If you didn’t like fireworks, there wasn’t a lot new on television on Independence Day. On CBS at 10 PM, there was the live Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular (0.8/3), which was down 27% from last year’s July 4 celebration. NBC started the party at 9 PM with the Macy’s 4th Of July Fireworks Spectacular (1.7/7), with Katy Perry and Kenny Chesney performing. That was down 19% from last year’s explosions but still pulled in 7.9 million viewers overall, according to fast national estimates. (The network broadcast an encore [1.4/5] at 10.) Fireworks Spectacular was the night’s top show in the adults 18-49 demo and among total viewers. NBC won the night in the demo and in total viewers with 5.5 million. Univision finished second with 2.73 million viewers overall.
On ABC, the network aired the second episode of ABC News: Final Witness (0.7/3) at 10 PM. The crime series was down 30% from last week’s debut. Otherwise it was all repeats last night: Fox went all out with The New Girl at 8 PM (0.6.3), 8:30 PM (0.6/3), 9 PM (0.6/2), and 9:30 PM (0.6/2). ABC had The Middle (0.5/2), Suburgatory (0.6/2) and a double shot of Modern Family at 9 PM (0.9/4) and 9:30 PM (0.9/4). CBS went with Dogs In The City (0.6/3) at 8 PM and Criminal Minds (0.7/3) at 9 PM. NBC had Betty White’s Off Their Rockers (1.0/4 ) and Up All Night (0.6/3).
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.

So most everything tanked last night and ABC needs to end Final Witness now as that show is losing more viewers by the week.
Who in their right mind would ever watch fireworks on TELEVISION???
“ooooooo, ahhhhhhhh”
K, sorry, it was suppose to be Deadline readers, not “Goodbyereaders” – my fault for using voice recognition on a RAZR.
Anyhow, go to June 29th post about Dish cutting off AMC -more than a few Dish haters there!
BOTTOM LINE: DISH IS A CRAPPY PRODUCT THAT SCREWS THE USER-’nuff said.
CBS might have had higher ratings if they carried the Boston Pops concert from the beginning instead of running a rerun of Criminal Minds & then picking at the very end of the 1812 Overture.
They considered a rerun more important.
Sometimes, you need to that thing called “Public service”, which the licenses your O&Os & affiliates have is required by federal law!
They’ve done this every year since they took the rights to the Boston Pops 4th of July concert and fireworks show from A&E. It has nothing to do with them considering a rerun more important. It has to do with the belief held by broadcast network executives that “real people” – i.e. their viewers – will not watch anything that smacks of being classical music. That’s why you only saw the end of the 1812 Overture, and why you saw all the big name popular music acts in the final hour leading up to the fireworks.
I happen to agree with you that they might have had better ratings if they’d aired the entire extravaganza, including the 1812 Overture and whatever other classical or semi-classical music the Pops were doing this year. Sadly I’m not Les Moonves and you aren’t Nina Tassler, so what we think doesn’t matter at CBS.
