BREAKING: Tobey Maguire, who parted ways yesterday with CAA, has just signed with WME. His run with CAA went back to 2003, and the agency repped him through his Spider-Man years (though the deals were made by Gersh before he left there). I’d heard yesterday that the relationship with the agency had run its course and Maguire will take the next steps in his career with WME. Maguire just took a lead role in the Jason Reitman-directed Labor Day, and he plays Nick Carraway in the Baz Luhrmann-directed The Great Gatsby, which Warner Bros opens Christmas Day. He remains repped by Management 360.

Sounds like a good movie. Tobey can really act. Very talented. He was awesome in The English Patient!
Um – Tobey wasn’t in THE ENGLISH PATIENT. Were you making a joke like loving Malkovich in that jewel thief movie, like Maguire is interchangable? Or were you thinking of like CIDER HOUSE RULES?
I’m noticing a pattern.
Good lord! Someone feed this guy some meat!
Nice get for WME. He was languishing at the Death Star.
Since we have a different Spiderman, and it’s not Raimi, I think Tobey is using his great actor skills to take on more meaningful roles…anyone can wear a Superhero Suit right? Except maybe Robert Downey Jr.
He just confirmed he is an idiot.
CAA is becoming like the old William Morris now and WME is becoming like the old CAA. back then agents and clients left WMA for CAA and now they go from CAA to WME. As far as UTA goes nothing has changed. clients and agents will continue to leave UTA for WME and CAA.
This guy is a zero. He’s had some great parts in the past and done nothing with them
He’s a talented dude, but was way too far down the food chain at CAA. The good thing for him is that A-list directors always seem to want to work with him, so he’ll do well with WME.
Tobey started his career with Gersh who put him into Spiderman, Seabiscuit, Wonder Boys. Then he left for what he thought were greener pastures and his career went backwards. Better to be a big fish then a small fish. WME is a lateral move.
Agreed. I’m glad that someone else remembered that Leslie Siebert and Gersh were solely responsible for all the success Tobey has had. They were the ones who made the Spiderman deal! SInce he left Gersh he has done nothing of any consequence. A typical ungrateful and disloyal actor thinking they can do better and never do! They never seem to learn!
hey, come on now! nothing of consequence? he did The Good German! and Brothers! Oh, wait….
I was a Gersh client for years and was finally able to get to one of the top agencies and am 1000 times happier. Better agents, better connections, better everything. Maybe CAA wasn’t right for Tobey, but there are a lot of rungs on the ladder until he has to cross Gersh’s threshold again.
Wow, I really didn’t think they’d get close but if this trend becomes popular, WME may actually dethrone CAA as the powerhouse.
Are CAA’s clients getting sick of the in-house BS? “CAA actors, CAA packages, CAA produces, CAA finances, CAA, CAA, CAA…”
You think WME is any better in that regard?
Phase 3 : Has to play an adult. The down side of all that Gersh success and was probably the albatross around CAA’s neck. It’s the kind of stuff that I.C.M. used to do really well. (Phase 3.) Has a shot at some new writers and filmmakers I guess but even that’s a career guesstimation because the perception problems are a systemic equation. Notice the manager is often the new loyalty. Compare to the eighties when it was only the comedy managers who typically usually survived.
Gotta love the revisionist history that CAA put him into Spiderman.
Who at WME signed him?
Always seemed puzzling that Tobey left for CAA re: power agencies. He seems different than their mentality. T.M was never a big A-list star the same way Pitt or Smith or Clooney to matter at CAA. And who knows if the dreaded “TV” word was thrown about. But Tobey is a very decent actor and deserves shots at interesting projects.
Nobody likes Toby. Gatsy looks terrible.
Been a difficult to transition when he is not man. More a man-child.
You’re wrong.
Tobey’s career was well handled by Leslie Siebert. He fell hard at CAA. It’s not the agency but the passion of the agent. He will never be a priority elsewhere. Great Gatsby will not help anyone.
He can always make a good living playing poker he’s really good at poker so he’s still got that goin’ for him. Celebrity Poker!
Gatsby will make him huge again! Look what that role did for Sam Waterston!
he is not a movie star – he happened to get a huge franchise in spiderman. he should call it a day and do a cool scripted series now. or in a couple of years we will see him on CSI: Wichita.
Best of luck Tobey…Go ahead..
