The six-miniseries Political Animals starring Sigourney Weaver as the former First Lady who divorces the president and becomes Secretary of State debuted with 2.6 million viewers Sunday night on USA Network. It’s a fairly soft start for Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark’s political drama, which USA is pushing out on alternate platforms (Hulu, iTunes and USANetwork.com, among others) so more can sample the story of how Weaver’s character navigates her new job, keeping her family together and taking on a DC journalist bent on taking her down. Sunday’s debut included 675,000 adults 18-49 and 834,000 adults 25-54.

TV Teaser: USA’s ‘Political Animals’

Are we going to hear how HOT and SEXY Elaine Hammond is in EVERY episode???
I don’t get why everyone programmed on Sundays at 10: Political Animals had to face Breaking Bad, Newsroom, Weeds/Episodes among others — as if this was the only time slot available.
Wanted to like it, but was surprised by how lame and amateurish the writing was. Between PA and The Newsroom, has been a miserable summer for high-minded TV fare.
Agree. Liked Sigourney, but found the show to be pretty dumb stuff–amazingly naive about the rhythms and tribal rites of American politics, and written in a remarkably plodding and on-the-nose way. For some reason the networks give Berlanti and his minions lots of at-bats, but dude’s hitting about .200 these days.
Agree too. I like the scene where, concerned for her son because the story about his suicide breaks, she goes and sleeps with her husband.
Victim of it’s own stupid scheduling. Why would they put this up against three other shows that are already darlings of it’s target demo?
It won’t matter which day or time PA airs, it’s doomed because it’s not a very strong series. I’m a SW fan, but PA is generic and gratuitous.
I had tears in my eyes – twice. Of course I am a woman past the point of preferred demo.
Maybe if it had more gay characters?
OUCH. Note to USA. Dont put shows on Sunday nights anymore
loved the PA premiere. so much better than newsroom. can’t wait to see how it unfolds. the cast is stellar. and carla and sigourney shine.
Glad to see USA putting their interns to good use.
Think the show is brilliant. Just needs a lil extra push and for people to catch on… can’t wait whats next!
I hope USA network will renew the show. It deserves a chance. It has fantastic cast and its their most critically acclaimed show. Look at AMC. It gave “Breaking Bad” a chance and it’s now one of their most rated shows ever.
Sorkin minus 30 IQ points. Too dumb.
It seems every show with James Wolk is doomed to fail. He seems to be the Taylor Kitsch of TV
Do we really need to see another gay promiscuous character suicidal and hooked on drugs? Jeez.. I know it happens but why perpetuate this stereotype? Greg Berlanti is no Aaron Sorkin.
LOVED the show. But what is the talk about renewal? Isn’t this a limited series?
And yes… Sunday scheduling was a killer. I waited to watch becuz other stuff was on. Although… does that matter anymore?
Very enjoyable Sw was wonderful. Plot was okay, will certainly watch next week
Greg Berlanti is brilliant at getting mediocre to awful stuff on the air while laughing gaily all the way to the bank. Remember “No Ordinary Family,” and “Eli Stone” to name some more recent embarrassments? Childish, amateurish, and half-baked at best. The guy is a genius at the snowjob. I blame the dumb-ass executives who keep giving him chance after chance to make them look stupid. Well done, Berlanti.
PA is no Newsroom and it’s pretty soapy but I was entertained and SW and CG were great. I was annoyed by ex POTUS character but I’ll probably watch the series…sucker for this stuff
The first 30 minutes were PAINFUL, but it got better as it went along. The attempts at “edgy” writing were embarrassing. “This next one is for my bro and his sweet-ass fiance.” Really?
The beginning was nothing but exposition, exposition, exposition. Just put us into the characters lives, we’ll get to know them. Did Breaking Bad spend the first episode hitting you over the head with the fact that Walt was a straight laced science teacher? No, you just got plopped into his life and you ended up figuring everything out as the show went along.
Cirian Hinds is a very talented actor, but they made him into waaay too much of a cartoon. I don’t blame him. The director should’ve reigned him in a bit.
The drug addicted son is so cliched. I was bored to tears with his story line. Drugs? It would’ve been much more interesting to have his struggle be that he was still closeted and started wanting to come out just as his Mother might have decided to run for Prez. Make it about family acceptance not little bottles of coke.
The best scenes were between Sigourney and Carla. The last 30 minutes redeemed the opening. Hopefully, the show will continue along those lines and not the beginning.
Wow, kind of shocked at all the hate on here. I thought it was great: really entertaining, and the time flew by. I love much of the ‘high-minded’ fare put out by the pay cable networks as well, but I enjoyed this as much as anything I’ve watched in ages. I wonder if it was a guys v. women thing. I loved the strong women on this show; maybe most of the guys didn’t get the appeal.
Its the Timeshot and people do not want to hear anymore about politics. I want Burn Notice and Covert Affairs on USA.
Dialogue had moments of brilliance…very Aaron Sorkin-esque. Looking forward to next week.
Political Animals may not be The West Wing* or Newsroom*, but compared to most television programs it is far better than average.
It is not brain surgery…but, it was fun.
USA has many better shows such as Suits, Covert Affairs, White Collar, Burn Notice, Necessary Roughness and more. Still, I am looking forward to seeing the rest of this miniseries unless it goes downhill from here.
** Sorkin
Please don’t compare PA to Breaking Bad. That would be like comparing One Tree Hill to The Sorpranos.
how about putting the last 2 episodes on line. how can you ask me to watch anymore of your shows when you leave off episode. I would like to see how the show ended but i guess I’m asking to much for USA to think about its viewers
