Related: Hot Trailer: ‘Cloud Atlas’
We all know filmmakers will go to great lengths to publicize their movies. So The Advocate today pointed us to this recent video of a rare on-camera appearance by Lana Wachowski, who nearly a decade ago first announced her transition from Larry Wachowski. With Lana Wachowski’s brother Andy and director Tom Tykwer, the trio are unusually promoting their new collaborative movie Cloud Atlas releasing October 26th. The filmmakers describe their multi-narrative adaptation of the much-lauded novel by British author David Mitchell:

Good for her!
Good for Lana.
I hope the movie is as good as the trailer.
Not sure what the headline or the “good for her” comments have to do with anything. It’s three directors giving a lame and desperate spiel to pimp their movie.
I just bet those “good for her” people are probably the same kind of “liberal” folk who like to yammer about things like equality and everyone being treated fairly, etc… etc…
Yet — notice they didn’t bother to say good for him re: the other two guys up there. True equality means glancing at this and realizing, “nothing to see here. Moving on.” And focus on the work and the message not the person delivering it. Shame on y’all.
This is one of the stupidest comments on Deadline, and that really says something!
As much as I disagree with the tone of your post (besides the pointless attack on liberals, it’s just a bit mean-spirited for my liking), I think the sentiment is spot-on.
Well said. Enough with these liberals. I’m all for people mutilating their bodies if they want and will defend their right to do so–if one wants to “transition” or chop off their arm for that matter–that’s their right as long as it doesn’t hurt others and doesn’t cost us taxpayers money.
But celebrating it? Ridiculous.
Celebrate instead the quality of their work, if it deserves it.
Or you could spend time and energy attacking people who are trying to express a little kindness. Why bother? If you want to talk about the movie, go see the movie and then talk about it.
Shame on you, Jones. You’re just another “colorblind” bigot who declares “race doesn’t matter”, “I don’t care about anything but the work” while sneering & calling someone the n word or f word when you think your cowardice can get away w/ it. You think the rest of us are too stupid see behind your bs? Think again. It’s people like you who make Lana’s announcement necessary then pretend otherwise. Kudos to Lana & her loved ones.
Sorry but disagreeing with someone because they changed their sex is perfectly fine. It is not comparable to race, religion, or sexual preference at all. This is just sick and twisted and anyone who says this is okay is bizarre.
I take issue with your intellectual preference, Dave.
Am I the only one who is picking up on the hypocrisy of lashing out at someone who simply voiced an opinion? The comment wasnt mean spirited and it didnt attack Lana, it just asserted a point of view. One that apparently doesnt agree with yours and was therefore dubbed “bigoted cowardice”. I too am also perplexed by the intended effect of this release. I am all for an individual’s right to make transitions like Lana’s, I just dont see why her’s was made the focal point of a publicity effort. I mean, right on but what’s it got to do with Cloud Atlas?
Typical “conservative” response that everyone should be “shamed”
This movie is problematic. Speed Racer is a powerfully awful film. And to call Matrix 2 & 3 awful would be doing them a favor. Run Lola Run came out before The Matrix. I want nothing more than for Altas to be great, but the facts are clear. Tom made 1 good movie 15 years ago, and the siblings made 2 great movies 15 years ago. What Larry and Andy had is broken? now, and Lana and Andy have yet to fix.1982 Ridley would have trouble with Atlas let alone these three and their immense baggage.
Yes, Visible Air 01. I actually used my real name.
It pains me to see pretentious, anonymous, talk-backs that are equally oblivious as they are uneducated. Not sure if you ever did you research, but the International (2009), Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006) Heaven (2002) and The Princess and the Warrior (2000) are great films. Check out who directed them. Yes, the Wachowski’s have a tarnished record. But considering they really only directed “two” movies, The Matrix Trilogy and Speed Racer, I’d bank on them;
This is a dynamite team with a seriously courageous story ahead of them.
The gossip on Lana is moot. Anyone who uses that on ammunition is an idiot. Last I checked this was a blog on film, not your personal vendettas (no pun intended).
Wait, so now they are the Wachowski Siblings?
This is going to make rewatching the Matrix behind the scenes featurettes a truly surreal experience.
They all three seem like cool, creative people. Good luck to WB with this one.
Wonderful that she’s open about who she is and looking forward to the film!
Wow, this is great. She seems a million times happier and more vibrant than she did back in the Matrix days. It’s amazing the difference this seems to have made.
Good for her.

The movie looks awesome, and it’s great to see Lana too! So proud of all of them. CLOUD ATLAS is the absolute definition of a challenging property, but it looks like they’ve found a way to bring it to fruition. Very excited to see the movie!
Good for her. She’s still a very good director.
Sure the final Matrix film underwhelmed, but if they announced a Matrix 4 many people would be there opening weekend.
Also the trailer for Cloud Atlas was so strange and I didn’t quite know what was happening, but I was left really wanting to see it.
Now this is REALLY what will bring Middle America to watch their film in theatres.
Her personal life aside the movie is going to be an incredibly difficult sell to your standard audience.
3 directors, over half a dozen genres and a very complicated plot – it may be a spectacular once in a lifetime film but it’s going to be a near impossible battle to turn this in to a commercial success.
Well the trailer was nice.
Did anyone understand a word they said? Did anyone see the trailer and think, “Wow I’ve got to see that movie?” I doubt it.
Well, I did!
But I also like “The Fountain,” which it resembles in some ways.
What words didn’t you understand? From what I heard, it seemed to be pretty basic English.
I loved the trailer and will certainly go see the film — of course my opinion doesn’t matter to the people who are commenting so nastily I am 85
Bravo % congratulations to Lana Wachowski for her courage and bravery to live her true life! Trailer looks spectacle-ular.
Actually, I am interested less in the Wachowskis than Tom Twyker, who I would like to see do something like a James Bond film because he has a sense of the dramatic, interpreted visually, like no one’s business.
To see how talented this guy is, watch The International, or Heaven.
She kinda reminds me of Catherine O’Hara.
It’s kind of cool/apropos that Lana now looks like Lola.
I only hope she still gets the paycheck of a MALE director and not a FEMALE director, otherwise she will indeed be taking a pay cut!
That said, she is an incredible talent what ever her gender. Kudos to what looks like another amazing film from her, her brother and Tykwer!
Kudos to Andy and Tom for having the courage to sit there next to someone who has the courage to pimp a movie. I am overwhelmed by the selflessness of those two men who, despite the obvious difficulties, sat and talked while another person also sat and talked. I have never felt so proud to be an American, nay, a citizen of Earth, on this day, that two men appeared on screen with a woman and tried to convince me to see a movie.
Is he doing a voice? I think he’s doing a voice.
