Abby Elliott’s four-year stint on Saturday Night Live is ending. She says she won’t continue on NBC’s late-night sketch comedy series this fall. Elliott, the first second-generation SNL cast member, tested the sitcom waters in March when she was cast as the female lead in Fox’s comedy pilot Ben & Kate aka Ned Fox Is My Manny. The actress, daughter of SNL alum Chris Elliott, left the pilot after the table read and was replaced by Dakota Johnson. She returned to SNL for the remainder of the season, while Ben & Kate went to series. Elliott’s memorable impersonations on SNL included Angelina Jolie, Anna Faris, Rachel Maddow, Khloe Kardashian, Zooey Deschanel and Brittany Murphy. Of the three SNL veterans whose contracts were up in May, Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg have already announced that they won’t return, while Jason Sudeikis recently hinted that he may leave too but claimed that he was still undecided.

Seems kinda dumb. She could’ve really broke out with the departure of Wiig and become more of a household name.
With Kristen leaving, Abby was positioned to be the Alpha Female. I guess now Nasim Pedrad and Vanessa Bayer can fight over it.

Abby Elliot got fired from a sitcom after a table read. Where does she think she’s going?
Aside from Seth and Keenan T. who else is left that’s well known? I don’t watch the show anymore since — aside from during the presidential season — it jumped the shark in 2000. It seems like all that’s left are mediocre wannabe comedians.
Why would she leave now? It’s her time to shine now that Wiig is gone.

It seemed like she never really got a chance to do much on the show anyway. Good looking and funny though. She will probably do well for herself.
Not in the biz, but isn’t it strange that she’s departing just weeks before the new season is to go into production? Don’t programs usually have their talent signed in the late spring, right around the time of upfronts?

She and Kate McKinnon are a bit similar…maybe she saw the writing on the wall. Loved her Zooey.

Wasn’t their talk of her being let go after last season? Furthermore, didn’t she have a break up with SNL mainstay Fred Armisen? Something tells me this was not her decision.
Too bad, though. I think she is really funny and quite talented.

Did some funny stuff but never quite made a demonstrable impression. I don’t think it was her format. Perfect for certain types of sitcoms though, and beautiful. She’ll do just fine.
This idea that with Wiig gone the other women will have a chance to shine is ridiculous. Yes, Wiig was the centerpiece of the female cast members (for good reason), but the other women certainly had a chance to do something and absolutely none of them did. Michaels would be well advised to can all of them and start over.

I always thought Michaela Watkins got fired from SNL because she upset the master plan to make Kristen Wiig happen, i.e. be too funny.
I agree. Kate definitely excited me in her few bits last year. I think she’s really going be a good fit. Nasim (Kim K.), Vanessa (Miley), & Abby (Britney) all had funny character bits but just never seemed to be able to pull off any other skit.
