EXCLUSIVE… UPDATE: Sources are telling me that Sony Pictures‘ The Amazing Spider-Man swept the Asian box office this weekend as the much-anticipated actioner opened early in a handful of international territories. The reboot of Marvel‘s most popular character will be released July 3rd in the U.S./Canada where rival studios report the tracking has been flat. ”It’s off to a fantastic start overseas,” an insider gushes to me. Here are the updated numbers from Sony Pictures:
In its first weekend of release, The Amazing Spider-Man grossed an estimated $50.2 million in 13 overseas markets in Asia while Europe remains under the influence of the Euro Cup football championships until tonight, with school vacations in full effect starting tomorrow.
KOREA earned $13.4M on 1,213 screens, capturing a 71% market share. The KW15.8B total for Thursday to Sunday is the 3rd biggest of all time for a Hollywood film, behind only the 2nd and 3rd Transformers films. This is 24% bigger than Spider-Man 3 and 10% more than Avengers.
JAPAN opened with $11.4M on 1,092 screens, pulling in an estimated 84% of the country’s Saturday-Sunday weekend box office.
INDIA grossed $6.0M on 1,236 screens, the biggest opening ever for a Hollywood film, 74% bigger than Spider-Man 3, 73% more than Avengers, and more than double the lifetime box office of The Dark Knight.
The PHILIPPINES bowed with $3.2M on 529 screens, capturing the entire market in its opening weekend. This is the 4th biggest Friday-Sunday opening ever (behind Avengers, Transformers 3, and Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1.)
TAIWAN did $2.9M on 268 screens while taking in 73% of the market’s weekend total. It is the 2nd biggest Fri-Sun weekend of the year (behind Avengers.)
HONG KONG earned $2.7M on 158 screens, pulling in 84% of the total market. This is the 4th biggest Friday-Sunday opening of all time.
SINGAPORE grossed $2.5M on 128 screens, the 3rd biggest Friday-Sunday opening of all time.
THAILAND opened to $1.9M on 320 screens, capturing 81% of the market. 10th biggest Friday-Sunday opening of all time.
VIETNAM grossed $425K on 41 screens, the 6th biggest Friday-Sunday opening of all time (and the 5th biggest Hollywood film.) It surpassed the lifetime box office total of Spider-Man 3.
In Europe, GERMANY grossed an estimated $4.2M on 755 screens (50% market share), HOLLAND earned $850K on 113 ,AUSTRIA opened to $480K on 85, and SWITZERLAND did $290K on 130.

PREVIOUS: In Korea the 3D film debuted to $13M, bigger than Marvel’s The Avengers which scored one of the biggest openings ever there. The sources say that India took in $5+M, more than Avengers, for the biggest opening ever there for an American film. Singapore, Hong Kong, Phillippines all reported “huge” openings, too. It’s a very auspicious start for director Marc Webb and stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in the Spider-Man origins film similar to the original told just 10 years ago. Disney may own Marvel now, but Sony Pictures doesn’t have to share its worldwide box office grosses from The Amazing Spider-Man. Instead, Disney/Marvel receives all the merchandising loot.

Gritty!
If it doesn’t do that well domestic then I bet you Disney and Sony are gonna cut a deal for web head to play a supporting role in the avengers 2. He scores on that front then Sony feels more assured in moving forward with a sequel. Watch.
Some of you need to get out more. There’s an awful lot of people out there who really want to see this.
Well some are plants. In this economy, don’t begrudge them their paycheck.
As it is now I can’t understand why domestic box office is such a big deal. Movies these days are global products, and we should look at the global box office take of movies.
In 20 years when you have between 300-800 million middle class chinese , we will be talking about chinese box office as the US box office will be a midget compared to it. Spidey will not do Avengers numbers, but it will make money.
I’d be more excited if instead of another origin story this was about Spiderman trying to overcome his addiction to huffing Black Flag.
I’m curious… If you were a studio executive, would you rather the film have a foreign gross of 500M or a domestic gross of 500m? You can only choose 1….
Talk about selective reporting. Wait till the Euopean numbers come in. Nowhere like this positive. Will be a very different story. Looking forward to seeing how they spin or bury this news.
Selective reporting or selective reading. It clearly says in the article that the movie was released only in the 13 Asian Markets. Euro 2012 will end tonight and all the studios were waiting for this to get over to release their movies there.
Yeah….It’ll do fine in the US but I don’t see HUGE turnout though. There’s definite interest, but the excitement level I feel is a little low. Either way, I hope it’s a good movie.
I’m excited for this one. Saw a great trailer, have read great reviews from real critics, and can’t wait to swing in Imax. I know that reboots don’t perform as well and that this was initially thought of as a cash grab, but it looks like this is an actual quality film. Can’t wait for the future.
Give it up, they’re trying to use these to excite folks back in the US…I don’t think it’s working. Bottomline, stateside audiences are far too smart, they’re looking at this and saying, didn’t I just see this not so long ago? why do I have to go back to the beginning again! It needed another 10 years or so like Batman and a whole new take…3D does not count as a whole new take!
No. Spidey is Marvel’s best superhero because his own personal universe is filled with brilliant characters like J. Jonah Jameson, Mary Jane Watson, Aunt May, Gwen Stacy, Norman and Harry Osborn, Flash Thompson etc. Not to mention his excellent villains. What works is the marriage between superhero antics and the personal sophisticated soap opera drama. Give the brand to Marvel and they will compromise all of that with SHIELD and Avengers related gimmicks interfering in the Spider-Man solo films. The Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon on Disney XD is a perfect example of this. Let the Spider franchise remain at Sony, but get better, more dynamic writers for the sequels. Seriously, Steve Kloves? The man is as generic and unimaginative a writer as one gets.
I would, however, not mind seeing Spider-Man in The Avengers if Sony signs a joint deal with Marvel allowing the webslinger to appear in the Avengers movies.
This movie is amazing. Andrew Garfield is hot! whew!
I’m thinking nowhere near Avengers. The ironic part is that I am a Marvel fan… the trailers that I have seen make it seem they have a more accurate take on the character ( the wisecracking, the non-organic web shooters) and I have seen nothing I would take away as a negative, and yet I am STILL not excited about seeing this. This reboot is too close?
I don’t even think this is a Netflix rental…
What happened to all the cool movies?
So? “Battleship” opened huge overseas, it bombed domestically. Rebooting this so soon was a stupid idea and everyone knows it, if they were smart they would have waitted a couple more years and used a better villian.
The Avengers did so well because Joss Whedon, all of the actors and the previous films in the Marvel cinematic universe have a fan base. As well, it got glowing reviews. Spider-Man has stars that are on the verge of being huge. The reviews are not going to be as good as The Avengers, but like Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, the Spider-Man films will keep getting better and keep growing.
Just saw The Amazing Spider-Man yesterday, the movie is truly worth watching in the theater. The 3d effects are subtle and well done. Garfield is a great actor and an amazing Spider-Man. I never thought I would say it but he is better than McGuire. On top of that the (background) story is better (and more compellingly) constructed than in the previous version, the movie is funny, has action, great CGI, and great chemistry between Garfield and Stone. I really hope there will be a sequel, because I will return to the theater to watch that!
I have zero interest in the new Spider-man movie. It looks so lifeless and dull.
I have seen this movie and it delivers. Nothing to complain about. Quit bitching and just go enjoy the movie!
I think Amazing Spider-man will be a moderate hit in the US. Of course there’s not going to be a ton of buzz with the over 25 male demographic. It’s being made for kid and tweens who will eat it up. Garfield has the tweenie bopper girls swooning and boys like Spider-man. Broad appeal family movie over a hot 4th of July weekend is going to make money no matter if its a reboot of a franchise from 10 years ago or not. Plus, the target market likely didn’t even see the first 3.
The plants have been trying to trash this Spider Man film since MIB III came out; talking about how great MIB III REALLY was and pretending to be insiders disappointed by “disastrous test screenings” for Spider Man, angry Marvel fanboys, making false claims that there’s no excitement for this Spider Man film, and all sorts of things.
The magic isn’t there???? There’s more magic in this one than there ever was in the previous ones. Garfield is way better than Toby Maguire as Spidey. Everytime I see Maguire and his duck lips on screen, I want to punch him in the mouth.
All these folks talking about how this movie is going to bomb are Disney plants and/or fanboys hoping for the rights to go back to Marvel/Disney so they can make another formulaic comic movie for all ages. Btw, since when is making a comic “dark” bad? It’s worked well for Batman.
In India Spiderman is the most popular superhero character. And yes crowds loving this movie. Years ago Spiderman 3 took best hollywood opening then 3d came Avatar did good business but 2012 became more successful than all. Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible also got good success one thing more Bond is also very popular character here in India.
Saw the trailer in 3D and I was sold. I think you people are the same ones who didn’t support the batman reboot and now look at ya.
Haha. You guys are funny. Seriously, if the wit was any better, i might die.
This movie is a funny one. Theres si many different feekings about it. Some people are excited because they hate the previous movies, some are excited cause they liked the previous movies, some people are uninterested cause of the previous movies, some are skeptical because of the length between movies.
For the most part, though, i think ther is enough interest in this to make sure its a success. How big remains to be seen
