The 1989 film has gotten a contemporary remake with an all-black cast. Queen Latifah stars and exec produces the movie, which chronicles the lives and friendship of six women in Louisiana. She is joined by Alfre Woodard, Phylicia Rashad, Jill Scott, Adepero Oduye and Rashad’s daughter, Condola Rashad. Here’s the clip.

There are many cases where the divide in the shared history of black and whites is wide enough that a classic story from either camp takes on a nuance and new meaning when cast with actors of the opposite race.
This is not one of them.
I am compelled to agree with you, only because the original Steel Magnolias is my most favorite movie of all time. Sally Field’s performance can not be beat. However, I do want to see this before I make a final judgement on it.
Next on Lifetime A Color Purple with an all white cast! Yea buddy!!
You are making a joke but I would like the see the Color Purple through the eyes of a Chinese or Muslim woman.
@PTSMITH: Color Purple with an all-white cast? Could be interesting. You should try to get it made instead of being sarcastic… Buddy!
As I’m watching the promo, I find myself making comparisons to the performances in the original. No one can top Sally Field’s work, not even the Queen. Also, if you’ve never seen the original, this promo unfortunately reveals the entire plot.
I am so excited about this! I love the original Steel Magnolias and the new one has an equally wonderful cast!
I won’t even watch a trailer to this.
They’re forgetting the whole “Lightening in a Bottle” aspect.
I could remake Star Wars with an all Asian cast. It ain’t gonna have the same magic. It’s just going to be stupid.
They should do an all-white version of “A Raisin in the Sun”.
New version of the miniseries Roots…… with the cast of Jersey Shore!
Ratings Bonanza!!
There are instances however, where simply casting a black actor in a role originally played by a white actor would not work. For example, you could never do a feature remake of, say, ‘The Wild, Wild West’ TV series because it would make no sense to cast, say, a black actor in the James West role. You see, back then…
Oh, wait a minute…
Seriously, that shit was funny!
I agree. Though I like Will Smith, I really think “The Wild, Wild West” remake with him in the Jim West was ill-advised and an overblown mess. Regarding the “Steel Magnolia” remake, I would think there would have to be some major plot changes to accommodate the change in the racial composition of the cast; however, I’ll reserve that judgment until after I see it.
I wish that Hollywood would go for more originality. There are just too many remakes, and most of them fall flat.
next up , an all Hispanic and all Asian version…. maybe that’ll be a skit on next season’s SNL( though as far as I know they have neither any Black , Hispanic or Asian cast members… as per usual) Oh yeah, they do have a Black cast member, I forgot.
Seriously people? It’s not the same thing. While Steel Magnolias features white characters, the story itself isn’t specific to white characters. The Color Purple, Roots and A Raisin in the Sun are stories that are specific to black characters.
Only Roots is race specific, Roy. The Color Purple and A Raisin in The Sun are stories of that could apply to any people. Overcoming abuse and upward mobility do not belong to my people.
Sorry Fred, that comment was meant for Roy.
Actually Fred, Steel Magnolias is based on a true story about a white family. So your comment in untrue.

Sorry I love the original. Maybe the original cast of “SM” can do an all white remake of “Waiting To Exhale”
They have. It’s called every movie with white-only female leads ever made.
Racial Flips of classic entertainment productions have always seemed to be a next step for an industry that is drying up with ideas. The cast for this reboot seems particularly pruney; which prune will play Julia Roberts?
One movie that I did like and would not mind seeing with different racial casts is Death at a Funeral. The white cast was OK. But when the movie went “afro-american”, it was hilarious. A third version should be all hispanic; a fourth asian, a fifth muslim, and then the sixth would be a fan favorite race. The only commmon denominator for the movie series would be of course Peter Dinklage who made the first two movies funny.
Some of ya’ll on here just don’t like to see black people work unless they’re representing your favorite basketball team…but it’s fine because the movie is already produced and will be released on Lifetime so there!
Steel Magnolias is a story can be translated into many different scenarios by a range of actors from ANY background…A Raisin in the Sun, Roots or The Color Purple CAN NOT because NEVER in the history of the United States have white people been enslaved and oppressed. And im not saying this to start a race war on this site but people, lets just use a little common sense and keep movies that show pre-civil rights era movies out of this conversation.
Great post, Gerard. I’m just shocked some hillbilly hasn’t said the old racist chestnut “How come there’s not a White Entertainment Television channel, hyuk.”
Okay so you’re cool with the Color Purple being remade with black rappers and directed by McG?
Gimme a break. If this remake was an all-white cast I still wouldn’t watch it. Just like I wouldn’t watch an Indiana Jones remake with Taylor Lautner.
There are plenty of writers out there with good ideas. You don’t have to rehash something that was done beautifully the first time around.
Gerard I feel you really but you miss the point. No one is mad because our people are working. They are just tired of lameness and stuff like this is lame. It ignores all of the great project out there which never get made. Race flipping projects is pandering and condescension to black talent.
Just be glad Tyler Perry isn’t playing the lead in this. I know he wanted to.
Steel Magnolias is a great story. I have no issue with a racial flip on the story. The problem is, the original movie had such great performances, there is no way not to compare them. Even Alfre Woodard can’t do it justice.
I can’t wait for the remake of the remake. I think it is going to be called “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Steel Magnolias.”
You are so wrong for that…but your comment is funny! LOL!
What a total clusterf*ck of a promo. A mishmash of dialogue, most having no logical position, horrible song, and WTF is that montage of reaction shots at the end? Pathetic.
bbc’s cranford this ain’t…where’s beyond-say, jenny “craig” holiday & halle?…oh, & throw in ja’net jackson 4 over-the-top ham…
this lifetime potboiler should’ve starred the fab thesp talent of beyonce, janet jackson, halle & jennifer hudson w/ the old black girls played by diana ross, the supremes & gladys knight & her pips (in drag)…
I saw Steel as a play in 1987 off broadway. Great play. Loved the film . No sure how this version will be , but I’ll watch it . Wonderful characters . But Hollywood needs to stop with all the remakes . Time to move on and hire actual writers with something new to say. This was an original play once
Um…excuse me. All this hate and no one has even seen the final product?
Typical.
What can I say? It looks well made, well cast, and probably well written and well acted. Unfortunately, I’ve seen the original, so even unconsciously, I will be comparing the two versions.
I think it’s interesting there were no black characters in the ORIGINAL version. Not that there had to be, but wouldn’t it have been nice to be a little more representative of society? For instance, the Darryl Hannah character, who gets a job as an assistant at the shop could have easily been a black woman. (Or the Dolly Parton character, who owns the shop.)
Whatever. The only reason they do things like this remake is because of the appalling lack of color in the movies that were made previously, like a whole segment of the population didn’t exist. Sad, but at least now we are not so color-blind.
Based on the trailer, I don’t think this is going to redefine Steel Magnolias.
First, the cast is making rather middle of the road choices – character and acting-wise (or is it the casting?) The photography is too gooey-eyed and the direction overall seems pretty flat overall.
This remake should be good. It can/is being translated well with an all black cast. Seems appropriate being set in the south but this story could be told with any race I would think. Sad thing is that it isn’t appearing on the big screen but then it doesn’t star Tyler Perry as a woman or Denzel Washington. These seem to be the only two draws for moviegoers to a movie with an all black cast/star that are not in the black community these days!
I am VERY upset about this “remake” !! The original is my all time favorite movie & I REFUSE to watch this new one. The first Steel Magnolias is a classic… why fix or redo something that isn’t broken??? This makes me angry every single time I see the previews on Lifetime for the remake. I DO NOT like this… AT ALL !!!!
