UPDATED: The announcement was made by Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly at the top of Fox’s TCA executive session. “I’m thrilled we could confirm that,” said Reilly, who called Carey up on his cell onstage. “I’m so excited to be joining Idol,” she said. As we reported Friday, Carey is believed to command a salary of more than $17 million for the next season of American Idol, which sets a new record for talent on a reality series, eclipsing the paycheck of Idol‘s Jennifer Lopez.

Reilly declined to comment on other aspects of Idol but did confirm both Steven Tyler and Lopez are leaving the show. (Earlier in the day, Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe hinted there was a 1% chance for Lopez to return.) Reilly said the decision was “mutual” with both Tyler and Lopez. “We came up on top but ratings for Idol were down and we know we’re not the only game in town anymore, so we need to keep things fresh,” Reilly said. After the Q&A session, Reilly did admit that Lopez’s departure and Carey’s appointment were related. While he didn’t feel comfortable calling Carey a replacement for Lopez, he did say that Fox brass zeroed in on getting Carey “once Jennifer Lopez declared that she was comfortable moving on.” As for original Idol judge Randy Jackson, as Carey’s co-manager he was “very instrumental in doing (her) deal” for Idol, Reilly said. Asked about Jackson’s own future on Idol, he said after the panel that he expects Jackson will be back, with a decision on the entire Idol judging pilot likely to come down within the next couple of weeks. Also coming back is Nigel Lythgoe as executive producer whose deal is being worked out.

Western civilization is saved!
Yuk – good. now I won’t have to watch
Bye Bye American Idol – been fun while you lasted.
They need to worry less about the judges and more about the format. It’s tired and feels geared toward 70 year olds.
Kevin, Kevin, Kevin…you must know that Ms Carey has a record of being late to EVERYTHING…sorry, AI producers! this is going to drive you crazy.
Do they really think they can make the ratings consistently high again by tinkering with the judging panel? It’s the contestants, stupid. You can’t steer the show towards bland, unimpressive winners and expect people to stick around. Kris Allen, Lee Dewyze and Alfred E. Neuman do not a hit show sustain.
I am a HUGE fan of Ms. Carey, and am looking forward to watching her on TV every week. However, I don’t think this is the right role for her. I wish her well of course, but this vehicle may do her career long-term harm.
Could we put this show out of its misery? The rotating judges, champions who haven’t accomplished anything under the guidance of 19…The show only exists now to keep the cash flowing into FOX’s coffers. That can’t last forever.
Jimmy Iovine ought to be on the panel….stat.
I couldn’t agree more..
BIG mistake. Her presence will make the show more about her than about the talent.
Happy days are here again. Another judge that wont have an opinion.
american idol was stale after the first season. idols fall, but at least it never came out as a hero. hero’s are most often dead ….boring ass show.
Yes, too much focus on big name judges which totally outshine the mediocre singers on the show!!
I hope they get Michael buble or David foster
Rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. The truth is that Simon and his caustic commentary were the reason people watched. He was the anti-”everyone is special,” PC hand-holder. He and Paula had a good-cop, bad-cop dynamic. People will tune in the the first weeks out of Mariah curiosity and the early rounds with all the idiots (William Hung, Pants on the Ground guy a.k.a. The Admiral, etc.), but it will slip. Truth is, the show has run its course.
So Fox thinks that viewers watch for the judges, right? They don’t, at least not since Simon left. They watch for the singers, which have been pretty mediocre for a long time now. That’s why the ratings are declining. Only good thing I can say is that Carey can carry a tune, unlike Lopez and Tyler.
“which sets a new record for talent on a reality series, eclipsing the paycheck of Idol‘s Jennifer Lopez.”
-> False : Britney Spears had the record
I think Mariah is one of the best singers ever. However, I don’t like how stuck up she comes across to the public. She takes the “Diva” term over the top. I know she says that she thanks her fans, but she always seems to take herself too seriously to the point of being out of touch. I personally like the way J.Lo gives critique that the contestants can apply immediately, not some silly fluff like Paula used to give. Let’s see if Mariah is as good at being a judge as she is with her singing.
Never underestimate Mariah. just look at what she has done and her amazing comeback in 2005.
