EXCLUSIVE: The first big drama project of the 2012 pitch season has hit the marketplace. Sleepy Hollow hails from Transformers writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, with Underworld helmer Len Wiseman on board to direct. The project, from 20th Century Fox TV and Kurtzman and Orci’s studio-based K/O Paper Products, is a modern–day supernatural thriller based on the legend of Sleepy Hollow. It follows Ichabod Crane as he partners with Sleepy Hollow’s local female sheriff to solve the
mysteries of a town ravaged by the battle between good and evil.

Kurtzman and Orci will write the script with Phillip Iscove, on whose idea the project is based. Iscove is an up-and-coming writer who has been an assistant at UTA for the past five years and has had a script on the Black List. Kurtzman has a relationship with Wiseman and reached out to him to direct. Kurtzman and Orci previously worked with Wiseman on the Hawaii Five-0 pilot, which Kurtzman and Orci co-wrote and Wiseman directed. The three executive produce Sleepy Hollow with K/O’s Heather Kadin. The project is being pitched to Fox, CBS, ABC and NBC.
This is the first TV project Kurtzman and Orci will co-write since the 2010 launch of their K/O production company as a pod based at 20th TV. They previously co-penned Fox’s Fringe with JJ Abrams and CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 reboot, both of which became series that have aired for multiple seasons. The duo started off in TV before hitting it big in features with The Legend Of Zoro, Mission: Impossible 3, Transformers and Star Trek. Kurtzman and Orci most recently co-wrote the feature People Like Us, which Kurtzman directed. Wiseman most recently directed the upcoming Total Recall feature remake. Kurtzman, Orci and Wiseman are with CAA.

Fairy tale overkill already.
Does no one else find these “reimaginings” to be getting old?
Has no one but me ever read W. Irving’s amusing tale? And why not??
Little late to the party. CW already bought one.
Such great writers, one can only hope they never run out of per-existing material to use and abuse. I think there may be some 80s tv shows they haven’t tried to rip off. How about CopRock?
If they lend this project just a small percentage of the brilliance that is “Fringe”, then I look forward to a great new series.
Or how about a live action ‘The Get Along Gang?’ Seriously, enough already guys. There has GOT to be some new, untapped material out there. Why will no one read or even give a chance to a completely original script? It seems as though new ideas get backhanded before you finish the pitch unless there’s a familiar character in there somewhere. Really getting tired of all the remakes and reboots. I don’t need to see “Monchhichis the Movie’ thanks.
Enough with that overused criticism of Kurtzman and Orci! So sour grapes…
Good for Iscove! Hopefully these two let him do his thing and not get in the way (like they did on Fringe).
If you have to do Sleepy Hollow did it in that period . We don’t need a reimaging which sounds like the same ole shit everyone is doing
Interesting. Don’t know if CBS knows this, but they were pitched a series in 2002 called Hollow Town with the very same exact concept. Originality is pretty dead in tv land.
Amazing. Is there no start to their talents?
The gap between the product these guys create and the business they do is pretty incredible.
Would love to know how a young writer with few (if any) credits manages to get a project setup with Kurtzman & Orci. Who made the connection?
oh, good… those guys! Can’t wait to see all the plot holes. Maybe Transformers, who can be crushed and stop working when cold air hits them, come flying from the frozen depths of space, SLAM into the planet, and then transform into headless horsemen??? Just one direction you could go.
A female sheriff in the 1790s… yeah, right.
The article says nothing about the 1790′s. It would obviously be a 21st century Ichabod Crane and the female sheriff of a town called Sleepy Hollow.
You can already tell how they’ll cheat this, make her an “exception” bucking the system, pooh-poohed by certain stuffy locals, etc. I mean, can you imagine a network show that actually presented a realistic view of late 18th century gender roles?!
Talent, brains and a lot of hard work. Something y’all seem to be missing from the looks of these hateful comments. Stop drinking that Hate-orade people.
Yep, if you don’t like TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN and COWBOYS & ALIENS and HAWAI 5-0 and PEOPLE LIKE US you’re obviously just a hater and shouldn’t express any opinion whatsoever.
Hey tufguy! ,
If you actually read the article, you’ll noticed he worked his ass off as an assistant at UTA for 5 years. My guess is that has something to do with it.
Great…the original wonders are at it again.
Look for any new voices outside of UTA assistants?
Why should they? Just keep it in the family.
That’s how you get on the fabled BLACKLIST.
Have to be in the system first; on the train with
as many of your bosses as possible?
Too bad it’s not about writing a great story called a movie.
Hey! Here are some ideas to re – imagine, bring some new voices
and visions to the rest of us:
E.T. — but really, take it one step further. Keep him in drag.
Hit a whole new quadrant.
JAWS — still born in the ocean. Blood everywhere. No biggie.
The ocean washes it all away anyway.
Anything from the Bible…the Koran, etc.
No one reads anymore; and if ya gotta plagarize…who’s gonna sue?
you answered your own question–if they are looking for voices within UTA, get within UTA. they probably hire 20 newbies a year. so do all the other big agencies.
Phil never had a script on the blacklist.
Good for him, he has been a career assistant at UTA for at least 9 years (no way its only 5). So its great to see him find a little success.
Iscoves idea is original and great, and the fact its ignited such amazing response from these auspices is proof it has legs. Cant wait to see who outbids the others for the show. I will watch it.
Steve Thomas–There are many of us in the business who spent years pushing mailcarts and being assistants and busting our butt trying to get into the system. Yes, we get preferential treatment over people trying to send scripts from anywhere else. Is it surprising to get a job in the business to have better access?
It’s really easy to overcome–just do what we did. LA, New York–just move to one and get a job. Why is that a problem?
Amen. You have to put in the work.
The poster boys for diminished expectations knock another one out of the park.
