Lupe Ontiveros, who starred in the films Selena and As Good As It Gets, has died. Her management agency says she passed away yesterday after battling liver cancer. She was 69. The iconic Mexican-American actress appeared on both the big and small screen over a career that spanned more than four decades. She is perhaps best known for her role as convicted murderer Yolanda Saldivar in the 1997 film Selena, which starred Jennifer Lopez as the famed Tejano-style singer. She earned an Emmy nomination in 2004 for guest actress in a comedy series for her role as Juanita Solis, the mother-in-law of Eva Longoria’s character Gabrielle on Desperate Housewives. Longoria tweeted this morning about Ontiveros’ passing, saying she was deeply saddened at the news. “She was more than a colleague to me, she was my family. My heart is with your family Lupe…”. Her other credits include The Goonies, Real Women Have Curves, Charlie’s Angels, and TV’s Hill Street Blues and Reba.

She will be missed. A very funny and talented woman.
One of the best character actors in Hollywood. RIP mi amor. Hasta que nos volvamos a encontrar.
An iconic character actress indeed. She worked a LOT and from Adam sandler films to Todd solondz movies, everyone adored her on set. I never thought Id ever quote the movie “selena” but it’s where I first looked up who the actress was that delivered that none chilling line “I would never hurt Selena” and it was lupe
Memorable actress, I appreciated your great body of work RIP.
Lupe was an amazing actress, a loving mother, and a terrific friend. I’ll always remember her as “Nacha” in El Norte – the wise and daring guiding angel who offers love and compassion to strangers in a foreign land. She told me “Nacha” was favorite role, comprised of the women she grew up with in El Paso. Lupe encouraged her Latino colleagues to always keep going, never quit, to have faith in ourselves – no matter what. And then, she would laugh that great laugh of hers and say, “What else can you do?!” I had the honor of working with Lupe on “My Family, Mi Familia,” and “Selena.” Lupe O. – my name for her – She’ll be missed terribly and loved always.
agree. Nacha was my favorite role of hers as well. RIP Lupe.
Yes, she will be missed. One of the best character actresses in the biz.
Lupe was a wonderful, funny, and talented woman with a GREAT energy to her. She managed to stand out and pop in a business where the type of characters she played are always typically relegated to the background. Hers was indeed a presence that was FELT in the last 30 years of our cinema and television — and we are all (but especially Latinos in front of the camera) the better for it. This expression is overused, but it truly applies to her — SHE WAS ONE OF A KIND.
Now Hollywood will have an availability for one more Latina actress.
Just one.
I had the pleasure of working with Lupe on and off throughout the years and, like all of the greatest actresses I have worked with, she was absolutely irreverent, had a sidesplittingly filthy sense of humor and was just a downright good time. Always professional, always passionate, never dialed it in – but was a wicked businesswoman. Lupe enjoyed life and life enjoyed having her. One of the few out there always giving “actors” a good name
Te mando besos y abrazos en tu nueva aventura! Siempre estaras en nuestros corazones.
Loved her in Goonies. She will always remain a huge part of my childhood.
”Adios senorita”
No love for her wonderful performance in Chuck and Buck?
Glad you mentioned Chuck & Buck. She took that role because there was nothing ethnic specific about it!
My cousin & I had the great pleasure of bumping into her at a Starbucks a few years ago. She was very sweet, genuine and encouraged us to keep pursuing our dream of acting. Thank you for your words of wisdom, encouragement, and amazing talent. RIP Lupe.
Wonderful actress. R.I.P.
Great actress. RIP.
She will always be in our heart..
She was a solid journeywoman actress who, in supporting roles, manages to elevate a given scene and make good actors look better. And when she gets that opportunity to shine, she makes the most of it.
Rest peacefully, Lupe.
Wonderful and talented woman. She will be missed.
So sorry to hear about the death of Ms. Lupe Ontiveros. She always added a great presense to her films. She was one of the undercelebrated character actresses that we looked forward to seeing on film. She will be missed.
