This statement was just released by the National Association of Theater Owners, the exhibition trade group:
“On behalf of all the members and staff of the National Association of Theatre Owners, our hearts and prayers go out to the victims of this despicable act and their families. We are grateful for the quick and effective response by police and emergency personnel. Guest safety is, and will continue to be a priority for theater owners. NATO members are working closely with local law enforcement agencies and reviewing security procedures.”

I think an acronym other than NATO is in order here
Hey, NATO, you have minors manning the concession stands and acting as ushers. It makes me feel real safe.
Metal detectors at movie theaters? What’s sad is that I’M ALL FOR IT. One psychopath is all it takes…
Please no. It’s just going to lead to low-wage employees not giving much care and being overreactive to every gameboy and cell phone. Much like the TSA, they won’t even provide a good illusion of safety.
Plus, the shooter walked in through the exit door, so you’d have to have people at each door.
That’d be just one more reason to stay home and wait for the Blu-ray.
Unfortunately, from initial reports, this guy shot open the emergency exit and entered from there. Sadly, metal detectors wouldn’t have prevented this. However, I agree that safety measures in public places should be looked at to hopefully reduce the chances of something like this.
Are they kidding? What security? You have teenagers and middle-aged people as security! People are completely distracted. What’s sad is that you didn’t see something like this happening in a post-Columbine, post-9/11 world! NATO only cares about hiking popcorn prices!
Nikki, are all these statements you’ve been posting about last nights shooting written by the same PR firm? C’mon guys, come up with a more original line than “our hearts and prayers”
Hard to believe safety is a priority when you can’t find anyone willing to deal with loud, disruptive, phone-talking, text-sending assholes at so many cinemas.
And how was this killer able to bring so much weaponry with him?
Larger societal concerns are the Colorado gun culture (Columbine) and what it does to kids and, perhaps, scaling back the now-approaching hysteria surrounding a “tentpole” (hate that term) opening.
Nothing wrong with capitalism (actually there is), but there’s something disturbing about these monster openings that have distribution executives practically orgasmic as they talk about their grosses (the true reference to tentpoles?). Direct some of those marketing dollars to making better films. They must be out there…
Some freakoid wants to shoot up an estsblishment, it’ll take more’na rentacop and minimum wagers to prevent it…look for popcorn prices to popup even further to pay for added “security”
