EXCLUSIVE: ABC has put in development Between Park & Lex, a dramedy written by Maria Maggenti (Monte Carlo) and produced by ABC Studios and Ryan Reynolds and Allan Loeb’s DarkFire TV.
As the title suggests, the hourlong dramedy is set in New York City. It centers on a mother and daughter who team up as amateur sleuths. Highlighting the complex dynamic and humor of a mother/daughter relationship, they balance their day jobs and regular lives with solving crimes on the side. Maggenti, Reynolds and Loeb executive produce with DarkFire’s two other principals, Jonathon Komack Martin and Steven Pearl. The project falls outside of Dark TV’s first-look deal at 20th Century Fox TV. Under that deal, the CAA-repped company recently set up two comedy projects at Fox: a live-action half-hour from writers Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay and an animated show from writers Mark Torgove & Paul Kaplan and Ash Brannon. Maggenti, repped by Paradigm and Madhouse Entertainment, co-wrote the upcoming Dirty Dancing feature reboot. Her TV credits include 90210 and Without A Trace.

Please tell me that the characters are named Park. And Lex. Cuz that would be awesome.
I love the sound of this!
ABC EXEC: Ryan this is a great idea. No one has never thought of unusual coupled solving crimes. We’ll buy it. Okay now put your shirt back on.
Sounds like “Gilmore Girls” meets “Thelma & Louise” meets “Sex & the City” meets “Murder, She Wrote”.. Yay?
Yep, very unoriginal. They should develop a medical/hospital/detective/CIA/FBI/forensic series instead. There are so few of those!
What a shame! One of the finest cozy mother & daughter sleuths was written by the late Nora DeLoach – the Mama and Simone mysteries. In fact there are so many wonderful little book series that would make for a great TV series – an untapped gold mine.
OMG.
Cannot believe someone else thought of DeLoach’s “Mama” books. And a pair of funny, smart, squabbling African-American mother/daughter detectives should be a lock for a pilot if the people who are always griping about “not enough diversity” are not just giving lip service.
Sounds like a complete rip-off of a Canadian Broadcasting Corp. hit show “Republic of Doyle”, featuring a father/son PI duo.
20th walked away from this gem? shocking….
Def a rip off of the great Canadian Show Republic of Doyle. Tho it will be missing one key ingredient…Allan Hawco. Looks like American tv is at it again, stealing Canadian tv show ideas. First they tried to do a rip off of Rookie Blue, now this!
Love it. Go team Dark Fire!
Go Maria!!
Very happy for you my love. Is there a part in there for a South Londoner who misses his pal!?
Congrats!
Mirren
shockingly brilliant idea!! and btw– not a rip off of any Canadian anything. It’s 100% original.
ABC knew what it was doing to scoop this up.
Maggenti is one of the most original and skilled writers out there. About time she got her own show.
I am maria maggenti and I’ve never heard of the Canadian show you mention or the book series but both sound great and I look forward to checking them out. This series is based on me and my mom and the What If? we had to solve crimes together….That’s it. I guess it’s not original insofar as nothing is original. Thanks for the snarks and the support and Simon, darling, there’s always a place for you at my table!
Maria, I think this sounds very funny! Mother/daughter is so ripe with comedy..at least mine is! Cute pic also
