EXCLUSIVE: USA Network is expanding its relationship with the creators of two of its most successful series. The cable network has put in development a drama executive produced by Psych creator Steve Franks and a half-hour comedy executive produced by Royal Pains co-creator Andrew Lenchewski. Both projects hail from Universal Cable Prods where Franks and Lenchewski are under overall deals.
Franks will supervise writers Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett (Terra Nova), who will write and co-executive produce the drama about a brother and sister who take over the family’s successful investment firm after the untimely death of their parents, only to discover that the business isn’t quite what it seems. Franks will executive produce with Chris Henze and Kelly Kulchak of Tagline Television, which has a first-look development deal with UCP. Tagline, whose sister company Thruline manages Franks, also produces Psych, which is in production on its seventh season. Franks, Tagline and Matalas & Fickett are repped by ICM Partners.
Lenchewski will executive produce half-hour single-camera comedy Speak American, which centers on Lotte Hansen, a young accent-reduction teacher with unconventional methods. She forces a group of strangers from around the world to question what it means to be American in the 21st century, and in the process, they form an unlikely family. The script will be written by Benjamin Brand (IFC’s Bollywood Hero), who will serve as co-executive producer. Speak American is part of USA’s recent push in the half-hour comedy area with the goal to have an original series on the air for the fall 2013 launch of off-network acquisition Modern Family. Lenchewski co-created Royal Pains, now is in its fourth season, with John P. Rogers. Lenchewski is repped by CAA; Brand is with Gersh and Aperture Entertainment.

Ben Brand is one of the most interesting new voices out there. We developed an awesome pitch with him last year that i still cant believe we didn’t sell. Congrats, Ben. I can’t wait to check out SPEAK AMERICAN.
I’m sure Ben’s a talented guy but can you call a guy who had a movie at Sundance 8 years ago a “new voice”?
Is this the same Benjamin Brand that wrote the cannibal drama Taste (based on the two Germans that met online and ate each other)? If so, those would be interesting characters to include in this “unlikely family”.
Very jazzed about this. I’m a fan of Psyche. Best of luck to your and your team. BABZ
More of the same boring drivel that USA spoon feeds its moronic audience.
What’s the matter? USA rejected your moronic drivel pitch and now you’re all bitter about it? USA is doing great right now! Their shows are different, interesting, fun to watch, and exciting. Some of the best writing and acting on TV is on USA.
You’ve accomplished a lot in life, huh?
@ glick: I love royal pains. I also love dexter and homeland and parks & recreation. Does that make me a moron?
This year the USA Network shows have all learned how to cuss. It’s ‘bs’ here and ‘gd’ there in a lame attempt to become more ‘edgy’. But all it shows is very lazy writing.
Yeah, we know, people cuss but hearing these phrases on ‘Covert Affairs’ just cheapens the brand.
Why is there a need for “Universal Cable Productions”? Why can’t one studio – Universal TV – handle both broadcast and cable (and eventually internet)? Seems like a lot of needless management overhead to me. Did someone’s brother-in-law need a job?
Ben is amazing…proving he can succeed at whatever he wants to succeed at!
Babs, if you were such a big fan, you would know that it’s Psych, not Psyche.
Matalas & Fickett = T&T = Dynamite!
