The only face on CBS This Morning from CBS’ previous morning program, Erica Hill, is now gone. CBS News has named its Chief White House Correspondent Norah O’Donnell co-host of CBS This Morning. O’Donnell, who was once considered a possible successor to Meredith Vieira on Today, will join co-hosts Charlie Rose and Gayle King beginning this fall. The news comes after O’Donnell recently substituted for Hill, sitting next to Rose and King on the CBS morning program. Here’s what O’Donnell said about her guest stint on the show just last week: “I told Erica Hill who is letting me fill in for her, I promised not to leave too many crumbs in her keyboard; I won’t mess up her office too much.” Ironic, huh?

O’Donnell will leave the White House, a position she has held since joining CBS News in June 2011, to assume her new role while continuing as the principal substitute anchor for Face The Nation. Hill “is in discussions regarding a new role,” CBS News said. “Norah is an accomplished reporter with all the skills for the job,” CBS News chairman Jeff Fager said. “She’s a hard worker who knows her story and, as she has shown time after time at the White House, she can think on her feet on live television.” Before joining CBS News, O’Donnell was the Chief Washington Correspondent for MSNBC and a contributing correspondent for NBC’s Today. She joined NBC News in 1999. The latest revamp of its morning show with the launch of CBS This Morning has not done much for CBS closing the ratings gap with NBC’s Today and ABC’s Good Morning America, as it continues to be far behind the ratings leaders.

I have been a CBS fan for many years. I also started following Erica Hill when she was with Cooper Anderson. If you want to have a winning show have some winners on the show. ERICA HILL plus two more. Charlie Rose is a good man but hard to luck at in the AM. Gayle King is very obnoxious and hard to listen too. I am leaving your Network. To have a loyal following you’ve got to get it right.

Totally agree with the “Gayle is so annoying” comment. But, if you were Erica Hill, would you have wanted to stay there? She was so obviously treated like a third wheel seated far down at the end of the table. And Gayle all but ignored her as she carried on her Charlie Rose love-fest. I certainly wish Erica the best and hopes she lands a gig that takes good advantage of her talents.
Perhaps Erica asked for the boot. I agree that Gayle King is not a news casting professional, and she probably wasn’t hired for that. I got a little tired of her interrupting Erica with her comments and opinions. She is a bit better now. I don’t care for Norah O’Donnell because she wears her presidential choice on her sleeve, and always finds some way to criticize the contender.
Norah is the one that has such a sour look on her face. She cannot hide the fact, she dislikes the republicans.

Gayle King is simply awful. Charlie Rose is great but I can’t watch this show because of how bad Gayle is. Stopped watching six months ago. CBS, please make a change and I will tune in again.

I couldn’t agree more Erica Hill was the only thing keeping me watching; I’m just going to watch the local CBS Pittsburgh news like my husband does in the AM; goodbye CBS, you kept changing on me too many times; I liked the Harry-Maggie-Dave combo, and CBS fubared that show; Erica was the only commentator I enjoyed hearing on the 2 newer shows.
I agree 100% with this comment. Erica will be fine. She is a good journalist vs Gail being a big mouth know it all who must like the sound of her own voice as she talks too much being rude to cohosts and guests. I enjoy the stories reported each morning but will not continue to watch the show and listen to Gail King. CHARLIE ROSE is an asset to the show and deserves an equally talented cohost.
Despite the fact that the majority of my friends watch other morning shows, I have stood by CBS, grudgingly keeping my loyalty even after the abrupt departure of my beloved team of Harry, Maggie, and Dave. I really wanted to give the new combination of Charlie Rose, Gayle King, and Erica Hill a chance, especially since I had enjoyed Erica on the Saturday show. And now you go and remove Erica for Norah O’Donnell, who I find to be arrogant and condescending? Sorry, CBS, but my loyalty only goes so far. I’m moving on, which I guess must be what you wanted all along. Just don’t change Sunday Morning or I won’t have any reason to watch CBS at all.

I agree. Erica Hill was my favorite! Always fresh and brought some life to the show. Gayle simply isn’t a news reporter. Nobody should have a job just because her friend is rich.

I fully agree, Gail King is NOT a good newscaster. I only watched because I love Erica Hill. I loved her on CNN with Anderson, who I also love. CBS really messed up, bringing such an amateur as King in and then removing a veteran journalist like Erica Hill.

Just wanted to let you know that I flipped over to NBC the other day and lo and behold-there was Erica Hill doing a special interview!!! So glad to have found her. So refreshing and spirited in the am–or any time, for that matter. Sorry CBS kept Gayle King–opinionated, incorrect grammar, and an “in-your’face” way of presentation. I like CBS format in the am, but–so long if it continues the way it is!! I hope to see more of Erica Hill in the morning from now on!(0n NBC)
I so agree. I couldn’t stand Norah O’Donnell when she filled in. She had a nasty arrogant tone with guests that really rubbed me the wrong way. Erica Hill was the bigest reason to watch.

The only reason I continue to watch this show is because they don’t have screaming fans just outside the windows. That said, I’d really like to see Gayle King find a new job. She does not belong on this type of show. Maybe they could fit her in the View lineup where talking over people and offering unsolitcited opinions is the name of the game.

Big mistake taking Erica Hill off. She and Charlie Rose made a great team and elevated the a.m. show to a piece of ‘real’ news reporting.
Now much of the time Charlie is away, and the show is just another piece of morning fluff.
I couldn’t agree more with all of these comments. Erica Hill was my fav and her and Charlie Rose made a great team! Gayle King has reeled it in some since the beginning but is still annoying. I’m sure she is a very nice person but who cares what she things about EVERYTHING??? Still, I looked forward to watching the 3 of them every morning, but especially after Gayle was only on the last hour. Gayle made Erica look 10 times more gracious, eloquent and classy sitting next to Gayle and covering for her bumbled attempts. CBS, you really messed up by taking Erica Hill off the show and leaving Gayle King! And you need to get charlie Rose back in his seat if you have any hope of recovering!
I watch these type of tv shows for information and a certain kind of no nonsense, interesting presentation. I like the format better than other programs. I became a CBS observer before Ms. Hill departed. I did not know Ms. Hill was a seasoned reporter; I thought she was a trainee. Charlie and Gail ask good questions – of interest to me. I see them both as professionals and Ms. King’s two second, brief comments adds a good flavor to the discussion format. YES!!
I agree, Erica was polished and stated the news without opinions or arrogance. This Norah O’Donnell is so biased about her political views that I am sick of her. I will no longer watch the CBS newscast. It’s too bad, there is no good morning news network to watch, just fluff.

I talk to a lot of people about cbs line up and they all say the same thing why erica hill, gail king is no great shake! for what ratings.charlie rose is ok,but he always seem to have a cold and he dosen’t sit upright.
Always interesting to read perspectives. I personally do not need to be entertained in the morning and do not need bantering or shouting. I don’t get cable news and PBS does not have any morning news so only have the 3 network choices. Overall, I prefer the CBS format as I used to watch The Today Show, but it has too much fluff. The only host I enjoy is Charlie Rose as he does not need to give opinions on every subject and he tries to target the essence of any news or subject.
Amen. Since I’ve retired, I’ve been forced to find decent, direct news reporting in the morning. It’s mostly fluff. Charlie and Eric were the best. Now it’s only 1/2 as good.
Gail King is I am sure a wonderful person, but to replaace Erica and leave Gail was crazy. Gail is so impressed with Charlie Rose that it is painful to watch. She is constantly saying his name. Erica Hill is a bonified journalist and did a great job. Her demeanor and intelligence is superior. What a slap in the face to Erica. I hope cbs has to pay her bigtime. I had switched from ABC because of Charlie and I loved Erica. I have watched The Charlie Rose Broadcast for year’s and loved it however, I must say “Charlie and Gail together is embarrassing for Charlie” I feel different about his show now and I do not like that. Sorry to say but I am back to ABC. I am slso sorry to say my opinion is Gail is the problem,she tries too hard to be someone she is not and never will be. I believe this show is going no place fast.
The ABC and NBC morning shows are frenetically paced, fluffy non-news. CBS This Morning does as advertised; it offers the news with thoughtful commentary by Charlie Rose and (formerly) Erica Hill. I am sad to see her go. She fit in well with the show’s other talented young reporters. Gayle King is another story. She has an annoying habit of commenting on what she liked about a story rather than expand on the story’s substance. Erica Hill was probably “let go”, because she highlighted that Gayle King is out of her element on a news program. Her talent for pop culture and solipsistic conversation would be better suited to daytime TV’s “The Talk”. Maybe she could host a reality show.
I agree. Was there an announcement or anything about Erica leaving? Maybe I was out of town when that happened. I have just noticed for the past few days that they are not saying she if on assignment or vacation. Charlie Rose and Gayle King will not hold my interest.
I must agree. I’ve never quite got why Gayle is one this broadcast to begin with, but to boot Erica & keep Gayle seems ill conceived. Erica Hill is a far superior news caster & I’m sure will bounce back with avengence.

I completely agree with Anyonmous on August 1st. I too will be switching to ABC again. I loved Erica Hill because she and Charlie were certainly the two with the intelligence to ask questions that had the depth that gave viewers a better understanding of the news. Sorry Gail but just don’t think you have the depth.
CBS is going to loose a lot of viewers because of this switch and it’s too bad. This show gave us the news in depth that many of us looked forward to each day.
As I was watching CBS this morning,I began thinking how boring it was and where was Erica Hill? (I had been gone for awhile and was looking forward to watching again.) I could not believe Erica had been replaced! Is the stupid person who made that decision the same

My husband and I really liked the program since its beginning. He likes hard news and I like more commentary, so this program suited the both of us. A few problems ironed out nicely but getting rid of Erica is not one of the solutions. I like Gayle’s down to earth comments and she has improved as a commentator. The variety of comments makes the show appeal to everyone. As a morning show, CBS this morning, tops the rest – at least until now.

I have so enjoyed the early morning news from intelligent reporters without apparent bias and limited fluff. I have watched this past week with astonishment as Erica was missing. And Charlie is absent this week, too. Gayle needs to be tutored in how to ask a question without the dialogue. Keep her in the Green Room with the fluff. I even get up early (in the West) to catch this CBS news as it is intelligent. Used to watch TODAY and it is only fluff now. Thought I had found the perfect news show for my early coffee. Nora? Oh, No.

Erica Hill was the best thing about CBS This Morning. Charlie Rose seems uncomfortable unless he is conducting an interview, and Gayle King is pathetic, from the ridiculous false eyelashes to the rather amateurish attitude. I gave up Today when AnnCurry was unceremoniously fired, and now I fear I have no choice but ABC.

I totally agree that CBS really got it all wrong. Replacing a true professional such as Erica brings their new format down a notch. From the beginning I did not think that Gayle would last since she is basically a clone of Oprah. I will be going back to GMA.
Charlie, Erica, and Norah, would have made a top notch team. Gayle should have been the one to get rid of. Yet when you are friends with Oprah, Gayle will have a job for as long as she wants.
So sad that Erica is out, I had left the other morning shows because of the unbalanced amount of fluff and banter between the hosts and lack of news. It had seemed they had a great balance! How can you get a following when you do not stand behind your picks. Bad move. Sometimes the best is not the most popular.
Erica certainly kept the show on track, and seemed to be the real
key person. Certainly she must not have been let go for poor performance. The things my wife and I enjoy most are the more lengthy interviews and spontaneous remarks. Charlie, Gayle and Erica made an excellent team with each having their special talent
making for a more interesting, seemingly less scripted program.
We will miss Erica greatly and will re-evaluate our early morning
program choice once the new cast is all in place. It was a very poor choice to let Erica go.
Just came back from vacation to find Erica Hill missing & now find out CBS ” dumped ” her–BAD MOVE. Erica deserves better treatment-
Start by bringing her back, have Charlie “sit up ” & put Gayle on assignment–or keep her behind the scenes, she is not a good team member.

Charlie Rose may be the best interviewer on television which is why he got this job. But……. he is a bit highbrow for market share, so CBS added Erica Hill for some balance. Gayle King? Well, that should have been a no-brainer. Oprah’s best friend. Huge public following. But……………. really not good enough to beat GMA or Today.
CBS isn’t even mentioned in discussions of the early morning network TV wars, so things must really be heated there. Not surprising they’re trying something new, though I’m sorry this has happened to Erica Hill. Hopefully she’ll land on her feet somewhere.

Ok, I gave CBS another chance when Harry Smith & Maggie Rodriguez left the show because Erica Hill was still on the program. I don’t care for Charlie Ross (boring old man with no sense of humor) & Gayle King is obnoxious as someone posted earlier. Now that Erica is leaving the show, I will be watching another morning program on another channel. Why do people mess up a good thing? Crazy!
Wrong folks! Nothing against Gayle King, but that IS the problem. She interrupts, inserts opinions and tries to assert generalship during the entire broadcast. I find it hard to believe CBS let Erica Hill go. The problem is not the journalists, they have had the best and let them go starting with Harry, Magie,Dave now Erica. The prolbem is the time alotted for the guest. Not so many guess and more time for them, since they have five (5) days a week. Maybe programing just might solve most of their problem. I would think journalists lives would mean somthing.
The final nail in the coffin from my perspective. I watch Fox News regularly and the CBS Morning Show for a contrasting perspective. Erica Hill was the only somewhat “balanced” reporter remaining on this show and after this morning’s broadcast, Ms. O’Donnell proved herself to be a liberal-biased “reporter”. Her “no-good, the bad, the ugly” comment about Clint Eastwood’s appearance on the final night of the RNC convention was uncalled for and mean-spirited. Prior to that comment, she was “egging” Mrs. Romney about commenting negatively on Clint’s performance, but Mrs. Romney short-circuited her efforts. Only after, not succeeding did Ms. O’Donnell make her “no-good” comment; as a so-called “reporter” she proved herself to be just another liberal pundit. Good bye CBS and hello GMA or Today!
CBS you REALLY screwed it up getting rid of Erica Hill. She was such a PRO…Gayle King, a total amateur and very annoying “daytime talk show host” and NOT a news anchor, should have been gone first. Erica Hill will ALWAYS be a favorite of mine. CBS loses a great talent.

Just another hopeless and uninformed grasp at straws. CBS needs to acknowledge the mistake of hiring Oprah’s BFF (some qualification by the way) and a man fascinated with his own wealth of knowledge. He has it, mind you, but I am more interested in the guests than the hosts during an interview. The audience is younger, and you guys are missing the demographic. Your researchers should be on the chopping block. Basic skills of observation are digging a deeper hole. I stayed this long, but am moving on.
I really haven’t liked the morning show since they changed it, I will say I continued to watch because of Erica Hill. She brought a freshness to the show. Unlike the ones on there now who act like their stuck on themselves. As someone else has says Gayle King just seems to much like a rookie and the new girl is way too confrontational. I will more than likely change and start watching another channel. Dang CBS you all messed up my morning show. Thanks

Erica was much more pleasant to watch than Nora. My husband can’t stand Nora. He turns the channel when she starts talking. Nora is very abrasive and her interviews seem as if she has a vendetta against the person. Nora has a sour look and it’s as if it is a chore for her to smile. Sorry CBS but you got it wrong again. I have been watching CBS this morning for several years after switching from NBC after decades. Now I’m moving to CNN, because while I enjoy Charlie Rose; I can’t take the tension Nora gives off so early in the morning. Too intense, too abrasive, and frankly, she stresses me out! No one wants to be stressed out before they even get to work! I just want the news! Nora seems talented but best utilized back in Washington or on a later time slot. I also get the impression she is after Charlie’s position as she seems to compete with him sometimes. Maybe Charlie is looking to exit and she’s the new anchor….?

Erica Hill is well liked and a true professional. Norah O’Donnell wears her feelings on her sleeve and her facial expressions seem to depict contempt for news items she obviously does not like. Not very professional or desirable!
Changes, changes,changes and they just keep getting worse!,,,please bring Harry and team BACK!!!!
We always watched CBS This Morning until Gaye King came on show. We do not like her , she is not a news caster . To let Erica Hill go is a disaster to the show.We know longer watch the show . In my opinion this change was not in the best interest of the show, from the comments it seems I’m not alone.
I have not watched CBS in the morning since they got rid of Harry Smith and the rest of the old morning show. They were like family and I refuse to watch. Let them continue to can the rest of the crew for all I care.

Whoever didn’t see that coming from Day One is blind and deaf. Maybe now CBS will go back to Salant rules, as in hiring journalists instead of wink, wink, aren’t I vaguely cute and, oh, goody, more gossip. Like, who cares! I’m almost as unattractive at Katie. CBS News needs to invest in focus groups with brains, since it doesn’t have any of its own.

Not surprising. I figured as much when I saw O’Donnell sit in for Hill. I think Hill does a great job but I like O’ Donnell as well. Hopefully Hill gets a good gig at CBS.
I guess this means they are securing their hold on the cryptkeeper demographic. My 68 year old mother thinks the show is too old for her! Erica Hill is the only life on the show — I’m sure she’ll find a venue where her fantastic personality is an asset.
why don’t they get rid of Gayle King..so tired of seeing her everywhere..where would she be if not for Oprah…it seems she’s in every place and no one likes her…why to make Oprah feel good..yikkes won’t watch show until she leaves…Norah is excellent as is Charlie..
Much as I admire Norah’s reportorial skills, this is a HUGE MISTAKE. Erica Hill is credible, personable and a great interviewer who can empathize with her interview subjects and her audience. Also, Norah is one of the few intrepid White House reporters who asks the tough questions. Is she being quietly “neutralized” by consigning her to the a.m. — like ABC did with George Stephanopuolos?
All great points, I completely agree. O’Donnell is vivacious, and can certainly hold her own on a morning show, but her savvy reporter skills (which have been more in focus since she jumped from NBC) are IMHO a greater asset and those will be blunted if she takes a role as a ‘diplomatic’ morning show host.
This show continues to spiral downhill fast. When Erica and Chris did the Saturday Morning Shows—they had energy and were alive…..once you moved them to the weekday program…you placed shackles on their hand and they became hum-drum…….then you bring on Charlie Rose who looks half asleep and can’t muster the energy to open his mouth when he speaks and Gayle who has a face for radio……I hope that Erica gets a better gig elsewhere.
i totally agree with the above comment plus the fact that gayle king adds nothing to show nor charlie rose. have been viewer for the past 6 years every morning but i am now switching to another channel.
They should get rid of awful Gayle King and overly liberal Charlie Rose while they’re at it.
They would get more viewers if they would abandon their leftwing bias, but I don’t see that happening at CBS in an Obama election year. Journalistic integrity is absent at CBS This Morning.
I love Charlie Rose but he does not belong on morning TV. He looks so old and tired. His own show is a perfect fit, so I can’t even fathom why he agreed. Well, maybe I can.
As for Gayle she sincerely makes me want to barf. I am so sick of her. The bad news is she won’t easily be fired no matter how much she offends/sucks because of her connection to Oprah. You think CBS is going to risk offending Oprah’s soulmate? Hardly. Unfortunately.
You should switch to FOX (Faux) News. I’m sure you’ll find all that you’re looking for. If not there, try the Cartoon Network.
I’m in my 40tees and used to watch Today religiously but have gravitated to CBS in the last few weeks. I like their vibe. It’s less, “kid missing, mom with 500 kids, man mauled by wild animal.”
Will miss Erica but Norah is smart, energetic, and accomplished. Hopefully, she’ll do great and bring a added dimension and more viewers.
I continue to be amazed that the network with the best “Eye” for prime time has a Blind “Eye” when it comes to news! Gale King has failed at every show she’s tried…Charlie Rose belongs on RLTV not CBS. Nora won’t change those dynamics!
Love Norah O’Donnell but “CBS This Morning” panics too much. Always has. It’s like it’s the news division’s summer sand castle at the beach. Build it up, knock it down. Build it up, knock it down. Because of this the program always gives off a whiff of moldy desperation in my opinion. The hosts and the reporters always seem to be caught up in a swirl of morning breath! So you turn the channel unless they’ve got a “get.” Why a bidding war for Robin Roberts has never ensued is a mystery to me.
I cannot believe they let Erica go. What a bad move. The one they should get rid of is GAIL KING. After Gail made the remark about Kate Middleton having a big butt. I almost died. She is a moose. And she only got the job because of her connections to Oprah. And we all know this.
So why doesn’t Oprah hire her? Give her the opportunity and see what she does.
The “World in 90 Seconds” opening sequence is great, and some of the specialist commentators are very good. Just make Charlie Rose the network’s authority on sleep therapy and send Gayle King back to the wig salon she came from.
Erica Hill is a diamond in the rough whose next gig – if away from CBS – will prove it.
Gayle King looks like an over-done drag queen and has the manners of a goat,so good for Erica Hill and now she does not have to see that mess up close everyday.CBS,You suck!

I agree the one they should let go is Gail King. It all comes down to who you know,Oprah. Charlie Rose should go back to his own show. The only reason to turn on CBS The Morning Show was to see Erica Hill. She was perfect for the show. Bad move CBS . I’ll go back to watching Good Morning America. As for The Morning Show you might as well cancell it now. No wonder the ratings keep dropping. Erica deserves better and I hope CBS has to pay her big bucks and regrets letting her go.

I wrote CBS several months ago when Gail King and Charlie came on board. Not a good move. Think Jeff Glore and Erika would be great!

Yes I agree Erica was fun on the weekends but changed for the regular show; weird remarks and gestures like she was afraid to say the wrong thing. It didn’t help when her guy left.

I agree that Nora is a good replacement for Erica. I like the dynamics between Gayle and Charlie, and think Nora will be an excellent addition to the team. I really enjoy “Your World in 90 seconds”, and will continue to watch CBS This Morning.
I still miss the Tracy, Ira Joe and Russ weekend team from back in the day! Love Charlie, appreciate Norah. Chris Wragge and Erica Hill had great chemistry duing the weekend show – why did they wreck it?
Erica was not the problem with the show. Gayle King is the problem. I find her rude during interviews, she interrupts the other co-hosts, asks stupid questions, appears not to be having fun and has no chemistry with anyone on the show. I don’t care if she is Oprah’s best friend she add nothing to the show, I quit watching because of her. I watch GMA because they seem to behaving fun and that is what morning tv is about in my opinion.
Why do you hate so much? Sence all of these comments are about no respect for Gail King why did Erica leave? Ask your self that question. And move on.
Glad to see CBS still has enough in the budget to buy more deck chairs to re-arrange on Titanic This Morning.

I knew the minute Norah filled inErica would be gone.Norah was quick and didn’t let Charlie run the show. Gayle just reminds me of an offshoot of Oprah.same mannerisms and speech pattern. Annoying. I like Erica but Norah was soo much better. No comparison

CBS This Morning did nothing but hold Erica back, she is much better of a reporter than CBS would let her be. There was no chemistry between Erica and Gayle because Gayle’s an idiot!! I have wanted to kick GK her in the mouth so many times. Charlie always looks like he’s been on a joy ride in a purple hearse…and one good “boo” would kill him. I agree with Jovy, keep Erica, and replace Galye with Norah! Oh, and while they are at it…can Charlie and go with Jeff Glor.
I personally think that Erica Hill will land her own talk show for CBS Television Distribution in the fall of 2013 to compete against Katie Couric on Disney ABC.

I have been a faithful viewer for years and I thought it was bad when you got rid of Harry Smith but to let Erica Hill go and stick with someone like holier than thou attitude Charlie Rose and Gail King whose only claim to fame is being personal friends with Oprah.
I have had enough! I will be tuning in to abc or nbc to see why they are better than cbs but will always know you ( whoever is in charge) are the reason cbs is not a hit.

Gayle is going to ruin this show, As for Charlie and Erica I loved their interaction.Gatle wouldnt be any where except for OPRAH.
Anyone starting a new position has to be given time to bring in the chemistry after others have been with the show for awhile. Give Gayle a chance it is hard to be the newbie on any job. I personally felt some of the same strong feelings you have and others have about Gayle King toward Erica Hill. Erica is very rigid and superior in her attitude which is annoying to watch. But as usual what ever channel I decide to switch to or not the same crazy thing is going on at another channel. Is anyone job safe?
