With seven Emmy nominations, Louis C.K. just broke the record for most noms for an individual in a single Emmy year — coming for both his acclaimed FX series Louie along with a stand-up special. He broke the record held previously by David Lynch for Twin Peaks. At an appearance at TCA this morning via satellite from Albany, NY he called the record “bittersweet” because he’s such a huge fan of Lynch. But at the same time, he said he felt that records are more of a sports thing and that “with creative and television and writing, it’s kind of silly a little bit. But it’s really nice to get FX a whole bunch of nominations. That’s what’s nice for
me.” C.K. is known to have the greatest deal for a performer perhaps in television history, doing writing, performing, directing, and editing on Louie as well as having a hand in picking the music. He mentioned Chris Rock as someone else with the skill set to pull off doing what he does on his half-hour. The best part of having his deal is that not every one of the stories within the structure of his series has to be 22 minutes — or, if there are two, exactly 11 minutes. “That’s one of the things that excited me from the start,” C.K. said. “John Landgraf told me he didn’t care if I did 1, 2, 3, 4 stories or half a story. Of course, some of it is just crap, and in that sense it doesn’t matter how long it is.”

C.K. also discussed how he’s got a forthcoming comedy tour on tap, which he seems to do annually. Why? “Well, it remains the best thing that I do,” he said. “It’s what people depend on me to do better than anything else. And I make the most money from it. Stand-up takes the pressure off of doing other things and keeps my blood moving. It’s also where my best ideas come from, I think.” He surprised everyone when asked what he likes to watch on TV. “Well, boxing. But also Project Runway. Really. I love fashion done in a competitive spirit. I also like American Idol and America’s Got Talent and shows like that … When I’m watching TV, I just become an American TV viewer.”

With all of the shows success it seems like this might be a winning format for other networks to follow. Can someone explain to me why broadcast networks give so many notes and they don’t seem to give any or hardly any with cable shows? What would happen if networks let show creators mold their own shows, notes free? Would it help or hurt?
The real truth is that about half the executives in town aren’t really needed. Notes justify their existence.
The truth is that the economics of the whole industry would be improved by giving 6 or 13 episode orders to the creators and getting out of their way.
The failure rate could hardly be higher than the current system, and the odds of something truly captivating being produced are a lot higher. And in the DVR era, audience es are a lot more likely to START watching a new show if they have some reason to think it’ll still be on the air in 6 weeks. The short runs of new series are in some ways a self-fulfilling prophecy.
YES. Very well said and right on point.
There really are not a lot of Louis C.K.’s in the world.
The deal works for him because he Can actually write, direct and perform on the show while having the professional discipline to stay on budget.
For simply superior talented people all that takes a village.
He has also tweeted his admiration for GIRLS and TOSH.0.
He broke a record no one cares about….good for him!
He said himself that he doesn’t really care. FX cares – a lot.
And it certainly sends a message to the networks (as the first two comments pointed out).
The show is interesting. But the standup he does on the show… like last week’s talking about (the less crude version:) expelling gas forever while the girl’s away on a date… doesn’t grab me. This is what he does better than anything else?? Not clever, not worthy of his talents.
He’s not talking about the pretend stand-up on the show. He is talking about real stand up shows. That’s what they mean when they write “upcoming comedy tour”.
So his character is pretending to be a cruder and more obvious standup than the real Louis CK? I guess that’s what makes it different from Seinfeld’s standup in the earlier episodes of that show. Then again, from what I’ve seen of CK’s standup specials, it wasn’t all that different from the character’s on the show.
That’s what I find so captivating about the stand-up on his show. He isn’t just putting out his best, knock-out material with the intention of simply making people laugh. He’s using half-polished stuff that lightens the mood without overpowering the show’s surreal darkness. Even using a small club audience does that… the laughs are smaller, and it feels more real and more relatable.
I think a typical Louie budget is 250k. That is why I freaked out in one episode when a car got destroyed.
You would think others would try this but how many people are capable of affordably doing the job of ten people exceptional, on budget?
This season of Louie has been great. It is not often haha funny but it is very uncomfortably funny and has an absolutely unique tone. He has taken being a sad sack to an all new level even at a time when he is as succesful as ever.
As for his stand up he may be the only comedian with a funny bit about airline travel in the last twenty years. Wasnt just funny but insanely funny. Look for clips of it on YouTube.
I real have high hopes for Jim Jeffries Legit. While Jeffries will not be doing everything Louie does I do think taking one of the funniest stand ups alive is a good idea. I have a hard time ranking any living stand ups in front of CK or Jeffries right now.
Wow, what a deal, the editing on the show is terrible I don’t get why he does it all himself. I think the show is brilliant but there are plenty of areas that just come off low rent and the editing is one of them.
That’s such a bizarre comment. The shows are edited by Susan E Morse, one of the best editors alive. Louie actually doesn’t ‘edit’ in that way. Her work on the ‘Miami’ ep? Genius.
Yeah, maybe I should of said I’ve only seen seasons 1 and 2 on Netflix and Susan has only edited 4 episodes from season 3. I’ll look forward to seeing the upgrade.

Lol at a midnight repeat of Tosh.0 beating a new Louie in the ratings. FX renewed this crap?!
Have you even watched the show?
