UPDATE, 5:59 AM: DirecTV says that it doesn’t want to drop the Viacom channels but the company “sent a letter to us late last night,
forcing us to take these channels down by midnight tonight if we don’t come to an agreement….They are using this tactic to try and leverage over a 30% increase (that’s an additional one billion dollars) from our customers for the exact same Viacom channels they receive today.” As for Viacom’s claim that 26 channels are at stake — that’s only correct if you count the SD and HD feeds of a channel separately. The deal involves 17 unique services.
PREVIOUS, 4:17 AM: This would be a huge disruption for both companies. But Viacom says in a blog post that DirecTV’s 20M subscribers could lose its 26 channels — including Nickelodeon, MTV, and Comedy Central — at midnight tonight unless there’s more progress in their talks for a new carriage deal. DirecTV says that Viacom wants a 30% boost in the payments it receives, and the satellite company is “working to keep your bill low.” But the programmer says that “our negotiations have reached an impasse” after DirecTV made a counter-proposal to Viacom “that included a lower rate than Viacom receives from any other distributor in the industry.” It adds: “Our agreement with DirecTV is seven years old – ancient by the standards of the ever-evolving media industry – which means that DirecTV has enjoyed way below market rates for Viacom’s networks for a very long time.” Viacom says that it’s the most watched programmer on DirecTV, accounting for 20% of all its viewing, but only receives 5% of its programming payments. Last month Bernstein Research’s Todd Juenger dropped his price target for the media giant saying that with the steep ratings declines at Nickelodeon and MTV, “it is no longer inconceivable that a distributor would drop Viacom, or at least engage in a public battle with them over price increases.”

This is why people just pirate shows. They’re tired with their cable/satelite bill constantly going up and dealing with threats from carriage disputes.
It takes only a couple of minutes to download a show (legally or otherwise). The networks and the carriers should be finding better ways to keep their customers by offering lower rates than constantly asking for more money, even though the ratings are steadily going down.
The only network that really can ask for more is ESPN (Disney). Sports is only good live, therefore is pirate and DVR proof. Also, their ratings are still strong.
MTV, VH1, Nick, etc. are seeing their ratings go down. Why should DirecTV pay more for less viewers??
Dtv is making the $$$! If I lose all these channels I’m leaving! A lot of my family members feel the same way. The survey at directvpromise.com is bogus as well. They tell you that can on check 5 of the Viacom channels that you like! My kids & I watch most of Viacom channels on a regular basis. Dtv is not being honest with us. There are only 6 comments in their feed. They are not posting our true reactions to this matter. They are also saying that we’re only losing 17 channels! It’s 26 right? Plus, I like to watch tv on a television; not the internet. Dtv will have too much control if we have to watch our favorite shows on the internet. I WON’T LET DIRECTV CONTROL WHAT I WATCH & HOW I WATCH IT!
Preach on!! I agree!!
Mark Twain said that history doesn’t really repeat itself but it does rhyme a lot. This is nearly identical to the same beginnings that led to the 1948 end of “block booking”, except the victims are clearly the viewing public this time. Instead of the independent theater owners, it’s the viewing public that’s being stuck with the “bill.” To Viacomm and their ilk: Gentlemen, fix this or Congress will surely fix it for you. Independent theater owners hath no fury like a p*ssed off, TV-watching public. This time the fix won’t be a consent decree with the DOJ but *STATUTORY*, i.e. the requirement of al a carte programming as law.
I don’t watch alot of these chanels. I work the late shift and only paid programing is on when I get home. I dislike them about as much as I like going o the dentist. I watch about five hours of T.V. per week. I pay alot for that amount. Books are looking alot better all the time. Spike is about all I watch. I can’t stand watching sports chanels. I would rather play the sport than watch it on T.V. Maybe I need to think about going back to the bunny ear’s. That was free.
well some people LIKE and APPRECIATE these netwoks and want them BACK. we love them, even if 3/100 dont.
I am a DirecTV customer for over 5 years. Theyve been great… better than comcast. I am though strongly considering becoming a cable cutter and save $110 month. For what I watch anymore I am better off just keeping my netflix streaming and go with an amazon prime or hulu subscription. Oh, and a silicondust homerunHD tuner to boot!
The bad part is… wifey wont let me spend some money to build the HTPC.
Viacom is turning this on Directv. My daughter watches I-Carly and Victorious. Its awful to panic young children and older children who enjoy their shows. Personally Viacom is being greedy. I have had Directv for a long time. Its a shame that this has to happen.
Agreed it was very shady on viacoms part to post the drop add on a childrens channel.
We dropped Sirius/XM two months ago when they raised their prices once again.
We have no entertainment but DirecTV and our Audible subscription. I’m NOT giving up Audible.
It’s a great (hours-of-entertainment/price) value. Plus, it’s portable.
If things get any worse in the economy, we’ll start discussing trimming our DTV package. Too bad.
30%?!? Video packages are too costly already. I’m pretty sure that if each DirecTV customer was given a choice of either a 30% rate increase, or no Viacom channels, that nearly all of them would choose the no Viacom channels.
So Dish lost a few channels, 3 or 4 at most with the AMC take down. And DirecTv is about to lose 26 MAJOR channels. The answer is clear! DirecTV needs to get their heads out of where the sun don’t shine and pay up or they will lose quality programming!
WHAT!? GROW UP! What is this accomplishing?! dropping all of the most popular channels is gonna create HATERS and SPAM EMAILS and NOBODY WILL BUY FROM VIACOM OR DIRECTV! What the heck! I,and probably trillions of other innocent kids and teenagers DEMAND NICK, MTV, AND ALL OF THE OTHERS FOR LESS OR NOBODY WILL NOT EVER BUY FROM THEM!! ITS JUST UNFAIR!!!! Give us some slack! We arent made of money and we cant pay $1 billion more for 25 channels!!
GROW UP! fighing like this will not accomplish anything! take my (and trillions of other innocent kids’s) advice, Viacom, and let us have our channels back for less than 30%… maybe 20%? 15%/ 25%? 29.9%????
this makes my daughters so mad. They’re so upset they can’t watch Winx Club on Nick anymore. Viacom and Directv really need to work this out.
I think its Ridiculous regardless, I mean both companies are blamming each other “its on my TV screen” Direct Tv has their verison then Viacom has theirs. Really?!! Im so mad I just switched from Dish Network because of them dropping channels to now Direct TV or Viacom wanting to drop 25 plus channels. I do know this they wanna play games then ok you can drop everyones bill down including mine or I can just go with my local Cable company really dont want to but its either or keep the channels or drop the monthly billing down OR be grown-ups and settle this stupid crap. And to the person who put Jersey Shore and Spongebob lol you must work for Viacom or something… obvisly you think its okay for them to crook everyone huh? Its veiwers choice and do you want your choices taken away?
Remember when it was free to watch TV? Ah, the good ol’ days. Not willing to pay more as we already pay too much as it is in my opinion. Greedy corporations on BOTH sides. Isn’t the revenue from advertisers (50% programming:50% advertising) already filling your pockets enough? Where is the value added to the consumer exactly? I am confused.Sigh……
What difference does it make if Viacom leaves or not. Every channel you have is nothing but reruns and comericals. Direct tv
dosent seem to care. If it wasn’t for the Football channels I
would go to cable where there are better programming and cheaper
monthly bills
Seriously, what’s a 30% increase across the board??? A few cents, a few dollars?? Our bills aren’t going up that freaking much…having said that..greedy jerks need to just let us enjoy our entertainment. If they drop nick, nick jr and MTV, that’s unacceptable and I will have to switch.
All this bull about wanting to raise the price for Viacom is not even funny. If DIRECTV doesn’t agree to the extra they want Viacom will lose more money then they would have made to go with a offer from DIRECTV. All everybody is trying to do is get more money from the poor f___ing people so Viacom can get richer.
Viacom? we can live without them. Love some of their programming, but we don’t need that kind of corporate black mail. Tell them to go to HELL or get real.
Pissed Off with Viacom in Hawaii -
Here is a compromise. We pay around $50 more a month to keep viacom, and viacom gives up all advertising rights so we do not pay to watch commercials anymore. Damm wonder how much money they would lose?
Screw Viacom, their channels are worthless. MTV died in the 90′s, comedy central has only south park, which is barely watched. I wouldn’t give them 1 extra penny, they are the ones who are going to lose this battle.
I think Viacom SUCKS for doing this, WE give up vacations and substitute hamburger for steak, macroni for potatoes to save money and the one thing we do splurge on is DTV and now you want more money WTH , We pay alot of money to have the programming we have and it’s BS that you wanna take it off the air unless we cough of more money. You think you aren’t replaceable? Think again, We the consumers are very aware of where every penny we have goes and we don’t Have a millions of dollars to just blow on frivilous things the way you do, You might want to rethink your plan because we have been doing without alot of things we would like to have and you will lose lots of business because you are just another thing we will learn to live without because we can’t afford a bill increase.
Viacom channels are very 1980′s. If they’re not going for shock value, they go for the 7th grade mentality, bad comedy, and reruns.
It will be a blessing for broadcasting for Viacom to dry up and blow away in the wind.
DTV has Sunday Ticket. The NFL trumps Viacom any day. If I lose the Viacom channels, so be it.
Stay strong Directv, these channels are useless as far as I’m concerned.
Does anybody remember the Antenna? Done with the greed and bs.
Well if all my kids channels get dropped then I guess it is time to cancel cable, time to start reading more because I’m not paying for cable if there isn’t anything for my kids to watch!
