Univision was the No. 1 television network in America among the coveted adults 18-49 and adults 18-34 demos last week — just the third time that has happened. From July 2-8, the Spanish-language net beat CBS by 42%, ABC by 15%, NBC by 7% and Fox by 1% in 18-49. Among 18-34 the spread was more pronounced, with Univision outdelivering CBS by 150%, NBC by 60%, ABC by 57% and Fox by 16%. Last week, the telenovela La Que No Podia Amar was the top Univision show in both demos and the top broadcast show in America at 10 PM. La Que No Podia Amar actually starts airing at 9:59 each weeknight. The 8:58 PM lead-in, telenovela Abismo De Pasion, was No. 2 overall for the week for the network. It topped Adults 18-34 in the 9 PM slot and was number two among Adults 18-49. Granted, it was a week with a lot of repeats on the English-language networks, but it also included the Olympic Trials on NBC and new episodes of ABC’s The Bachelorette and NBC’s America’s Got Talent, among other. It marks the third time the Spanish-language network has topped its English counterparts in the key metrics, each time taking advantage of the summer malaise: Univision was No. 1 in 18-49 and 18-34 the week of August 30-September 5, 2010, and the week of August 29-September 4, 2011.
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.

There are 300 English speaking stations and one Spanish speaking one. Of course they are going to beat all the others individually. This is a useless stat.
you nailed it!
and they’re also poisoning their listeners with the same poison the msm poisons the rest of the country with.
An ad buyer does not have the choice of Univision verses all other channels, he has a choice of each channel individually. The single channel that would have given him the most viewers would have been Univision. If you are a buyer or a seller of commercials that is a pretty big deal.
That just means that more television stations will enter the Spanish market, until the viewership falls in line with the other stations. Then again, it didn’t really do THAT much better than Fox. It could just mean that the less watched stations might start to drop out.
Very good point!
What about Telemundo?
Exactly… this is the same argument why Fox News shows have higher ratings than the rest of the news channels. It is the only news channel catering to the needs of the crazies.
Another thing to consider is the holidays. Every time this has occurred has been during weeks containing July 4th and Labor Day. Both are uniquely American and people traditionally spend their time outside not plopped down in the recliner.
Onther hopeless and helpless demo ignoring signs of the times.
No Telemundo, also is Spanish Speaking. Add to that, that the FAUX viewers, the reason they have done well over the years is that they have captured the bat krazies, the right wingers, teabaggers that refuse to listen or watch anything that makes sense. And even though, they are a minority of viewers in general, they are the only one’s that seem to hate anything, anyone with some semblance of logic! Birds of a feather, ultra right wing feather, stick together. Plus, the seem to get most of the corporations, businesses, to program television to their station. as most business leaders, corporate board, strategy leaderss would much prefer the right wing talk that favors the greed of the corporations and wall street!
According to whom? Was this a Nielsen rating? That’s kind of an important piece of information, no? If it was a Nielsen rating, so what. They’re proven to be inaccurate a lot of the time and they have very sketchy methods in choosing households.
Well, if that’s the case, then they need to start showing more diversity, reflecting the demographics of America…just like they have demanded of American TV!!!
Your not invited pendeja!
I would watch them too but their TV is just crap.
Yeah, you keep watching your Kardashians, Houswives, Jersey Shore, and all your other garbage. Looks like its making you very intelligent.
Ha ha ha ha, for all of the haters I don’t watch UNIVISION that much (only for socker games) but I’m glad you Kardashian lovers….
“There are 300 English speaking stations and one Spanish speaking one. Of course they are going to beat all the others individually. This is a useless stat.”
Depends on your perspective of “useful.” They’re using it to mold opinion so, in their world, it serves a purpose and is, thus, “useful.” But in the real world, it really is meaningless.
They are watching Novelas, “La Que No Podia Amar” and “Abismo De Pasion” which are near equivalents to English Soaps, but worse. And yes this trash is molding opinions.
Get a grip!!! Are you remotely aware of 2010 U.S. Census reports and/or Standard & Poors??? Being bilingual is a big PLUS not a minus. Wake up and smell the coffee!! Probably from Colombia…what language do you think they speak there????
Statistically speaking, most immigrants (Spanish-speakers) do not read or watch educational, political commentary or science program. Thus the Spanish language networks DO NOT offer them! So, the top programs are soap opera-style programs. According to UNIVISION’s own stats 79% are women.
Well, none of this is news!
Hrmm… this article further justifies why we continue to fall behind academically in this country.
La que no podia amar is a great novela. We watch it every night. We get together and enjoy the ups and downs. Well done UNIVISION!!
it’s fantasy! you’re a child!
Its entertainment! your an inbred!
It has annoyed me for years that the Spanish language stations get away with not having to display English translations.
They should be forced to perform to the same regulations that English Language stations do & pay the added costs of translations.
The same goes for the Farsi, Greek, Far Eastern, etc. programs.
i know right ,
Univision would gat a tremendous amount of new viewers if they at least would use the SAP and have that audio in engrish
THEY DO HAVE ENGLISH SAP. AND THERE’S MORE THAN ONE SPANISH SPEAKING CHANNEL. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT.
Juan, please come to my house & show me these spanish stations that have english subtitles. We have more spanish stations than english in my city & not 1 of them has english options.
Roland R. is right on the money. Why doesn’t UNIVISION provide English subtitles? With all their advertising they have the money to do the subtitles. My cable company carries UNIVISION. I pay for cable including that channel. The programming looks interesting, but I don’t speak the language. At least I could put together some words and phrases if I heard them in Spanish and read it in English. Who is the contact to register a complaint about their lack of English subtitles?
Porque, we don’t want you to watch pendejo!
“hendizzel” why did you insult me?
Seems like a lot of people on this blog have no idea what they are writing about. Telemundo is the biggest competitor of Univision, which yes it means Univision is not the only spanish network in the US. Additionally, Univision and Telemundo have added the CC3 option for all English speakers in all of their primetime shows
Well you will have to live with it. This is the reality of america now.
I can’t stand thier programing. I find the varitey shows boring and thier sit coms and soaps annoying.
a few decades from now there will only be one English speaking station
Hopefully not Fox News
Instead of whining about Univision….the real thing here is that the English language stations in the US are so full of crap, and are hemorrhaging audience.
Also, the Univision win is impressive, since in many markets they are still on low-power stations who do not benefit from the must-carry rule a full-power station enjoys. Which means….Univision viewers have to use old-skool over-the-air antenna to watch programs
In Orlando where I live, the Univision affiliate gets cable and sat clearance, but its over-the-air signal is not real strong. In a market 40% Hispanic, there are a lot of potential viewers missing out
And, remember, Univision has to compete with the Mexican stations in cities along the US border….and many of the Univision programs have already aired on Televisa and TV Azteca
No, I do not work for Univision. But, I do watch Despierta America…the ladies are pretty and everyone is always having fun
Actually, there are multiple Spanish broadcasting networks – Univision is just the biggest.
So the subdivision of English audience = auto win for “1″ Spanish network isn’t automatically true.
What is true is that there are *more* English networks than Spanish networks…but then again, there are also more English speakers…it is all a matter of ratios.
This only proves how stupid advertisers are. My pints (hopefully not censored by the monitor)
1) folks over 49 own the VAST majority of wealth and income in the US
2) seen the unemployment stats for 18-21 yr olds lately?
3) education debt is the #2 burden of college grads (#1 being unemployment) …how much disposable income do they have?
4) folks over 49 have less debt, more disposable income, and have savings. How many 30 year olds can say the same?
go ahead advertisers and media buyers, keep spending money on your “coveted” demo…..you’ve got more money that they do!
But CONGRATS to Univision!
Even though I can understand a little bit of Spanish, I must say that Sabado Gigante is a very good show and I can see if Univision really did well on Saturdays nights also.
Sabado Gigante! My family has watched that show since I was a little girl! I don’t watch it anymore, but whenever I do catch an episode it makes me all nostalgic and happy.
I personally enjoy univision’s local broadcast news from entravision and educational and sports programming. They are not biased in presentation. Helps me sharpen my Spanish.
Univision is AMERICAN tv. and Hispanics are diverse, if you just take a look at the colors of people on Univision. (black, white, brown)
I’m a native English speaker (with no Latin background) and I watch La Que No Podia Amar daily with Spanish subtitles. I comprehend about 75% of it. And even 75% is enough to find this Mexican telenovela fsr more entertaining than the “reality” TV shows on almost every network. Also, Mexican telenovelas have old-fashioned values, which I find very appealing.
This says more about ABC, NBC, and CBS than it does about Univision. I agree with the previous comments that Univision has a monopoly when it comes to Spainish networks in America, and the stats are misleading.
UNIVISION has the potential of becoming an instrument for education and social change. It’s audience would benefit from programming that helps assimilate into the American culture. UNIVISION would also gain by reaching out to the American market by introducing more cultural diversity. Their news broadcast is as biased as biased can be. In many ways they are contributing to the great divide between most of their viewers and the rest of the Country.

Would there be any correlation to the 3 weeks being big holiday weeks here in the US and the English speaking population away from the TV celebrating the holiday/vacation, and the large Spanish speaking population not celebrating?
Not true. Nielsen is obsessive about getting the right sampling of households, and they number in the tend of thousands now. Moreover, the story reports on averages — a much more stable measure than for individual telecasts.
the news is so much better there although Jorge Ramos is a flaming lib too. Telenovelas are great, they are helping me to remember my spanish, a wonderful language!
