitioned to Hollywood because after the Big Hit, he was stuck filming direct-to-dvd stuff. No wonder he retired.
Most Hong Kong films during that era were low budget, unless you were Tsui Hark or John Woo. Wong has always been considered a significant part of the Hong Kong New Wave and most of the movies from these filmmakers are considered cult hits. He may not have been as “huge” as Hark or Woo, but he was “big” (then) and an important part of that cinema’s history.
And direct-to-dvd? He made one (made for TV) film post Big Hit and took his name off of it.
