EXCLUSIVE: Matt Gross executive produces ABC/ABC Studios’ drama procedural Body Of Proof, which centers on a neurosurgeon-turned-medical examiner. Now Gross is behind a new hourlong project for ABC and ABC Studios that revolves around neurosurgeons. Titled Burns & Cooley, the medical procedural centers on the top two neurosurgeons at a New York hospital who find themselves competing on every level—both personally and professionally—as they handle some of the toughest medical cases in the world involving the brain. The problem? The bitter rivals are ridiculously attracted to one another. Meredith Philpott (Awkward) is writing the script for ABC Studios and Gross Entertainment, whose VP Lindsay Goffman brought in the project. Gross executive produces. Philpott is with APA and Heroes and Villains; Gross is with attorney Karl Austin.

ZZZZZZzzzzzz. A real dud! Talk about a project that will never see air!
Really? Is that the WHOLE idea? Rivals who are attracted to each other? There’s got to be more to it, right?
Yuck. And I don’t mean the writer or the idea…
What?! They’re attracted to each other?! I didn’t see that coming.
Does it strike anyone that ABC seems to be in a rut now where all their shows have to have a Castle-like angsty romance at the center of it? First they completely rejigger Body of Proof to give Delany a sparring partner/love interest/co-lead. Now this which, oddly, sounds a lot like David E. Kelley’s new show on TNT… except instead of an ensemble, its centered on sparring partners/possible lovers. Whaaaat’s going on?
Congrats to Meredith – she’s a terrific writer. Looking forward to seeing this on the air.
Sounds like it has the potential to be sexy and smart. Too bad shows about sexy doctors never seem to do well….
This twist on MOONLIGHTING has me flashing back to the 80s! And not in a good way. There has GOT to be writers out there with unique, fresh, interesting ideas… come on network execs, get with it!
Hire a nobody, buy their pitch, take a shot, film their pilot… nobodies only get paid scale. It’ll save you money in the long run.
Is my idea far too simplistic?
Get a grip everyone. It’s TV! This sounds fun.
Wow. ANOTHER medical drama on TV. Why? Because doctors and lawyers and cops are the ONLY interesting jobs in the world. Memo to Hollywood suits: maybe you buy those shows because in real life, all three of those professions have a history of corruption. Just like you.
Good to see Gross has finally found his niche… Cliche drivel.
This is not the guy you wanna be in a room with.
I doubt it’s meant to be some incredibly novel idea. I think we all know that the best shows – the most successful ones – are well-executed version of these kinds of shows. Anyone who doesn’t understand that probably doesn’t work that much.
Spoken like a true #2.
Maybe the lead characters are male or maybe they are both female. Maybe one is African American and the other Asian American.
“Hey, Doctor, my brain is broken, can you help me?”
“Yes, but first I have to see who my brain doctor rival that I’m really attracted to is talking with, then I can worry about your little problem… Oh, god, do you think she’s as cute as me… Hello… Sir, can you hear me? Dammit, now I have to do something amazingly smart and heroic to save you… Let’s get you right into surgery — Oh, wait, did anybody see who my incredibly handsome brain doctor rival just left with… Aaahhhh!”
I was reading the premise and groaning, preparing to say “3 lbs. was better,” all the while thinking it was about two male neurosurgeons. Then I get to the part where they’re attracted to each other. Unless it is, in fact, two men or two women being attracted to each other (wonder when we’ll see that for main characters on ABC, hah), I’m ready to chuck this one out the window without ever having seen it. I mean, come on, I can see the entire show now… blah blah blah, medical speak, blah blah blah, sexual attraction, fifty shades of Grey’s Anatomy, etc. I’m bored already.
I’ve read a couple of meredith’s scripts over the years and think she’s an incredible writer. Good for her.
This may actually be great with Philpott writing. She’s finally arrived. Have read her work… She’s funny and smart. A unique voice. I think we’ll see more of her
