Jim Zak, Rentrak Theatrical International’s VP of client services, told
me, “It’s a corporate decision.” The movie industry’s definitive box office reporting institution announced late Friday: “Please be advised, Rentrak will not be sending Worldwide Weekend Estimates this weekend.” No mention of the Colorado movie theater shooting was mentioned by the company.
UPDATE: Warner Bros Won’t Report B.O. For ‘Dark Knight Rises’ All Weekend

This doesnt make any sense. Its horrible what happened in Aurora is terrible but life does go on. Not reporting grosses doesnt help anyone.
This announcement by Rentrak is welcome and shows basic decency and respect for the situation. It just would sound wrong to be discussing the grosses this weekend. Kudos to this company.
So either A) Rentrak has a conscience or B) Friday evening’s attendance was so below expectations that theater owners and studios pressured them to make this decision.
Well done to Jim and the Executive team at Rentrak, this is not a time for Hollywood to be taking victory laps.
Batman why would care about zak’s height or Giambra’s ass kissing, they both kicked Nielsen out of the business, what have you contributed to the business?
Michael-
If you know anything about Rentrak or Ron Giambra, no one could pressure him to report or not to report, Ron and his team are neutral as they should be, I am sure he made the decision not to report long before they even had a Friday estimate. Rentrak is not repotting on any films, not just Batman, so are you saying all Studio’s pressured him? What land do you live in?
Peace
@Michael, Rentrak isn’t neutral! They work directly for the studios. All they are doing is not reporting the figures to the media. You can be sure all the studio executives have access to the data – the studios pay Rentrak to collect data from exhibitors for them. Rentrak is the studios’ middle man agent – nothing more. Rentrak or Giambra would never make a decision like this without first consulting their clients i.e. the studios.
I get Warner Brothers not wanting to trumpet its money making to the public during a time of tragedy. Good decision there.
I’m less sure I understand the merits of Rentrak doing the same. This is not a well-known name to the general public; its relationships are with the industry, not the public; and its not its own financial windfall that it’d be reporting.
If the industry is going to continue to exhibit the motion picture, I’m not sure why anyone would expect them to stop its monitoring procedures as well.
If its really unseemly to talk about it, let the press not ask and not report it.
we all agree that giambra & co run a first class operation, they would never cave to a studio or several studio’s pressuring them not to report, it is sad that you negative folks
have nothing nice to say. if i ran rentrak I would turn the old neilsen system on so none of you fools would know
how badly your films are performing this weekend
CScore
You should learn how to spell NIELSEN, Warner Bros. would be thrilled if they still used the EDI system, it gave Warner Bros. the excuse to INFLATE the weekend, they can’t pull that B.S with Rentrak. First thing Rentrak did after they purchased Nielsen EDI was shut down the Nielsen EDI system and get rid of their lazy employees. Dan & Jeff are still looking for Andy Wing
Well Said Wall Street!
Rentraks move to not report grosses is a clear message of a company having a conscience in this town regardles of how that decision was made. I have been dealing with Rentrak almost from day one. All I can say is that they are a great company being ran by a very smart and saavy head which is Giambra. The rest of his team is as equally pleasant, fair and hard working. I highly doubt that they took it upon themselves to make the decision of not reporting any grosses to the industry. For those on this message board that “DO NOT” know what you are talking about should shut up because you sound so ignorant.
To Bruce: Good luck with getting the press to not ask or report. Helloooooo!
To CScore: by the tone of your message it sounds like you would not be able to manage yourself out of a paper bag much less run a company.
To Bob Smith: you are the brightest one here! Thank you.
