BREAKING: Mike DeLuca and Dana Brunetti have been tapped to produce Fifty Shades Of Grey, the Universal Pictures/Focus Features movie adaptation of the bestselling steamy trilogy. De Luca and Brunetti (who runs Kevin Spacey’s Trigger Street production company) teamed on The Social Network and Captain Phillips, the Paul Greengrass-directed film that stars Tom Hanks. The studio has just confirmed the hire, which came after a round of meetings with author E.L. James and her British agent Valerie Hoskins that involved a number of high level producers. Led by co-chairman Donna Langley, Universal won a heated bidding battle for screen rights to the trilogy, which sold in a multimillion dollar deal. Langley and De Luca go back a long way, to when Langley was a production executive at New Line and De Luca was president of production. De Luca most recently was a producer of Moneyball. They will now figure out who’ll write and direct the film, and star in what will be an R-rated adult-themed film. There has been keen interest, including an informal conversation with Angelina Jolie about directing it (the studio was impressed by her helming debut, In The Land Of Blood And Honey.)

The book has become a runaway bestseller, with sales approaching 20 million copies so far. That is a whopping amount, considering the subject is an S&M romantic relationship between a young entrepreneur and a younger woman. Here’s the release:
LOS ANGELES, CA, July 9, 2012—Universal Pictures and Focus Features today announced that veteran producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti will produce Fifty Shades of Grey. De Luca and Brunetti will produce the film based on E L James’ #1 Bestselling book alongside James. The announcement was made by Universal Pictures Co-Chairman, Donna Langley and Focus Features’ Chief Executive Officer, James Schamus.
In March, Universal Pictures and Focus Features announced the acquisition of rights to the entire Fifty Shades Trilogy with Focus Features marketing and distributing the first film in partnership with Universal. To date, Vintage Books has sold 31 million e-book and print copies of the trilogy in English-language markets worldwide. In the U.S. alone, the “Fifty Shades” trilogy has sold over 20 million copies in e-book and print making it one of the fastest selling book series ever.
“At its core, Fifty Shades of Grey is a complex love story, requiring a delicate and sophisticated hand to bring it to the big screen,” said Langley. “Mike and Dana’s credits more than exemplify what we need in creative partners and we’re glad to have them as part of our team.”
“Michael De Luca is a dream producer, whose combination of vision, taste and fearlessness is the perfect match for Fifty Shades of Grey,” said Schamus.
As an award-winning producer, De Luca has made his mark on some of the most critically-acclaimed films of the last few years including 2011’s Best Picture nominee Moneyball starring Brad Pitt as Oakland A’s former general manager, Billy Beane. Brunetti and De Luca served together as producers with Scott Rudin and Cean Chaffin on The Social Network which earned critical accolades, including an Academy Award® nomination for Best Picture. Brunetti and De Luca are collaborating with Scott Rudin on the upcoming Tom Hanks’ film Captain Phillips, the true story of a cargo ship captain held hostage by Somali pirates and rescued by Navy SEALs. Other film credits for De Luca include I Am Sam, Blow, Magnolia, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Wag the Dog, American History X and Boogie Nights. Additional film credits for Brunetti include Casino Jack, 21, Fanboys, Beyond The Sea and Safe.
“I am thrilled that Mike has joined Team Fifty,” said E L James. “He brings a passion for and in-depth understanding of the characters and story, and a wealth of experience in making quality films.”
“Dana and I are both grateful and honored to be invited to join this team,” said De Luca. “We deeply respect and admire the kinds of films Donna, James and Jeb have been responsible for and are very excited to be joining Erika in a collaboration to bring her vision of this once in a lifetime, provocative and resonant love story to the screen.”
“Fifty Shades of Grey” follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele. Subsequent novels in the series, “Fifty Shades Darker” (September 2011) and “Fifty Shades Freed” (January 2012) explore the couple’s deepening relationship.

rudin getting in on this too?
Great team! Will do a solid job.
“At its core, Fifty Shades of Grey is a complex love story….”
No, no it’s not. At its core, it’s a crappy Harlequin romance with some mildly kinky sex.
It’s all coming together. Now all they need to do is hire Bret Easton Ellis to write the script…
That’s such an Empire post
Hottest producers in town right now. Hats off, guys. Great stuff.
Yeah, I’m sure we need a movie about a retarded, spineless wanna-be getting mixed up with an overly-controlling, sadistic jerk.
I think this is called “porn”.
Whoever you are! “”REALLY”" Apparently, you don’t have a freakin’ clue about the books, your life must suck to downplay 50 Shades! Are you so sad that you have to say that crap! Go away, no one cares what you say!!
Christian and Ana are the next thrill ride on the big screen!!
and you must have a boring unfullfilled life if you think this Book is literature and in any way something good to read. Take that beed out of your a$$ and start thinking with your bRain. Some of us do not like this degrading P0rn .
I love when someone says a negative comment which is clearly an opinion and it’s responded by the likes of “your life must suck to hate on this project.”
Relax. Go watch the movie and enjoy. It’s not for everyone.
Are you serious? I sincerely hope you’re not a network/studio buyer because these books are so incredibly awful that I wanted to 50 shades of slit my throat. TERRIBLE writing, no story whatsoever: Mommy Porn. Author/agent made a deal with the devil for this deal, no other reason these books should have made it on the NYT list.
The book is absolute crap! Poorly written beyond words. The characters are supposed to be American??? Yes, Americans say cheeky, bloody, let’s ‘have’ a shower and order us more ‘drink’ all the time. Get a clue. It is racy subject matter based on someone who read the Twilight novels one too many times.
So true! even if this film really shows the day (which is already tragic) I think it will success only in U.S., where there are still a reactionnary kind of people who thinks that it’s quite normal that an asshole can dominate and enslave a stupid woman physically and emotionally , and that sex is not an exchange, it is one that dominates the other. Without saying that this is the most poorly written book I have ever read. I think Christian is a kind of Scientologist sadomasochist.
WOW… REALLY PORN?????? it is so obvious that you have never seen any porn in your life, because if this book is porn to you, then i would hate to think of what you call a normal vanilla sex relationship…. someone is sadly lacking in their life dont you think???? Anywayyyyy…. i cant wait to see what hollywood can do to this book to turn it into a movie..i really hope they cast Henry Cavill as Christian. And i hope they do the book justice, because there are just too many fans who want to see that it goes well.CANT WAIT!!!!
I sure hope Mike and Dana pick Henry Cavill to play Christian Grey. This is an awesome love story, the sex is icing on the cake. Thank you E L James.
Can’t wait to see the film the books were incredible
Calling it right now. $150 million opening weekend. It took Harry Potter and Twilight over 3 years to reach 30 million copies worldwide. These are crazy azz numbers
$150m for a hard-R rated movie in its first week-end? Most people are reading this tripe on their e-readers because they don’t want to be seen reading porn. I can imagine the lines of middle aged women camping out overnight to be the first to watch what is basically a BDSM version of 9 1/2 weeks.
Funniest post on here. This movie is going to bomb BIG TIME.
Put down the crack pipe. $150M! This book deserves nothing more than to be a late night TV movie.
I hope they cast some Un-Knowns a scrappy young wildly unruly haired girl As Anna & Christian Needs to be an unknown up & comer…tall slim & chiseled
I 100% agree with you!! I just said the same thing yesterday.
I hope they can get Jo Anne Worley to play Anastasia Steele. For Christian Grey, I’m thinking either Rick Steves, or Billy Zane.
It’s too bad Paul Lynde is no longer with us. He’d be great opposite Jo Anne Worley.
I think Billy Zane is a bit OLD to play a 29 year old man…
Billy could pull it off. He’s a great actor. But my vote is on Rick Steves. That guys has got the chops, let me tell you.
I’m so excited of the news! I’m very interested in the cast…please no one from twilight…im for Chase Crawford as Christian or Matt Broner…and as for Ana…the chic from Game of Thrones!
Hans Zimmer for the score! They better hire actors that can at least act. Elizebeth Olsen or Felicity Jones for Ana
I pray that they don’t fck up the Christian Grey casting, that’s all.
In complete agreeance, Jeanette.
I say Ben Barnes should play Christian!! I love the books.
Awesome producers. To the poster who said Rick Steves or billy Zane. Way too old to play christian
Who’s the best writer to adapt it?
A movie ???? Omg it just gets better, I will play as Anna in the movie FOR FREE lol
Mark. Romanek. Please direct. Please.
Christain Grey’s part should only be given to Alexander Skargard
He has the intense eyes, drop dead gorgeous, has a bruding mistique about his presence that you can’t take your eyes off. Hence that is what the character in the book is about.
Anastasia Steele’s part should only be given to Amber Heard
She has a stunning and sexy face The looks of the girl next door that would get trapped into a unique relationship
Alexander Skarsgard could do SO much better than screw up his amazing career with this weird sex farce.
Alexander Skarsgard would be perfect for Christian Grey. He is a talented actor who would bring a lot to the role. There are numerous actress who could play Anastasia Steele, I think Amber Heard or Evan Rachel Wood would be great choices.
We’ll see how it shakes out.
Congrats to Carter Swan on this one! You closed this while I was in Virginia! Hats off.
Don’t forget Kenny. Kenny did a lot on this. Chick-Fil-A today??
I have never been more excited about a movie before. I hope they do the book justice. Mr. Grey has to be perfect.
At it’s core, it is a pos fanfic written by a woman with no knowledge about the BDSM scene or even how to write.
How sad.
Felicity Jones and Ryan Gosling! Done.
They will not ruin their career for that TRash
Showgirls 2!
Ha ha ha — love how fans weigh in on casting. No legit actor will go near this. And the guy/ girl who do will never work again.
I absolutely agree. The fools who fall for this role might get a lot of fame and notoriety, but what kind of acting roles would the get AFTERWARDS? Well, besides porn roles. The would never be taken seriously again.
OMG: get a life and go away…. this is NOT FOR TWILIGHT FANS!!!!! Its for real Genuine ADULTS… I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY hope that they make this movie as a RATED 21 and over, The people who actually LOVE this book dont need negative teeny boppers showing up to the movie theater, trying to compare it to Twilight.. GET A GRIP and GET OFF this page if you dont like the books.
Rated 21 and OVER?!?!?! Sorry, Darlaine. This movie is going straight pg-13 by the time the studio has their way.
And I like how you say this book is for “real Genuine ADULTS” yet you’re all over this message board saying things like OMG and ANYWAYYYYYZ…
I can see now why this book is popular. It’s for women who’ve spent their entire lives dating and their bookshelf packed with COSMO’s.
Actually honey, i am 38 years old, and i have been happily married for the last 19 years, and wouldnt have a clue as to what Cosmos is? sorry luv.
so to clarify Amanda….are you saying that they will never work in this town again?? Is that a threat? They must be SO scared!
Speaking of Showgirls, Paul Verhoeven should direct this.
He knows how to handle this kind of trash.
