It was a good morning for Good Morning America on Friday. The ABC show beat out rival Today in the ratings, one day after Today’s Ann Curry tearfully exited the show after over a year as co-host and 14 years on the morning show. Scoring its best numbers of the week, GMA pulled in 398,000 more viewers overall than Today on June 29. Because Curry was already scheduled to be off Friday, the end of the week was Today’s first day with new co-host Savannah Guthrie; Guthrie officially joins Matt Lauer and the rest of the Today team July 9. Today had the upper hand in the 25-54 demo by 97,000 viewers, but among women 25-54 it was GMA that took the lead by 4,000.

Ms. Curry was better as a news person and shouldn’t have ever been moved to co-host. But the behavior of NBC is going to come back to haunt them. That said, I miss the days when people came on shows because they were interesting, not because they had something to promote.
The handful of times that I tuned to Today while Viera was there, I was horrified at how bad I thought she was as morning co-anchor. She was bad at soft interviews, hard news, & trying to relate to Matt & Al. Zeroes across the board I thought,
Obviously, Ann-bot is actually a worse choice as everything she does is manipulated & forced. She’s so transparently bad, it’s like you see her go thru her own motions like this is where I whisper to seem sympathetic, this is where I smile to appear like I get the joke …
NBC did f*** up the way they handled this, & although I liked Savannah in little bits on Morning Joe, I can’t stand her “Star Jones cause I’m a lawyer” bit on nightly news, she is clearly not the answer either.
But, the real reason I stopped watching Today & GMA for the most part years ago is because they all act like the world is going to end if they don’t finish every segment in 1 min 30 secs. And just how rude they were to the guests – they spent more time on those coming up preview shots than they did actually talking to the guests. Or they give 20 min for back to school fashion show for 10 yr olds & then 1 min for some poor fool who just wrote a book on healthcare/education/wall street/foreign policy & just brush them off with sorry we’re out of time. So pathetic what stories they value to tell. So pathetic that for the most part it still works.

People who are bemoaning a lack of substance on Today and GMA should check out CBS. Of course, they do have Gayle King, but at least they got rid of Harry Smith.
Want to topple the empire? We the People have the power. NBC is nothing without its viewers. No viewers means no advertisers, no advertisers means no show!!! Let’s make history today people. This will be one that will go down in the books and will always be remembered for the debacle that white men in business suits who were solely interested in the mighty green lost it all by their total disregard to human compassion, decency and their ignorance to the word ‘loyalty’. VOTE with your remote people!!! Take a stand to the injustice that was served to Ann Curry. Do NOT waiver as that’s what the NBC Exec’s are hoping as they try to tempt and tease us with the Olympics hoping all will be forgotten and they will never have to face up to their egregious actions against an seasoned veteran to the show and against us, THE PEOPLE, who ultimately help them rake in the ‘green’. Say NO!! Say we won’t stand for it!! Vote with your remote!! Boycott NBC, unlike their page, write their sponsors!!! Stand uniform people!!! This will not be swept under the carpet, our voices will be heard. We are outraged and simply disgusted by the Exec’s at NBC!!! Make them pay, make them learn. Let’s hit them where it hurts the most- THEIR WALLETS!!! We the people have the power. We control who gets the advertising revenue by the shows WE watch. We can topple the empire!! And we will go down in history for doing so. Do NOT mess with the viewers who are responsible for your paycheck. And you can watch the Olympics online so NBC is not the only game in town. Ann was not perfect but she did not deserve the way NBC treated her. It was horrible and classless. I hope she laughs all the way to bank. By the way I do not like, have never liked, Matt Lauer it was the women that pulled him up. I have watched that show since I was in grammer school NO MORE! I will have to get used to GMA but oh well.
After Anne’s last day, I have sworn off the Today show. I was a loyal viewer every morning for 30 years. I knew that the quality of the programming was on the decline, but appreciated the professionalism that Ann Curry gave to the show. Now, after reading the scuttlebutt, I find that Matt Lauer wanted Ann out and thought she didn’t have good chemistry with him. What’s that about? Matt made a big mistake with how he handled things. Has anyone looked at the fact that the ratings decline may be the fault of Matt and the programming targeted to airheads? The viewers are just plain offended by what happened last week and insulted that they are given such crap that passes for news. What censorship trickery is going on here? With the sleight of hand watch this cooking show, now see this girl who can’t stop hiccupping, then move to a cooking show with Paula Deen. Real news receives about 10% coverage. Well guess what! NBC’s treatment of Ann and the non-hug with Matt ended up being news. Good job NBC and Matt for making some news! Too bad I won’t be watching Today Show anymore ever again (until Matt leaves too) to see you guys make more news. Not even for boring Olympics.
I have decided to turn off Today and watch CBS…I think Today has just lost its edge. I think Ann Curry is an amazing newsperson. I think the morning stuff was a little beneath her, but the way she was treated. Seems like NBC just does not learn

Today Show since Bryant Gumble was on and will now be tuning into GMA. I am so disappointed that you have given this amazing woman up for what you think will be better ratings. For Al’s sake, I hope he will still have a career, but I could care less if the rest of the show crashes and burns. Good luck Ann and we will tune in to whatever you choose to do. Hold your head high and keep on with what you do best: bringing us quality broadcasting, being sincere, and not dumbing it down! We love you!
NBC you are the bottom of the barrel, and GMA will be happy to clean up your viewer problem.
Who knows, maybe Ann will be back as the co-host. NBC screwed up when they tried to replace Jay Leno with Conan, but they eventually fixed that. You would think someone would fire the idiot that keeps making these bonehead decisions.
The Today show will continue to lose ratings and watch for big losses in July. That is quite a prediction to make considering I am expressing that my prediction will basically occur now. Today is a terrible show now. Really awful. Gunthrie and Lauer, enough said. GMA will blow the Today Show away in ratings which equals more profits for ABC shareholders which is the bottom line. This is mainly attributable to one Amy Robach which most of my fellow ratings watchers have failed to grasp. Let’s hope this factor isn’t lost on execs at GMA/ABC.
I only watched because of Ann and now that she is gone I will be too. Al is the only good thing today has left. As for Matt he needs to go and savannah doesn’t stand a chance, she will be fired in a year.
i am like so many and will not watch the today show again. i used to really like matt lauer, but after hearing what he did, or rather didn’t do for ann curry, i think they should axe him. he’s not as special as he seems to think. ann is genuine and caring in everything she does. i wish her the very best and know she will be truly blessed in whatever she chooses to do.
I have watched the Today show religiously (no understatement) since 1994 but in the last 6 months Ive truly lost interest. Why u ask? Well, while Anne Curry was never the right fit – me like, many others wanted her to succeed, but it was obvious that it was less about her failing than her being in the right role. To lay Today’s impending slide off a cliff on her is wrong. The issue(s) – Matt Lauer (in recent years he’s just turned into a glib, phoning it in anchor who is in it for the money – Natalie Morales (a total ice queen – she lives a block away from me and everyone in the hood makes fun of her snobiness as well as her sham marriage to her dorky husband who casually wears soccer uniforms around town thinking hes still a teenage soccer phenom – hes an idiot and doesnt seem to ever work or have a job) – Al (we love him but hes becoming a total joke lately which is ashame). The news segments are lame – the entertainment segments are over the top and almost its as if ur watching E-News. The show has become superficial and shallow. My god – no one talks about the first three hours of Today and Hoda and Kathie Lee are now the most interesting ( a guilty pleasure that dont try to be hard news pretentious). Steve Capus take my word for it – drop Matt & Natalie, keep all and find some really intriguing smart personalities to replace chrome dome and the ice queen. Savanahis a good start but Matt will want her gone in six mos cause she’ll make him look old and dull and hell want her gone. Natalie is just potential wasted and ship her to Telemundo. She cant even host Miss universe right – Giulianna rules!!! Meredith was a breath of fresh air in a dying show after Katie but what no one realizes is the formula is stale and all to feed their enetertainment properties and Matt is not the soul of the show. Anne was never a perfect fit but to blame her is absolutely unfair and wrong. At least we know who she is on and on off the air are the same person unlike her smiling fake cohorts. Prove em wrong Anne!!!
When I visited the Today Show last summer, Ann and Natalie would stay out in the Plaza engaging in conversations with “fans.” Matt spent no time visiting with the crowd even though he appeared to be in no hurry. After visiting, Ann would run back in for live segments. Matt had no real interest in the crowd (nor did Lester). I believe Ann was a genuinely warm and caring person who was mistreated by the network.
Always enjoyed Ann’s interviews, not impressed with Matt. Pretty boy now a old bald man who thinks he is still the cat’s meow.
The day they did this, I said this is the last day for me. I know I have watched the Today Show everyday for over 20-30, it was my routine. Not anymore.
I hope Ann gets a terrific new job and all her fans will be cheering her on.
p.s. haven’t missed it at all.
NBC makes a tacky tabloid show with an aging lothario bore and they throw Curry in the vocano? The show is failing because the show stinks. Octomom, murders on cruise ships, selling schlock, etc. It’s just a bad show. CBS, what a breath of fresh air they are!
Always watched the Today show, even thou the network is soooooo liberal but I have had it with Lauer’s arrogance!!!!! The public humiliation of Ann Curry was the final straw. I have switched to GMA as Lauer’s voice is like nails on a chalk board to me now. GMA maybe more silly than informative but at least they aren’t mean to each other. Good luck Al…..as I am sure Lauer has a “pecking order” as the ratings will continue to drop!!!
Savanna Guttery is so Hard to watch, worse to listen to. She’s already broken up one woman’s home! Unappealing in every way! Huge mistake for NBC; swayback old lady trying to sound like a tween.

Loved her in morning/nightly news and dateline. She is the very best!! Some of the others Matt, Katie, Merideth not so impressive in my opinion. What is nbc thinking?? They do not always know best. I plan to watch other networks. Can take the silly

The reason that everyone in my family stopped watching the Today Show quite some time is Matt Lauer. We all love Ann Curry. Too bad Matt wasn’t dumped and Ann put in his place. The ratings would soar. With the present lineup, CBS and ABC will continue to out-perform the Today Show.
I was a today show junkie, I watched everyday for 30 years, it was such a sad day when I heard rumors that Ann curry was leaving and than the bomb shell, she was saying goodbye. Matt Lauer should be the one saying goodbye. Well, that was the day I said goodbye, Ann Curry you have a loyal fan here, unfornately I will never watch the today show again. NBC you messed up big time on this decision. Maybe Savannah get get them legal consul to get ride of the bigbwigs,.
Savannah is a HORRIBLE interviewer she has no heart or passion like Ann did…I can’t stomach her or the show anymore…the day Ann left I started watching GMA and I love it they are real and they have the heart that is lacking at the Today show!
