EXCLUSIVE: Showtime entertainment president David Nevins is getting back in business with his former company Imagine TV in a big way. Showtime has put in development Conquest, a sweeping period drama that has been a passion project of Imagine principal Ron Howard. Oscar-winner Howard is attached to direct Conquest, which will be written by Oscar-nominated scribe Jose Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries). Conquest, from Imagine TV and 20th Century Fox TV’s cable division Fox21, tells the story of famed Spanish Conquistador Hernan Cortes, who led the Spanish conquest in Mexico, and his clash with Moctezuma II, the last ruler of the Aztec Empire which fell at the hands of Cortes and his men. Filled with blood,
lust, gold, magic and mythology, Conquest is described as “a classic war story about two powerful men and their people ultimately leading to the destruction of the Aztec culture and the men themselves.”
Imagine partners Ron Howard and Brian Grazer executive produce with Rivera and Imagine TV president Francie Calfo. Veteran Star Trek writer Hans Beimler, who was born in Mexico City, will serve as a consultant because of his knowledge of Aztec/Mexican history. Beimler worked with Howard over the years doing research on Cortes, initially for a feature. They ultimately found the project more suited to cable series and took it to Nevins, who had known of Howard’s passion for the subject from his years as Imagine TV president. The two sides waited for Rivera to become available and brought him on board to write.
This marks Nevins’ first major collaboration with Imagine TV, which he left in Summer 2010 to take the Showtime job. His first major buy after he started at the pay cable network was another drama project from Fox21, Homeland, which went on to become a breakout commercial and critical hit. This marks WME-repped Rivera’s return to television, where he co-created the 1991 NBC series Eerie, Indiana.

FINALLY!! I’ve been waiting decades for a good Aztec movie. If its based on Bernal Diaz’ CONQUEST OF NEW SPAIN this could be an epic ADVENTURE!!
Oh crap…I don’t have Showtime!!!!!
Nice going gentlemen! I’ve been waiting to see when a project about the Aztecs would be developed at a studio. I heard that years ago Spielberg had optioned a book about the Aztecs. Its a fascinating tale, epic in scope. Good luck Jose.
Confused about 20th. Fox 21 has a high-profile project or pilot announced seemingly every day, and 20th TV has no series. Have they switched their focus? They seem to be burning it up in cable, and absent in network. Am I wrong?
Just don’t let Akiva Goldsman touch it!
Looking forward to this.
Sounds awesome!
Hans Beimler had originally set this up at Starz – and his outline was phenomenal. Great to hear that this is moving forward.
Great concept! Agree with Mick that a Diaz-based project is the utlimate action series – and (with the interaction between Cortes and Moctezuma) an ultimate character study and “clash of civilizations” piece as well.
So much for “Dark Tower.”
Yeah, this will be a slanted look at history with Howard behind the lens.
The miniseries is officially back.
so it’s going to be a historical drama about MEXICAN history – WITHOUT any Mexicans involved in the creative end ? yeah that sounds about right for Hollywood.
Hey Ron – how about you bring in actual Mexicans/ Mexican-Americans to work on this production across the board – writing/ producing/ consulting – not just as actors.
and while you’re at it – why not challenge viewers and have all the dialogue in Spanish & Nahuatl or any of the other various native languages of Mexico.
Get an actual noted historian from UCLA or from Mexico to consult on this – not a friend/ producer from a past project – especially NOT a non-Mexican, FYI – it’s insulting to Mexicans & Mexican-Americans to have others “tell us our history.”
How do you know he isn’t planning to hire Mexicans? Also, I don’t see why it matters if the historian/producers/etc. are Mexican or not, just as long as they know the subject well. It’s not like he can employ any eye witnesses.
Can’t wait for this project, with Jose Rivera and Ron Howard involved I know it will be one hell of a story!
Why doesn’t a Mexican writer or producer develop and sell one? Great idea on the languages — perhaps the script could be written in Nahuatl pictograms.
I guess some people didn´t read that Hans Beimler was born in Mexico, if a Garcia, or Lopez can be american, why Beimler doesn´t count as a Mexican, when he is born and raised in Mexico. It seems to me that some people don’t read what is written and they say what they want to say, anyway. And I´m sure that Howard and Imagine will hire many mexicans, specially if the project is shot in Mexico, which is where I was born and live. Personally and for many of my co-citizens an person born and raised in the USA with a hispanic name is not a Mexican. And a person born here in Mexico and raised in Mexico, no matter what his name is, yes… a Mexican. It’s a fantastic project.
