EXCLUSIVE: It is clear from the record cable rating and 22 Emmy noms for the History Channel miniseries Hatfields & McCoys that audiences want to see more of Kevin Costner, who starred as clan leader Devil Hatfield. Studios have certainly noticed, and Costner is being courted for a pair of big roles that could bring on a resurgence I think is overdue.
Costner, who plays Pa Kent in the Warner Bros/Legendary Superman reboot Man of Steel, has been offered the co-lead of the Kenneth Branagh-directed Jack Ryan film that will star Chris Pine. Costner’s also being courted by Luc Besson’s Europacorp to star as a dying assassin in Three Days To Kill.
I’ve heard that the Jack Ryan role is a new creation, but a close cousin to the role of CIA bigwig Admiral Greer that was played by James Earl Jones in Patriot Games. Costner’s role is being invented because Jones will likely be in the prequel, but essentially Costner would play Ryan’s mentor who recruits him and shows him the ropes.

Three Days to Kill has a script by Adi Hasak and Besson, and like Taken, it is a contained cost drama that is set in France and is a kicking showcase for a male star. Costner has been offered the role of Ethan Renner, a government assassin who is dying. Before he goes, he is determined to reconcile with his daughter, while taking on one final mission. Talk about a ticking clock. Besson and Europacorp are producing. I’m hearing that McG is circling the project as director, with Relativity Media aboard to distribute in North America.
All Costner has to do is step up and do both. By the way, he had been mentioned in reports as being locked to star in the Niki Caro-directed McFarland, but I’ve heard that he won’t be in the movie. WME and One Talent rep Costner.

About time. Costner has weight and deserves a huge surge to be in demand again.
^^^Couldn’t agree with you more.
I’m a Kevin Costner fan, sand I want his career to soar so don’t get me wrong … but how did the studios get SO FUCKING STUPID. The interest was in the FEUD not the actor. Kevin is a great actor (and person) and killed in the role and the material was great and well done … that’s why the people watched. But what lesson do the studios take? UM, I guess the people want to see more Kevin Costner …
Agreed, plus the fact that the miniseries format has virtually disappeared from US broadcast and basic cable networks. While I haven’t seen Hatfields & McCoys yet and wouldn’t dispute that Kevin Costner was a draw to some extent, I suspect that the show’s ratings success had more to do with audiences clamouring for a good ‘old fashioned’ story – with a guaranteed ending – in a unique (at least nowadays) historic setting. The fact that it’s based on a notorious real life event with human/family drama and conflict at its core is a definite plus. As entertaining as many of them are, there are only so many modern criminal/medical/legal procedurals people can have shoved down their throats at one time before they start seeking an alternative.
I thought the trailer summed it up pretty well.
Costner runs through the forest and yells “Hatfield!” (Bang). Then Bill Pullman runs through the forest and yells “McCoy!” (Bang)
I thought, well there you go…
Kevin Costner was a big draw, but I agree there was a sort of pent-up demand for a big retelling of the Hatfield-McCoy feud. For decades the feud has been part of the cultural lexicon, but nobody really knows anything about it. So people are curious. And if you check Wikipedia pages on the subject, it really does seem like Hollywood has never really attempted a large-scale epic about it, 70s TV movies notwithstanding.
I maybe alone but I actually did watch Hatfields to see Kevin Costner not because of the story I already know. I wanted to see an excellent actor I like to watch. The story didn’t pull me in. I wasn’t watching to see something I know all about.
All the best to Kevin Costner, I hope he continues to make movies for many years.
Career resurrection by Mini-series? There’s a rarity.
PS. Good for Mr. Costner.
Dances with Wolves is a classic. Beautiful movie. Stunning score. Costner should direct again.
How about a sequel or prequel to Waterworld? lol Just kidding.
Love Costner in anything he does…he has been missed!
Costner ruled the 90s. About time he got involved with some good projects again..
Hopefully he gets behind the camera again too.
With all the hoopla over Costner and his mini-series (well-deserved, I should add), why no recognition of the superlative work by the always-overlooked, always underrated Tom Berenger? In all my years as a journalist/publicist/critic in the movie-and-TV business, I’ve never worked with a finer actor or consummate gentleman than Tom.
Berenger is a fine actor indeed, also criminally underused. So happy Nolan remembered him for Inception
They’ll tune in to watch him for free, but will they pay $13+/ticket to watch him? I’m not so sure…
I’d consider $13 a bargain-basement price to see a Costner film. He’s one of only a handful of actors that I’ll see at the theater rather than waiting for a DVD.
One more note: Is there a pattern to Costner finding finding huge success in period pieces? Some of his greatest hits — THE UNTOUCHABLES, ROBIN HOOD, DANCES WITH WOLVES, HATFIELDS & MCCOYS — have been set in the past. It was only 9 or so years ago that OPEN RANGE did respectable box office. Meanwhile, his two most notorious bombs, WATERWORLD and THE POSTMAN, were set in the future. Just a thought, not a scientific study.
Costner is underrated as an actor, I really think he has leading man looks AND acting chops. He’s brilliant in Upside of Anger
So who’s doing McFarland then? I was looking forward to seeing Costner in another sports drama.
Tim Berenger has always been a good actor. But in. Hatfield and McCoys he was outstanding Almost impossible to recognize him! Hope he is nominated for a supporting role! He deserves one!!
