DirecTV’s 20M customers lost Viacom’s 17 channels — including Nickelodeon, MTV, and Comedy Central — at about 11:50 PM ET. Now the finger-pointing is underway. Derek Chang, the satellite company’s EVP Content, Strategy and Development, says that Viacom ”sent us a letter last night that outlined our obligations to remove the channels by midnight or face legal action just as they were falsely telling viewers DirecTV was responsible. Let’s be clear, Viacom took these channels away from DirecTV viewers.” But Viacom says “DirecTV dropped the channels without giving Viacom advanced warning.” They last spoke at 11 AM on Tuesday, the company says. The big issue is price: DirecTV says that Viacom is demanding 30% more for its channels — equal to about $1B. It isn’t justified, Chang says, due to “the fact that the ratings for many of their main networks have plummeted and much of Viacom’s programming can be seen for free online.” Viacom counters that it ”proposed a fair deal that amounted to an increase of only a couple pennies per day, per subscriber, and we remained willing to negotiate that deal right up to this evening’s deadline. However, DirecTV refused to engage in meaningful conversation.”

Viewers who tune in to a Viacom network will see a mix of replacement channels, DirecTV says: For example, in the Nickelodeon slot customers will find other children’s programming choices including The Disney Channel, ABC Family, Cartoon Network, PBS Sprout, The Hub and Boomerang. In addition, customers can “see full-length Viacom episodes for free by going to www.directvpromise.com and clicking on the ‘Other Ways to Watch’ tab,” DirecTV says.
The big question now is: who can hold out the longest? Bernstein Research’s Craig Moffett says that “DirecTV would appear to have significant leverage this time around” because of the weak ratings at Nickelodeon and MTV. But the consensus is that both sides will want to settle this soon. Viacom says that its channels account for about 20% of all the viewing on DirecTV. Nomura Securities’ Michael Nathanson predicts that with no deal “this negotiation between Viacom and DirecTV will turn negative very quickly.” In the end, though, he expects Viacom to receive at least high single digit annual rate increases over the life of its deal. “We do not believe Viacom is worried about the short-term quarterly impact,” he says. Investors didn’t seem especially fearful on Tuesday: On a day when the benchmarck Standard & Poors 500 was down about 0.8%, Viacom dropped 1.6% and DirecTV was down 0.6%.

No more spongebob?
MTV is cancel for todays youth, I’m so happy Directtv has taken this garbage off my list of channels. More cable companies should do the same so Viacom goes out of business and the children of America can have a chance of turning out to be something important to the world and not just another snookie.
Anyone who actually watches mtv does not matter and has no vote.
Anyone who actually watches nikelodeon is 5 years old and has no vote.
Viacom is evil, may they burn in hell with the rest.
Thank you directtv for standing up for yourself’s and your customers who want no part of viacom’s garbage.
I am so sick of corporate greed
This is absolutely ridiculous that the customers have now been drug into this dispute, it should have been resolved before it came to this. All I know is if morning comes and my 2 yr old can’t watch sunny patch & blues clues, someone’s in trouble!
TV’s current business model is in need of reform. We all pay for crap channels we don’t watch. It’s different for everyone, but let’s go a la carte It would change the landscape forever and probably for the better.
This is really sad a high end company could not get this settled quietly if this doesnt get fixed soon comcast will come up on top and its that simple.
Had I known this crap was gonna happen..I would have stayed with Comcast..HOPEFULLY THEY RESOLVE THIS ISSUE ASAP!!..or i will be crawlin right back on all 4′s and switching back to COMCAST…WHETHER I OWE A BREAK OF CONTRACT FEE OR NOT..I WANNA SEE MY WAYANS BRO AND MARTIN..DAMN IT
Me too!!!!!!
Okay this is childish I guess timewarner and comcast technicians get ready for new customers…since viacom treats their customers like crap..viacom the damage is done stick ur channels where the sun dont shine..
When we lost G4…. It never came back =(
DirecTV had better pro-rate customer fees for not providing the viewing package customers signed up for. That said, viewers should boycott Viacom programming. If Viacom wants to make more money, then charge your advertisers more, NOT the viewing audience!
What will be interesting is when Disney and all their channels including ESPN negotiate with DIRECTV, Dish, and the cable companies, then the fireworks will start. This is only the beginning of media companies and price hikes.
I just think this is sad. I love watching old shows on TvLand and my kids watch Nick Jr. Now we both lose out on both because these two companies can’t agree on money.
Well this really sucks … Those are pretty much the channels i watch and my kids do too..well tomorrow after work I will call direct tv and tell that i don’t want their services anymore … Besides my contract is over and I’m just paying month to month …
I am saying this as a 13 year old girl. I heard this Monday night around 11:00. This is all Viacom fault. They knew what they were doing. They did not send us customers a letter or a notice few days before it happened, but they instead tell us when adults is in the bed asleep getting ready for work in the morning and when they get off from work they cooking dinner for their kids so they not paying attention to t.v. Until around 9:00 when everything in the house is finished. Now its too late to actually say something about it. They have no curiosity for the teenagers and little kids out there who watch Nick, MTV, BET, VH1, and Centric. Now the kids complaining to parents driving the parents nuts about they have nothing to watch, and not only that now Directv prices are gonna have come up so thats a higher bill that they have to deal with. Viacom has nothing else better to do but do this. I hope they fix this.
Viacom u suck dnt u money hungry monsters get enough money from us? All viacom is, is trash tv! Im glad its gone! My son watches disney anyway. Ha
It time a company stand up for their costumer I’m going to stand this one out with directv. Even if it goes on for ten yrs. if they think I’m suppose to pay more for snuky and jackass, well they got something coming. Plus it’s summer go camping, visit your local free parks . Bike , go treasure hunting at the literary for old books like the adventure of huccuberry famm
To notquiteright it doesn’t matter what you think is quality TV when I’m paying a bill for those channels. My husband myself and my children watch spongebob and every other channel they took off bottom line we pay enough that we should get he channels we pay for hey aren’t gonna cut our bill!!
Dear DirectTv and Viacom,
I DO NOT CARE WHO’S FAULT IT IS… FIX IT! With that said, i watch only some of the channels that were removed but have to pay for all of them… fine, take away the channels but i REFUSE to pay for all 20something channels that got taken away, if this doesnt get resolved within the next two or three days, it will be goodbye direct tv and hello netflix and hulu plus.
THIS IS BULL!!! GOD DARN IT!! ALL MY GRANDAUGETER WATCHES IS SPONGEBOB AND ALL THE OTHER GOOD SHOWS LIKE VICTORIIS OR WHATEVER!!
Remember SpongeBob fans, there is always DVD. There are plenty SpongeBob DVD’s out there to enjoy. I am staying with DTV. I am not a Dish fan nor do I care for Comcast. We had more problems with Comcast, the cable being out, transmission probs… DTV has been so much better for us. Viacom? I can do without them. I think Spongebob really is the only show we watch. MTV, remember when it used to stand for Music TV? Now it’s Snooki and all. YUCK! I won’t miss them at all.
All I know is that if I miss one episode of mob wives, love and Hiphop, teen wolf, single ladies, or the real world.. Then it is gonna get crazy in my household… I need my stories!!
The only question i have is, when i cancel my services bcuz of all the channels i watch wont be there anymore… am i gonna have to pay a cancellation fee bcuz im broking my contact? How is direct tv about to take care of their loyal customers thats been bringing money monthly for year going to take care of us,.. seems like another set back n jobs bcuz the company is going under…
Awww I like direct t.v I have had all the carriers in the past and direct t.v was the most fair. I hope they can resolve this issue so they can continue to give good quality service.
My bill is outrageous enough. With basic package, premium channels, and taxes, its almost $150/mo. I might go somewhere else anyway.
My sentiments exactly.
