Is it just me, or does James Franco have the same expression in every shot. I feel like he’s phoning it in here. Could this be the end of Sam Raimi’s directing career?
You got all that from a teaser trailer? Holy cow, you’re a genius!
Sorry but I agree with Me. James Franco looks boring. I watched trailer and I have zero desire to see that movie. it looks very fake. Like entire movie was shot in front of green screen. And Franco is main character. We should feel for him. And he just looks like some Taylor Lautner. He should have try to look interesting.
What is the budget? Movie does not have box-office star. franco is not. And story looks weak and boring. It will probably bomb.
Sorry, but I 150% disagree with your comments and Me. However, I understand haters will always hate, and apparently judge something that they have only seen as a teaser trailer.
A very good solid teaser trailer, which did the right job of not revealing too much but just enough.
In no shape of form did James Franco look boring or had zero desire to be there but amazing and the right cast for the job.
Also, nothing at all suggested that fantastic looking movie, looked fake but actually stunning, which pays respects to 1939 Wizard of Oz classic, from the very little we ALL did see as again, it was just a teaser trailer ONLY.
The trailer highlighted the following excitement:
1. Turning from Black/White into color.
2. Banner at the very start read “Baum Bros”, showing great respect to author of the 14 books written by Frank Baum.
3. The visuals seems to be a step further improvement from Alice and Wonderland. Which, I think at the time, Alice and Wonderland came out, it was good enough anyway, for most reasonable people and even I think won an Oscar.
4. I know you seem to have already have made up your mind about this movie, but for others, who think outside the box and are open minded, there are enough youtube videos NOW from Sami Rami and the other A-list stars, especially from the Comic-Con stating that they actually built LIVE stages (more than several), that helped enhance the green/blue screen elements.
Which, I think it shows in this EARLIER trailer and will futher show in future trailers, plus when others, who are actually interested in this movie FINALLY get to see it in March 2013.
Your jealously seems to stem that James Franco is the main character. So what? At the end of the day, he got the final pick (every movie, you could always recommend someone else for the role = deal with it) and as a box office draw already (especially with the Spider-man series/Rise of the Planet of the Apes which made serious many money because he was part of it too) this too will be a monster hit. You haven’t seen the final project to judge his performance fully.
Yes, you’re 150% correct, as the audience, we should feel for his character but since it’s a teaser, he does enough to get most open-minded people to be interested (infact, all the stars we saw do enough), what’s the problem?
Oh, what’s wrong with Taylor Lautner and one thing about James Franco, he seems to be his OWN man (that’s why he attracts haters) as in his James Franco no one else.
Again, James Franco ALWAYS looks interesting, especially the different characters (from James Dean, Pineapple Express, Milk to 127 Hours) that he plays on screen. He’s not getting a Hollywood Walk of Fame next year for nothing.
Hey, the budget has nothing to do with this (look it up, it’s not that difficult), especially when I get the impression you just want this movie to fail because you don’t like Franco anyway. If you CAN do a better job, I look forward to seeing you on screen and maybe supporting you.
The movie has many talented Oscar nominated/winners involved, may be that’s what’s wrong you; you don’t actually know what a star looks like? Even, without stars this movie looks great enough to be a mega HIT and even possible maybe, just maybe another classic but we ALL need to see the FINAL RESULT then confirm whether we liked it or not.
Yes, you are correct, you can seriously tell that the story is weak and boring from JUST ONE teaser trailer, WOW what planet? The majority with common sense will WAIT to watch the final project before deciding.
I don’t think this will bomb (as you wish) but again be a total monster HIT, that IS what disturbs you I think, BUT time will tell, who is right?
As for Me, stating Sam Rami Career is over, every actor/actress/director etc have their UPS and DOWNS but his directing career, most certainly is NOT over and this movie aleady suggest so, that his BACK stronger than ever. Again, time will tell though.
As someone pointed out below, we now live in a world, were the internet is pure hate at times, DON’T WANT TO GIVE NOTHING A CHANCE. You just want to hate for the sake of it. It’s a real shame.
But for myself, as a strong movie lover, from the little that I did see as a TEASER TRAILER, I can’t wait to see more of movie and finally watch it before I make up my mind.
It’s long response SORRY people but I had to go there…
75 years ago THE WIZARD OF OZ went into production….
and I have to say….it’s even more stellar when compared to
just the little I see here.
They need to go back and watch the TIN MAN’s quest cause this
appears to have no heart!
Doubt it. Though i wish he would go back to horror.
He just did a horror film. Do you want him to do the same thing over and over again?
My 8 year old daughter thought James looked like a prince, and she wanted to see the film now. She was less enthused about Brave. Maybe a good indication of how box office would do for the family audience.
JOHN CARTER OF OZ?
TIM BURTON OF MARS?
No, it’s called ‘Oz The Great And Powerful’, but I see what you did there.
CLAWWW!
Wow, this looks SO epic. Can’t wait for this to come out!!
If by epic, you mean epic failure, then yes, I agree with you.
The CGI looks worse than ALICE IN WONDERLAND. But hey, what do I know, that turd made $1 billion… and it was virtually unwatchable.
Really? You just can’t let a fan express their excitement, can you?
As a fan of the original story, I think it looks like a lot of fun.
Go spread your negativity somewhere else.
Was REALLY negative to this film when announced…yet, this trailer made me look forward to seeing the next one.
Regarding the visual effects, March is a long way off…so, let’s hope the finished shots are better and more seamless.
Not convinced…but interested.
“Go spread your negativity somewhere else.” Agreed! This trailer has been out for five minutes and all I’ve heard is negativity. For whatever reason, everyone just wants to hate everything and it’s very grating. Maybe it’ll be good, maybe it’ll be bad, but someone’s going to enjoy it. If someone doesn’t feel like they will, why do they feel like they have to “prove” everyone else wrong? Maybe it’s just an internet thing…
I agree with you , but guess thats the difference between people in the biz and people that actually like films..I think this looks good.
And I liked Alice and obviously there are a lot more like me.
That’s going to be a HUGE 4-quadrant hit. It’s got all the elements of the big-adventure movie that you expect from both Raimi and Roth, and the scenery looks incredible.
DEFINITELY JOHN CARTER OF OZ!!!
End of Raimi’s CAREER ?! Jeez overstate much..besides Raimi has far more solid movies in his stable than misfires, kids are going to eat this up.
Did you watch the trailer? Did you look at the special effects? They look like motion capture of badly built Muppets. I like James Franco and I like Mila Kunis but something has been not right about Raimi since at least SM3 (and there were bits of SM2 that were dubious).
I feel the same way. Franco seems like a bad choice. A few years ago I would have said good casting choice, but he looks awkward and wooden in this trailer.
Awesome looks fabulous and way too good for March they should save it for June. March is a lousy month that’s one of the reasons John Carter did so bad they should have released it in early June. Depp or Downey would have been more bankable but Franco looks good here.
Do you think they could have rewritten, cast, shot and edited John Carter in those extra three months? Because it wasn’t the season that made that film suck.
A better performance was Franco’s 20 seconds of fame in the HBO doc Marina Abamovic. Maybe, the public will someday get wise to this guy, or better yet the Hollywood veterans who keep hiring him. Possibly, he’s really another CGI special effect for this dud of a prequel and Franco no longer exists as an actor. But that’s been a fact for a number of years now.
I had no interest prior to seeing this trailer. Not a Franco fan at all, but I will see this for sure!
I love the use of black and white like the original classic. Nice touch. As for the March release, it’s a perfect film for Easter and Spring Break for kids. It will be as big as Alice in Wonderland.
The original started and ended with sepia, not black and white. Sepia looks warmer, so the decision to use black and white must have been chosen in order to capture Oz’s initial coldness and aloofness. Or something.
My goodness I thought that was Johnny Depp! Do you think Franco was channeling Depp while making this movie? LOL! The film looks too much like Alice in Wonderland.
Nothing about that reminded me of Depp in the least. In fact, I almost cheered when I realized that neither Depp nor Helena Bonham Carter were anywhere to be seen in the trailer. I’m sick of the sight of both of them, Depp in his ridiculous makeup and HBC with her tragically fugly getups. Maybe a few more Burtonesque flops will cure them of the desire to parade around looking like sickly copies of Charles Addams’ drawings.
It looks WAY better than I had imagined. The girls will totally steal the show, though. Michelle looks radiant.
Agreed. I’m seeing this for the female performances.
In no way will this suck like John Carter. Looks solid, even though Franco looks lost or disinterested. It will match Alice in Wonderland
It’s like they just tried to fit all the expensive shots into this trailer. What the hell is the film about? Who is Oz? What is the problem? What does anyone want? I’m sure the filmmakers put a lot of time and effort into those elements, and it’s sad to see them completely ignored here. Flashy visuals are not enough to get an audience interested in seeing a film.
It’s called a TEASER, Einstein, not a trailer.
Actually, this IS a trailer, and a weak one.
I’m not saying it’s going to be a great movie (I doubt it) but the answers to your questions are all there:
1) Franco is obviously Oz (or mistaken for him).
2) The problem is he wants to be a great man, and is suddenly thrust into a strange world where he can achieve that, but the catch is he has a powerful opponent (presumably the witch or some such creature with the sharp claws in the last shot).
3)Again the Franco character wants to prove himself to be a great man. But he’s probably going to have to defeat the witch and her army of bats flying monkeys to do it.
In short, it’s another messiah story. The original Wizard of Oz was a reluctant messiah story. This one is about a messiah who asks for it. And gets more than he bargained for.
Am I the only one who noticed that the flying monkeys at the end of the trailer are straight out of The Avengers?
The flying monkeys are straight out of The Wizard of Oz. You know, the movie/book on which Oz The Great and Powerful is based?
The Oz movie looks a lot better than I thought it would. I’m not sure if I’ll see it in theaters, but the trailer has at least convinced me to give it a chance instead of rejecting it out of hand.
love it.
but john depp would’ve been genius casting.
Love michelle williams and mila in anything.
just wondering, but why does hollywood keep casting men’s roles with boys…
just wondering….
” john depp would’ve been genius casting.” Genius or obvious? I like Depp, but how about he challenges himself for a change.
Its called a teaser for a reason. It’s not meant to reveal the entire story.
It’s a TRAILER.
Looks fantastic. A great and powerful Spring hit! Love it.
Wow, looks good! Makes me very excited to see it!
Love it.
Looks cool to me. Excited to see it.
I have been excited about this film for a long time, but this TRAILER is not encouraging. While the classic ’39 interpretation of Baum’s novel has charm (with effects and design that still “work”), this new prequel looks hyperactive, and badly CG’d. Of course, Robert Downey , Jr., was originally to have starred, then Johnny Depp was discussed. Frankly, I would have preferred Ewan McGregor.
