The original Monsters Inc is one of the animated movies in the Disney collection to get the 3D rerelease treatment and still is following Finding Nemo 3D, which is due out September 14. Monsters originally was scheduled for January 18, 2013, but the Pixar pic is heading into the Holiday 2012 mix and will now bow December 19, a Wednesday. The 2001 original grossed $256M domestically, and its sequel Monsters University is set for release on June 21, 2013. Last year, the studio had success with its first rerelease venture, The Lion King, which grossed $92M in its 3D form.

Does this movie have the fanbase to warrant a 3D rerelease? It’s pretty unmemorable imo.
Yes Monsters Inc is a family favorite. It will make money.
…Monsters, Inc. unmemorable? Wha?
How old are you, Mark?
Because you clearly weren’t a kid when this came out and you clearly don’t have kids now.
Sounds like they feel 2012′s numbers are going to need a boost after Brave’s less than stellar performance.
Brave is ahead of Wall-E at a similar point….
My suspicions exactly. Now that they also re-released Brave for the Labor Day weekend, I’m thinking those suspicions are right (in fact, looking at the released numbers alone, it’s very likely). It just probably didn’t make the money they were hoping and now they want to recoup a little with a holiday grab (and let’s face it – there’s not going to be much out there for families this holiday season so it makes sense either way).
Looking forward to this. Monsters Inc. is still one of the best Pixar films and will look great in 3D.
Don’t forget – this is mostly to create hype for Monsters University, they did the same thing with Toy Story 3.
Monsters 3D, This is one idea that people need to step back from, walk away and have a damned good think about.
My son loves monsters inc. I need to buy a new copy to replace the old one and can not find one anywhere because he has watched it so much. He can not wait till this one in 3d comes out. Trisha perrigo
