BREAKING… Steven Tyler has decided to leave his role as a judge on the Fox show. He just released this statement via the network: “After some long…hard…thoughts…I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress American Idol before she boils my rabbit. I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I’m back — but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I’ve got two fists in the air and I’m kicking the door open with my band.”
Tyler arrived as a judge for the singing competition show for the 10th season, along with fellow new judge Jennifer Lopez, who also is deciding whether to return for Season 12 after signing a one-year contract at the time. But ratings on Idol have sagged since the departure of the judges they replaced — Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul — and even News Corp COO Chase Carey noticed the dip, telling Wall Street analysts in May that “our challenge for next year is to put some fresh energy in” the show after “we probably didn’t do enough this year” in terms of changes.

Said Fox President of Alternative Mike Darnell in Tyler’s departure announcement today: “It’s been a tremendous honor to have Steven – one of the most prolific artists in the world – on American Idol for the past two seasons,” said Mike Darnell, President of Alternative Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “He’s been a terrific judge, a true friend and great mentor to everyone involved with the show, and we know he’ll continue to be a huge inspiration to Idol hopefuls for years to come. We are very sad that Steven has chosen to focus more on his music, but we always knew when we hired a rock ’n’ roll legend, he would go back to the music. We all wish him all the best and would love to have him back on the show anytime.”

Did he type it in the manner of William Shatner speaking on purpose? What’s with the …’s?
I’m not surpised by this at all … and, I’m sure Jennifer’s announcement will be next. Kudos to him (and, his team) for releasing this FIRST.
Hey, it’s all about positioning … right?
He did a great job … and, succeded in re-inventing himself for the new millenia!
Smart Move. Good for you. Go for it!
And, he picked up a new best friend … Matt Lauer!
Now if they could just get rid of Randy Jackson.
I hope there’s no truth to the rumor that Randy Jackson will be replaced by Adam Lambert. I’m not a big Jackson fan, but Lambert?
The writing is already on the wall. There will be three new faces in the judges chair next season. Adam Lambert will be one of them.
Maybe they should pull the plug on this before they run it into the ground.
As Steve Martin once said, “Some people have a way with words and other people simply don’t have way.”
A good creative change would be to take the show off the air and try to forget about it. It has not produced a single true star… that is, someone who can sell records, concert tickets, and has real staying power. Simon Cowell made it watchable and last seasons panel of judges were vapid. NBC has made a brilliant move with Americas Got Talent and Howard Stern. TV shows need to have an “edge”. If its all gloss you just start to choke.
Umm…what about Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood (two of the best-selling artists worldwide)?
The exceptions to the rule.
Steven Tyler on Idol was a debacle from day one. He is wise to bolt. It was a bad fit, and he brought zero to the thankless role of judge.
They should do away with judges altogether and just let Seacrest Out handle it.
One down and time to oust Lopez as well and bring in some fresher talent to help evaluate the current crop of people auditioning for the upcoming season. Seacrest is outlasting his welcome too and time for a new host as well, or otherwise, just cancel the damn thing.
I second that. Time to cancel.
That photo–or more specifically, that outfit–is effing amazing! Takes some nuts to put that on in the morning. Kudos!
While I don’t care for her stuff, the comment that idol has produced nobody is laughable when Kelly Clarkson is multiple platinum.. 12 million sold and two Grammy wins. And Carrie Underwood with 14 million sold and 5 Grammy wins. I tend to also think the show is drek, but the claim it’s produced ‘nobody’ is laughable
It’s not produced a Michael Jackson or Whitney Houston. A REAL star. Someone who has crossed generations and has hits that EVERYONE KNOWS, regardless of age, and will STILL know in another 30 years. That’s what the show promised and has FAILED, with a capital “F” to produce. … That type of raw talent can’t be created on a stupid TV show like Idol.
That is a truly dumb standard to try to hold American Idol to.
1 – NOBODY creates a Michael Jackson or Whitney Houston. They’re born.
2 – With the way the music industry is today, there will never be stars of that magnitude again. Idol or no Idol.
3 – American Idol gives somebody a huge chance to do something with their careers. Some of them thrive (Clarkson, Underwood), some of them completely bomb (Hicks, DeWyze) and some have solid but unspectacular careers (Cook, Fantasia). But that is ALL it is. It’s a huge launching pad. It’s up to the talent’s job to go from having a launching pad to being a success. If the Idol winner puts out a terrible album nobody likes, that’s not the show’s fault, that’s the winner’s fault for not doing their job.
4 – American Idol doesn’t decide who wins, the voters do. If you don’t like who wins, you can’t blame the producers, judges, show…you have to blame the terrible taste of the idiots at home.
5 – Idol may not always produce megastars but it ALWAYS produces talent and that is why I watch it. As a 36 year old man who’d always choose a Johnny Thunders over a Madonna, I’m not the target demo for this show. But I enjoy watching it because the vast majority of the people who end up on this show are amazing singers with REAL talent. The pop world is constantly filled with all these femobots who can’t sing without the aid of computers and when one fembotgets old, the record company shoves out a new one. There’s very little talent to be had. It’s just some young dumb girl with nice breasts dancing around and lip syncing. Idol is one of the few places in the music biz that actually still pushes substance over style. Like the contestants, hate the contestants, but almost all of them have talent. They’re not having a who sounds better with pro tools contest. They’re not pumping out more Katy Perry clones. They may go platinum, they may sell nothing, but they’ll out-sign Keisha in their sleep.
..and don’t forget Daughtry and jennifer Hudson.
No, Idol hasn’t yet produced a neurotic pop star who bribed doctors to sedate him to death nor a diva who OD’d and drowned in a bathtub. Good for them.
Both are awful and will not be relevant in 10 years. That’s why I included “staying power” because I realize a few of them have made some money.
Grammy Winners? You mean like Christopher Cross and Milli Vanilli? Good art is not defined by meaningless accolades, my friend.
Exactly. Talent like MJ or Whitney Houston don’t come around often, but Kelly Clarkson and Whats-her-name are far from it. They sell some records but they’re flashes in the pan. A true star is not just a one-dimensional pop singer. Its frustrating to be forced to explain something so basic to some of these commenters.
I’m guessing that Tyler picked up some new fans on Idol and that Aerosmith concerts accordingly draw a larger crowd than they used to. Does anyone know if that is true? If so, I’m sure his band mates are getting over their original disdain for their front man’s stint on the show.
I agree. I enjoyed Steven on IDOL and will miss him.
You’ve done it again Steven. That’s why we love you. That’s why America loves you. You’re beautiful. Over the top Steve. America hears you.
I bet Aerosmith picked up millions of new fans … green is good!
They should be erecting a Tyler-memorial right now … Aerosmith that is!
