The story of Count Dracula is coming to the small screen. NBC has given a 10-episode straight-to-series order to Dracula, with The Tudors‘ Jonathan Rhys Meyers set to play the iconic vampire. The series, from producers Tony Krantz and Colin Callender and writer Cole Haddon, is being produced for both NBC and U.K.’s Sky Living. It was originally bought by NBC in January with a “script-to-series” commitment, meaning that it wouldn’t go through a pilot stage but straight to series if NBC brass liked the script.

Dracula is produced by Krantz’s Flame Ventures, Callender’s Playground Entertainment, Universal TV and NBCU International Prods.’ Carnival Films & Television, the company behind phenom Downton Abbey. Based on an idea by Krantz, it is set in the 1890s and has been described as “Dangerous Liaisons meets The Tudors”, which is fitting given that Tudors star Meyers has been tapped to play the title role. The new series reunites Meyers with NBC topped Bob Greenblatt who cast the Irish actor in The Tudors while running Showtime. As a producer, Greenblatt gave Meyers his first starring role in the CBS telefilm Elvis, which was overseen by Universal TV EVP Bela Bajaria, then head of CBS’ movies and miniseries division.
In the NBC/Sky Living series, Dracula (Meyers) arrives in London, posing as an American entrepreneur who maintains that he wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. In reality, he hopes to wreak revenge on the people who ruined his life centuries earlier but falls hopelessly in love with a woman who seems to be a reincarnation of his dead wife. “It is a timeless tale with relevant, surprising twists and turns with the exquisite Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the marquee role,” Bajaria said.
Krantz and Callender are executive producing the series with Gareth Neame and Anne Mensah. Haddon and Flame’s Reece Pearson co-executive produce. Dracula employed the same deal model NBC used for another drama project about an iconic villain, Hannibal, which also had a commitment for a script against a series order and went to series. Dracula is the third straight-to-series drama order by NBC in the past few months following the pickups of Hannibal and Neil Cross’ Crossbones.
Vampires have been hot on the big and the small screen lately with the blockbuster Twilight movie franchise and hit series True Blood and The Vampire Diaries. Meyers is with CAA and Brillstein, Haddon is with ICM Partners and Anonymous.

Cole Haddon is a freaking stud.
Sounds like Vampire Diaries to me.
Cole Haddon is truly one of the most talented writers in the game today. His period thrillers are unrivaled. Can’t wait to see this series!! Also he’s a damn good guy who’s risen from the humblest beginnings.
Cole Haddon is an awesome writer, looking forward to this, Art
Is this being targeted for this season or next?
JRM freaks me out, but I guess that’s a good thing in this scenario. Also, I’m glad this is being kept a period piece.
This is an A+ project. Great auspices. Rhys Meyers is perfect for this. Amazing group of filmmakers coming together to do quality TV. About time network TV got cooking.
Great casting…Excited to see Meyers as Dracula. Sounds like an intriguinging, sexy premise – can’t wait!
Happy Birthday Cole and congratulations! What great news.
I can’t believe Tony Krantz is now taking credit for creating Dracula. Zero chance this sees the light of day as he will inevitably alienate everyone.
It was in no way Tony Kratz’ idea. It was his President of Production Reese Pearson’s idea (fact!) Tony is a scum and a thief, Reese is a good guy and a clever man. Sad that good guys have to work for such an evil individual who don’t give them credit but it’s Hollywood. Tony should have been cast as the lead, he’s the ultimate blood sucker(aka vampire).
But this is only the Dracula that’s based on his mom’s work.
I love JRM! This is super exciting. Bravo to NBC for bringing a classy show to their network. Can’t wait.
I don’t know who Cole Haddon is, but he’s apparently the greatest guy ever according to the above posters, so good luck to him.
This show will never happen. NBC couldn’t even get “smash” right let alone a complex period drama about Dracula. Good luck!
A dumb comment, that. The show has been ordered. A full ten episodes. Shows that are ordered don’t “never happen.”
Oh come on… please. Enough of this derivative crap. The 1890′s on NBC is a joke. And Dracula could not be a more over used character in spite of of the fact that he’s iconic. I don’t know Cole Haddon but it doesn’t matter. NBC will never be able to mount a show like The Tudor’s and this will prove to be an expensive miss.
Reincarnation of his dead wife? So is this a reincarnation of Coppola’s version?
The Original Dark Shadows’ Barnabas Collins was the first vampire to seek the reincarnation of his lost love. I believe that the reincarnated “love” was mostly the plot device of the original Boris Karloff Mummy movies.
Totally agree with AC’s comment. NBC is throwing anything at the wall and hopes it sticks. Greenblat is so lost. Someone give this man a map!!!
Thief police,
I have worked closely with Tony and Reece recently and they’re one of the very best one, two punch in the business.
TK is an idea guy and one of the most creative people in the industry and Reece is right there with him every step of the way.
Bottom line, in my experience with these guys there’s little ego and all heart.
P.S. — it’s “Reece” Pearson.
Vlad
JRM as a vampire?!
Oh. Please. Yes. When?!
How derivative and redundant can NBC be? This is boring and ridiculous. Above positive posters must be personal friends of the writer-producer? ANOTHER vampire show? Please bite me in the neck and put me out my prime-time drama network misery….
Creative people who completely rip off Coppola’s Dracula, so very creative…
Dracula as American entrepreneur? Shouldn’t that read Romanian-American? Or, here’s an idea, just Romanian! Meyers, for a start, is Welsh, so he’s quite capable of doing standard English or Hollywood’s version of Eastern European (I vant to drink your bluuud!). I don’t think it will work if he starts spouting lines like “My Name is Count Dracula – come on in y’all, the ball game’s just started! Who’s for a corn dog!” (whatever that is…)
sorry, can’t help it.
jonny rhys meyers is…irish…and hollywood hunks will now resent him all the more for just landing yet ANOTHER role they tried out for but he was…born to play.
Yes, NBC and marketing trolls, America really, really, really, really wants to watch a… DRACULA TV SERIES!!!! I think I’m going to sell my television for one of those new-fangled iPad thingies, and maybe the company of a good, honest hooker.
COULD CARE LESS ABOUT DRACULA BUT WILL WATCH ANYTHING WITH THE AWESOME RHYS MEYERS -HOT!!! The Tudors was amazing.
Johnathan Rhys Meyers will make an excellent Dracula. He has the range necessary to pull off a complex character and the looks to make people want to watch. I hope the writing, production, time slot, and promotion support this series, because it sounds like it could be fabulous!
I hope JRM’s learned how to act instead of just pose.
Other vamp stuff on now is teen orientated which this will not. It s on for sure 10 episodes and Meyers fits the role. This guy has been taking classic characters and spinning them into new ideas. Loved his Hyde which was his 4 book comic series. Hannibal Lecter meets sci fi.
If Jonathan is the leading character is enough for me ! can’t wait !
