BREAKING: Peter Jackson has just confirmed he will split The Hobbit into three films, the third of which will be released sometime in summer 2014. Jackson dropped hints about this at Comic-Con, explaining he had a wealth of storytelling that came from 125 pages of appendices that JRR Tolkien included in a later publication of The Return Of The King, the final installment of The Lord Of The Rings. I wrote a piece skeptical of milking three movies out of a single book, and 125 pages of notes, and I hope that Jackson delivers the goods. I don’t believe there have been any renegotiation with talent that should be paid an extra check for another film, even if they didn’t know they were making three. Those details are still being worked out.

I think that two movies for The Hobbit its streching something that could’ve been done in one single very strong three hour movie. Now they are talking about a third one! No way!
It’s better to make a movie series from book The Silmarillion. Now that is a book with potential for three or even four movies.
this inspired producers of both Showgirls and Gigli to remake both into 3 part films. I CANNOT WAIT! Finally!
Oblivious fools. If you had any sense of appreciation for quality literature, you would know that the only way to justify a book of this stature, would be to make at least two films – and three is even better. It would simply be impossible to include all the angles, emotions, the acts and all other elements of the story, in only one film. The result would be horrible. Quite the contrary, making one simple, “outtake” of this story, into one film which is supposed to include all the elements – would be exactly what you are saying about the “2/3 movie-solution”, namely a moneygrabbing easy-way-out – a shortcut.
Typical Hollywood way of thinking. A lot of people over there simply dont appreciate good writing. Just like you managed to demolish Stieg Larsson’s masterpiece, “Menn som hater kvinner” (“The girl with the dragon tattoo”), with your Hollywood-version of it. This is a 500-600-page book, turned into a 2,5 hour movie. The story was rushed; the characters didn’t have time to develop; and as a result of this, the quality suffered greatly. It was a disgrace.
Good thing Peter Jackson and the studio had the balls to drag this into 3 movies.

Once again I see nothing but sad, miserable, angry, and greedy posters here on deadline… sooo worried about other people’s money.
The deep skepticism of the motives for turning Tolkien’s kid’s adventure story into three movies is not out of line. This might just be grubbing for more money. But, for myself, I’ll wait to see if PJ pulls it off. That’s when I’ll make my judgement.
Disgusting! Hollywood is such a sad place now! To be honest, I lost my interest in movies this summer!
Love that movies (LotR) and I’ll be happy to watch the Hobbit movies!!!
So Lord of the Rings was 3 books..?
which made 3 long, yet very good movies.
The Hobbit is one book and is now 3 movies…
Hmm…
@Simon: How do you figure THREE Christmases, when the article states SUMMER of 2014. Let’s see, 2012 (known), 2013 (also known), and then it’s Summer 2014.
Seriously, what’s wrong with you people? There are at least 5 films worth of information in all the appendices and such. There’s no “milking it” or “stretching the story out over a third film.” He’s having to pick and choose what to put in the films to begin with.
PJ is honoring the books. YOU all are the ones making it out to be a Hollywood business money grab.
WooHoo! A LoTR trilogy, and now a Hobbit trilogy. forget all you haters. The more lord of the rings based movies, the better.
I’m eager to see how 3 films works out for the Hobbit. What that means to me is that less will be cut out of the book (which is a good thing). Sure, waiting is no fun, but it’s necessary. Give them time to produce the darn movies, people. Way to go, HOBBIT production and post team!
So are they going to be like an hour and a half each? I don’t mind there being more movies, but I really like how all the lotr movies are extremely long.
The biggest problem I see with this is that we are not looking at a situation of getting two great movies and then a junky third one that didnt need to exist. Instead we will have three watered down movies. The quality of the first two will suffer greatly because of the addition of a third film.
You haven’t even seen the first movie and your already judging it! Based on what? Very bias of you!
i am really excited about these films but also a bit skeptical. i hope the preview of the dwarves singing slow and solem in bilbos living room is not an example of Peter Jackson milking scenes for times sake.
HAVE YOU READ THE BOOKS?!?! The dwarves sang twice while inside Bilbo’s house. Once while cleaning up after dinner and then again while sitting in front of the fire, before they started discussing their business!!!!
This may not be a bad thing. He is using a lot of story from other parts of tolkien’s work so there should be enough to create 3 strong films. I thought The Hobbit was to be the first film only. I’m all for another film if the material is there.
What a bunch of whimpering snobby dorks. WE HAVE MORE TOLKIEN ON THE SCREEN!Its two different mediums, Film and book, and the way the Tolkien family is with handing out rights to this stuff you should be rejoicing! Make all the money you can Hollywood off of “The Hobbit”. I hope to enjoy every second of the three films and the boobs that can complain about more story to a MOVIE need to get a life.
The hobbit:to the bank and again.!!!
Yikes. LOTR 3 was already excruciating to sit through in its length, so I can’t imagine what 7-9 hours of a fairly short book is going to be like.
Well, I’m game for 1, 2 or 3 films. After seeing the storytelling he was able to put on screen for the LOTR trilogy, I’m welcome to it. At first I agreed, one book = one film. But if Tolkein had that many notes that warrent more movies to cover the gap between The Hobbit and the LOTR, I say BRING IT!
PJ have much more info on this than everyone of you, so shut up. Im looking forward on all three movies. I was skeptical too, but when he says he has enough material to make a third Hobbit film, i trust he made the right call.
I’m glad they’re making a 3rd. One more good movie to see. Dont know why people are griping about being able to see 3 good movies instead of 2. Milking it? Probably, but that’s good news for the fans.
I don´t know the book, so everything Peter Jackson presents in his now three movies will be new to me. And if it`s as entertaining as the LOTR trilogy, than I´m fine with that decision.
Beside that, I tend to judge about films when I have seen them, not month or even years before I see them.
Maybe everyone should cool down a little bit and be a more optimistic…
Im fine with it as lon as theyre like 90 minutes each. None of this three hour nonsense. Its one book.
Since Hollywood loves to copy themselves we will probably see more of this. Imagine Avengers 2 Part 1, Avengers 2 Part 2, Avengers 2 Part 3. Avengers 3 Part 1, 2, 3. Fantastic Four Part 4. Superman Reboot Origin Part 1, 2, 3. No longer need for sequels. Just make one movie thats is in 3 parts! Awesome!!
