Hollywood favorite Gore Vidal, a literary powerhouse, essayist, screenwriter and political activist, has died. Vidal passed away today at his Hollywood Hills home from complications of pneumonia, according to his family. He was 86. Vidal wrote 25 novels, including the groundbreaking The City and the Pillar, among the first novels about openly gay characters, and the Tony-nominated play The Best Man, revived on Broadway in 2012. His hundreds of satires included Myra Breckinridge and Duluth. His pieces on politics, religion, sexuality and literature drew praise as well as criticism. He won a National Book Award in 1993 for his United States Essays, 1952-1992. Woven throughout his works were anecdotes from his famous friends, including Hollywood stars Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, and Kennedy family. His screenplay credits include Suddenly Last Summer, Ben Hur, and Billy The Kidd. He also played himself in Fellini’s Roma, and a U.S. senator in Bob Roberts. He made two unsuccessful political runs, for the Senate in California and Congress in New York.

What a terrible loss. A brilliant writer, a caustic wit, a keen intellect. The last of my idols, he will never be replaced. R.I.P.
A GREAT LOSS OF A TOWERING FIGURE.
Some memorable quotes from Gore Vidal:
On Ronald Reagan: “A triumph of the embalmer’s art.”
“A narcissist is someone better looking than you are.”
“Apparently, a democracy is a place where numerous elections are held at great cost without issues and with interchangeable candidates.”
“Democracy is supposed to give you the feeling of choice, like Painkiller X and Painkiller Y. But they’re both just aspirin.”
“The four most beautiful words in our common language: I told you so.”
And who could remember his subversive contributions to the script of “Ben Hur,” or his Broadway plays “The Best Man” and “Visit to a Small Planet,” which were successfully adapted for the screen.
Rest peacefully, Gore Vidal. You are one of the role models for the playwriting I do today.
Rest in peace
A great loss, an intimiating figure of amazing intellect but never boring and always a gentleman. I have been half in love with him since reading Julian in 9th grade. They don’t make them like him anymore, all the pseudo-intellectual neo-pundits we have can’t lick his shoes. The world is a little darker without him.
Well said, Tortiequen.
His throwdown with a pouting Norman Mailer on the Dick Cavett show was hysterical. Intellectual badminton between two literary giants.
And still no mention of Vidal’s passing on Drudge. Is the fedora holding out to make some kind of statement? I know it’s not as newsworthy as “HOUSE OF FILTH: 726 CATS, 47 GOATS AND A COCKAPOO FOUND IN PA FARMHOUSE” or “YOUNG BLACKS RUN AMOK”, but come on man.
If an obit ever does show up on ‘Drudge’ it will likely be headlined: “Gattaca” Actor Dies.
Let sleeping dogs lie.
He wrote some excellent books. Julian and Myra Breckinridge were both superb, and I’ve always had a soft spot for Kalki, dated though it is. I’m sorry to see him go, but glad he had such a long and rich life. RIP.
I had interviewed Gore several times about the Film Industry and for a documentary about producer Sam Spiegel. His stories about Hollywood, Politics and Society in general were brilliant insights into human nature. A balance of genius and sarcasm in every word. An example of blinding intellect….
“Instead I spend my summers with writers like Gore Vidal and even he’s kissed more boys than I have” “Girls Lisa, boys kiss girls”
Agreed. A Big loss. Not many writers like him left. He had whit, intelligence and integrity.
Gore Vidal was fearless to the end. A true literary giant with a capitol “G”. He could have written the backside blurbs for a cereal box and it would be interesting. His Essays and forays into talk TV Debates were fascinating and thought provoking. He will not be replaced and he will be missed. R.I.P.
Thank you for being yourself, Gore, both as a creator and as a human being. RIP in the knowledge of a life well lived, an inspiration to the rest of us forever.
One of America’s greatest writers has passed. And the only way I heard about it on cable news this morning was a one sentence comment on CNN HEADLINE NEWS sandwiched between celebrity gossip of Cuba Gooding Jr. and Snoop Dogg! I think that would have given Gore a knowing chuckle and a smile.
A ferocious mind second to virtually none including Norman Mailer. I would say “God speed” but I think he would have hated it and surely would have elected to tell me so. In this way he was just like Mailer frankly.
