BREAKING … The Abraham Lincoln movie starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Honest Abe will get an exclusive release November 9, 2012, and expand wide November 16, Disney just announced. That puts it squarely in the midst of Oscar season. The Steven Spielberg-directed Lincoln is a DreamWorks production; Fox and Participant Media are partners in the film and Fox will handle international distribution. It had previously not had a release date, but now will make for some pretty extreme counterprogramming with another anticipated pic: Summit’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 also opens wide November 16. Four years in the making, Lincoln is from a screenplay by Tony Kushner based on the bestselling book Team Of Rivals by Doris Kerns Goodwin. It revolves around the Lincoln and the powerful men of his cabinet on the road to abolition and the end of the Civil War. Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones and James Spader co-star.

The same day as Breaking Dawn – Part II.
Disney, you idiots. Don’t you know that most people who want to see Lincoln will still be seeing Breaking Dawn, dragged to it by their girlfriends and wives?
The failure of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter proves that Civil War and vampire fans are mutually exclusive groups.
Yes, but the Lincoln lovers don’t wear the pants.
Of course Lincoln has a chance for Oscars. Most Current academy members were born long before Lincoln died so they will be nostalgic.
Truly hope that the great storyteller Spielberg rises again. Daniel is a slam dunk as Lincoln.
This has Oscar written all over it. Please, do not disappoint.
Looking forward to the last ten minutes when aliens arrive and take Lincoln’s body back to his home planet and return him to life. Spielberg knows how to finish.
Or that it’s really a prequel to the great: Abraham lincoln: vampire hunter!
Very funny…comment of the day.
Is this dealing with the latter years of Abe Lincoln being a vampire hunter?
Can’t wait to see Daniel slay all those Vampires….
I really hope that daniel day lewis does not get a third oscar, no doubt he’s a great actor — superb in both my left foot and there will be blood — but come on — it’s time for someone else.
No its not. Let the best person win.
Come on, Jake! Get your head outta your ass!
I would certainly take Lincoln over Breaking Dawn, Part 2 myself.
I wonder if it’ll be as factual as Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter ?
Movies will be crazy busy!
Disney actually describes Touchstone as just the distributor of DreamWorks movies. Kind of sad.
Hope this is good. Would like to see Steven back on top. Lincoln is one of the truly great men of the last couple hundred years and an infinitely complicated character. Here’s hoping.
This will not be a problem for me. Lincoln will easily get my dollars over that teenybopper/glistening vampire nonsense.
I don’t think DDL will get a third Oscar for this role. It has only been 5 years since his last win and winning a third Oscar is extremely rare for actors. I think Academy voters will realize this and give it to someone else.
@Paul,
I don’t think the Academy should be thinking in those terms. No actor should get a nomination/ win because “it’s about time” or conversely not get one because “they’ve had their fill.”
A Daniel-Day Lewis performance is an event. He is peerless in his craft at this time in the film industry. As much as I admired Brando in his time I don’t think even he had the immersion and discipline to the level that Lewis brings.
That being said, don’t get the hype before the horse.
Yet, if he plows over the competition let’s not let quotas or caps prevail over saner judgement.
or, more appropriately, “the hype before the War Horse.”
Hell, if this movie is as good as it is expected to be both Daniel and Sally could both be looking at third Oscars.
It will be interesting come Oscar time–you’ve got DDL as LIncoln and Bill Murray (?) as FDR. President vs. President.
There is nothing i want more than Spielberg to succeed. I truly hope that his new film is nothing short of brilliant . However I am worried as we have heard very little about the film so far.
Spielberg always keeps things tight this far out from release. Part of the reason for his success IMO.
Its opening against Breaking Dawn, but I’m willing to bet it will be a limited release with a slow roll out to court the awards crowd….
I don’t think this will be the Oscar winning film everyone is hyping it to be. It seems like a film everyone will be like : “The main frontrunner for the Oscars best picture/director/screenplay/actor/cinematography/soundtrack/costume design” etc etc. Yet will fall short to some movie that takes us by surprise. I for one am rooting for Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master. PTA is one of the greatest living filmmakers of our time, yet has been bypassed by the Academy over and over and over and over and over. Anyway, no way of knowing till we see the films/oscar day.
Excited to see this film though, DDL is exceptional, and like everyone else…. I miss good Spielberg films.
Dude just a reminder.. Spielberg only directs, he rarely writes anymore, so he can only do his best if some movie has a shitty ending
Daniel is the great one of his generation, has always given perfect performances. He is the Michael Phelps of the acting sport.
