Ike Barinholtz has been added as a recurring character on Fox’s The Mindy Project, joining stars Mindy Kaling and Chris Messina in the sitcom centered at a medical practice. Barinholtz, also a story editor on the freshman series, will play the new male nurse who was hired despite an apparent lack of tact, hygiene, or formal qualifications. He is one of several who will make appearances on the series when it debuts October 2 and air Tuesdays: Stephen Tobolowsky will play a legendary OB/GYN and head of Schulman and Associates, who Kaling and Messina’s characters look up to. Amanda Setton (Gossip Girl) will play the practice’s tenacious office manager, and Richard Schiff (The West Wing) will guest star in the pilot playing a doctor.

This show will be great and the addition of Ike Barinholtz was a smart move. He is hilarious.
It’s going to be interesting to see if audiences can stand Mindy in a lead role. Personally, she’s about as abrasive as sand in the swimsuit, but you never know.
You can’t judge Mindy’s abilities as an actress from her Office character. That character was a cartoon (purposely). Mindy is adorable in person. Hopefully that will come through on screen.
So Mindy’s voice on The Office is just a “character” she’s doing?
I’m sure people will freak out at this comment, but the sad fact is no one cares about a non-white or non-black lead in an American sitcom, let alone one of the weakest links of The Office. Think people in Kansas or anywhere in the South will watch this? Think again. She would do better with this show in India or even Canada (because they close-caption in Punjabi up there).
Don’t worry. Ike’s recurring role will act as a cooling salve to any swimsuit abrasiveness. I hope he doesn’t neglect his writing duties, however…
Sadly…DOA…Sorry,,most audiences (midwest, the South) can’t relate to an Indian woman as the lead…
That is kind of racist and regionist. It’s not like the Indianness will be a big deal, it’s mostly about a doctor who seems to be mildly insane.
Anyway, won’t the southerners and midwesterners be busy watching CBS (or CMT).
Nonsense! Relatability depends on how good the script is. This young woman is funny and talented-let’s see what she does. Plenty of shows flop with supposedly relatable characters. Slumdog millionaire was a huge hit because of the story- there are musicals, movies and other hits with non-white/black leads. If George Takei was captain of the USS Excelsior in a Star Trek Spin-off, u bet I’d show up. Harold and Kumar was a comedy hit (for the budget)– Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, etc. If Brokeback Mountain can become a hit when it “relates” to about 1.5% of the U.S. Population, surely given the right premise, audiences will embrace Indian/Asian/Hispanic characters as well.
