EXCLUSIVE: Wild West Picture Show Productions has used its discretionary fund to acquire the Ridley Pearson novel The Risk Agent. It will be developed as a star vehicle for Vince Vaughn, who’ll produce with his Wild West cohorts Victoria Vaughn and Sandra J. Smith. They’ve already set Michael Lerner to write the script. The book was published last month by Putnam.
The project will be developed for Universal, where Vaughn has his producing deal. It’s a departure for the actor, a thriller that is set in China. When a Chinese National working for an American-owned construction company is grabbed off the streets of Shanghai in broad daylight and his one-man security detail goes missing as well, the call goes out to Rutherford Risk. That firm specializes in hostage extraction, from negotiation to recovery. Since private investigation is illegal in China, the company recruits two experts. One, Grace Chu, is a female forensic accountant who follows the money; the other, John Knox, is well trained in both combat and culture. They overcome their differing styles to try and get the hostages back before it’s too late.
CAA brought the book to Wild West and made the deal, while Lerner is repped by ICM and Anonymous Content. Lerner scripted Game Theory for Summit, with Niels Arden Oplev attached to direct and Wheeler Dealers for Paramount.

sounds suspiciously like a 21st century Rising Sun. and i like VV, but this genre switch could go the way of jim carrey going thriller for #23.
Well, he did do some dramatic work earlier in his career with decent success (The Locusts, Return to Paradise, Clay Pigeons, The Cell, etc.). He’s charismatic with a strong cinematic presence, so it’d be nice to see him stretch a bit and play someone other than himself.
If this kind of story is a direction Vince Vaughn is developing, it is too bad he could not or did not seek the rights to the Jonathan Grave books written by John Gilstrap.
Grave is a great role doing hostage rescues, and he is surrounded by a solid cast of equally interesting and well developed characters
Michael Lerner is a terrific writer. Good to see Vince stretching himself again. He was truly incredible in RETURN TO PARADISE. This sounds like it could be a really interesting film.
One of my favorite Vince Vaughn movies is A COOL DRY PLACE. He’s funny and all, but I think he’s a fantastic dramatic actor too. Hope this comes together well.
His characer’s name should be Rutherford Risk it’s classy and unique.
It’s not a departure, but more of a return.
Go Ridley Pearson (the author of the book this is based off of)
Ridley Pearson is one of the best suspense writers working today. His novels are well written, well researched and always original. They are totally absorbing. VV made a great decision to base a movie on his work. I wish Hollywood had picked up more of his books.
