In my view, there hasn’t been a quality author more underrated than Don Winslow. He hooked me with The Winter of Frankie Machine and Power of the Dog, but various turns in turnaround hell on his movies has made him a well kept secret for close to two decades. While I think that Universal miscalculated by moving the Oliver Stone-directed Savages from its fall berth to last weekend on not enough screens (the films Ted and Magic Mike provided stiff competition in the counter-programming to blockbusters niche that the studio sought for Savages), Winslow’s novel Savages has just gotten back on The New York Times bestseller list, and so has The Kings of Cool, his recently released prequel to the audacious drug tale. The film Savages, which got strong reviews, has hung in this week, and the $45 million film’s big test comes over the weekend among stiff competition. Winslow’s got two other film projects in the works: he and Shane Salerno are adapting his novel Satori as a vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio, and Winslow is writing a script with The Town author Chuck Hogan that will be shopped by CAA and The Story Factory after it’s completed. Maybe soon I’ll be able to find Winslow’s earlier titles in bookstores.

Winslow’s an incredible writer, but Savages was an awful film. I’m sad the film will be most people’s exposure to Winslow’s work and they will never read the extraordinary book.
you are a moron, Kenny. Savages is a really good film that the brain-trust at Universal bungled by moving to a crowded summer. It would be doing twice the business had it kept it’s original mid-September-Seven-The Town date.
I though the Savages was a great film too. I hope it does better business this weekend. Great energy
THE DAWN PATROL had some pretty corny writing, but the storytelling was strong. Swift, readable. The perfect “beach book”. It’s a no-brainer as a TV series provided it doesn’t remind people too much of “Terriers”.
Dawn Patrol and Gentleman’s Hour characters would work on tv perfectly. I would love to see USA, FX, or even an HBO/SHO/Starz put together a show.
“The film Savages, which got strong reviews”
Actually, it didn’t. Terrible WOM too.
Savages received terrific reviews from The New York Times, Roger Ebert (gave it an A), Associated Press (also gave it an A), Time, The Wall Street Journal, Entertainment Weekly (B+), New York Magazine, and the other major reviewers. It was a perfect fall movie and should have stayed in September instead of being sent up against Spiderman, Ted, Magic Mike and others. By moving Ted ahead of Savages at the last minute, Universal cannibalized their own film!
Winslow deserved better. Glad to see that he has two books on The New York Times bestseller list. He is an amazing writer.
Martin Scorsese had The Winter of Frankie Machine and it will make a great film someday. Also, The Power of the Dog is a classic.
Anyone who read the book and then saw the movie knows they are light years apart in quality. The book was fantastic, the movie a ham-fisted approximation of what could and should have been. Not sure who was to blame for that, especially since Don was involved in the scripting too, but somewhere along the way things got derailed. My hope is that someday soon someone else remakes this film, with better leads for the three protagonists. A great opportunity was missed here for an instant classic film.
The film was great, the acting was surprisingly awesome from the newcomers. Benicio and selma were awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed the film from start to finish.
