Sherman Hemsley, who starred in the iconic 1970s sitcom The Jeffersons, was found dead in his El Paso, TX home today, according to reports. He was 74. Hemsley was personally picked by All In The Family creator Norman Lear to play George Jefferson alongside Louise Jefferson (Isabel Sanford) as the newly arrived neighbors of Archie and Edith Bunker. Lear eventually spun off the characters in 1975 and created The Jeffersons, about a successful black family who lived in Manhattan. The show ran 10 years. Hemsley, who also starred on Broadway in the 1970s musical comedy Purlie, later starred on the sitcom Amen playing a church deacon.

R.I.P. Mr. Hemsley. You raised a whole generation of us with your brilliant comedic talent. You will be missed. Give Weezie a kiss from all of us
)!

Sherman will always be remembered for George, if not for the memorable performances but because of who the character George was during this time in American history.
George Jefferson got into it with Archie Bunker, a black man challenging a white man about his racism!!!
George then Moved on UP, portraying an upper middle class self made black man, while other shows featured characters in the projects or as criminals, maids, etc.
will miss u
RIP, Sherman.
Thank you, Mr. Hemsley. Thank you for not taking the easy way & portraying just another stereotype. You showed the world the men I was fortunate to grow up looking up to: Proud, smart, savvy independent men who knew the system, how to succeed in it & were hilarious while they did it. You will forever be remembered for movin’ us all up.
RIP, Mr Helmsley. You were an inspiration to people of all colors around the world, funny, poignant, and thought-provoking. I appreciate your work, celebrate your career, and mourn your loss. RIP as you “move on up”. Thank you.
We can now officially say both George and Weezie are in that great big apartment in the sky. He also starred in AMEN as well. Loved those cool sunglasses with all the blinking lights he once wore on an episode of AMEN that made it look like a Vegas casino.
He was also a legendary music fan and a noted collector of prog & psych records.
May you rest in peace Mr. Jefferson. You gave me & the family some good laughs growing up as a kid
To this day, when I’m in a great mood or something great happens, I break into the George Jefferson walk.
Grew up watching this show as a kid…which was a classic. Later, heard in real lifethat he was the nicest and most charming man, with a heart of gold. He was one of the greats for sure.
:’( u will be missed Shermon a.k.a. mr george jefferson….
Thank you, Sherman. You made me laugh during my childhood, and watching “The Jeffersons” still fills me with you. RIP. God bless.
