Rentrak reported today that 2016: Obama’s America is benefitting from the runup to the Republican National Convention. The Rocky Mountain Pictures political documentary has generated $10.6 million since its release seven weeks ago. Now the pic is hot in four of the 12 major battleground states where GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Obama are campaigning the heaviest: Florida, Ohio, Colorado, and Virginia. Texas continues to drive revenue as well as Georgia, Illinois, and Arizona. California and New York also are listed in the Top 10 states contributing the most gross dollars to the documentary’s box office but “individual markets including Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City are part of the lowest performing areas by contrast to the norm,” Rentrak says. 2016 Obama’s America has grown +341% as it expands into more movie screens. Based on conservative author Dinesh D’Souza’s best-seller The Roots Of Obama’s Rage, it initially opened in only one theater in Houston on July 13th, then expanded to 1,091 theaters last weekend, and will increase to almost 1,800 theaters by Friday. It’s now become the #1 all-time biggest grossing conservative documentary besting Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed’s $7.7M. And the 6th all-time biggest political documentary behind liberal docs by Michael Moore and Al Gore. (Neither ranking is adjusted for inflation or higher ticket prices.) 2016 Obama’s America is co-directed by D’Souza and John Sullivan and produced by Academy Award winner Gerald R. Molen (co-producer of Schindler’s List). In fact, Molen credits “learning some lessons” from Michael Moore for the film: “When he released Fahrenheit 9/11 in 2004 ahead of the election, it sparked intense debate.” 2016 Obama’s America detractors decry it as a slick infomercial heavy with conspiracy theories. But D’Souza says he made the film to motivate moviegoers to question what an Obama second term would look like.

This is great news, indeed!!!
movie was great. btw, i usually vote democratic. everyone should see this movie.
Give credit where credit is due: most people are sick of all the negative campaigning, and tune it out on TV. Yet these folks not only created an hour and a half long negative add, they get people to pay to watch it! Brilliant. Once again, P.T. Barnum is proven right: there’s a sucker born every minute.
I’m going to start working on my negative add movie on Christie for 2016 now!
Actually, P.T. Barnum told us there’s someone who will never learn how to spell born every minute.
Rather than talk about negative adds, why don’t you talk about subtracts?
Or better yet, see the film before telling us what it is and isn’t. You know, like pass the bill so you can see what’s in it? Surely you can relate to Nancyspeak.
It’s a sad state of afairs when the media won’t (or can’t) fact check this movie. There so much about our president that we do not know. A peak into his life is a weclomed exercise. Good or bad, what do we really know about the guy? I care.
People wonder where the Romney money is going to go. Well here it is. A movie and rallying supporters to go see it. This and the OPSEC swift-boat like movie will really hurt the Obama campaign.
Actually, I believe it has already MORE than paid for itself.
Just the trailer itself is despicable… It’s filled with racist hints and devious montage. I read Dreams of my Father, it has nothing to do with taking America down – quite the contrary, it has a lot to do with the ambition of the founding fathers, some of whom fought eloquently against discriminations.
Going from producing Schindler’s list to this really is quite intriguing…
The most overused terms of the past four years: racial, racist, racism. It’s gotten to the point where nobody will be able to discern true racism when is happens.
It’s amazing.
You should see the doco before you pass judgment. I saw it yesterday in Century City and found it interesting to see how Obama’s political thoughts are motivated by the history of his father’s existence
and his mother’s embrace of anti-colonialism. The fact that Obama’s own words read by him are used to support the theories put forward, make this startling real. I voted for Obama in ’08 and bought into the hope and change. The hope is gone, and the change I’ve seen is not great. 5 trillion added to deficit. When does it all stop being Bush’s fault? When does Obama stop blaming others and take responsibility? With my nose firmly held between my thumb and index finger, I will pull the trigger for Romey. Perhaps a businessman can do more in four years, than a community organizer could.
It is still Bush’s fault. We are still and will be paying for a needless war, and lessen taxes at the same time. Do the arithmatic
You are aware the author of the book its based on is a minority himself?
The book is Dreams “from” my Father. If you really read it, I believe you would have put the correct title.
I would rather see a good film – the author was in the Bush administration – you think Prejudice?? Maybe to right the mess they left
The simple fact is that at the time of his election, the American people knew less about him than any previous presidential candidate. Now after almost 4 years as president, people are looking for answers as to who he is. We are all shaped by our family and the environment we grow up under, so it makes sense to look at these aspects of his life to understand who he is and to review his world view which shapes his decision making. Like him or not, people want to know more about him, where he came from, and his rise to the presidency. Since all of his records have been sealed, the American people are looking for information where is it available in documentaries like this one.
Was this copied from the press kit?
Did you see it? Of course not.
i agree its time we see the real obama
Please don’t call it a documentary. It’s no more a doc than anything Michael Moore put out. Call it what it really is, a propaganda piece crafted by an intelligent person who parlayed his distaste for Obama into a profit.
And yet Moore won an Oscar for best… what? Documentary. You haven’t seen the film, so your opinion as to its content is worthless.
Disagree. The Docu is very well made and should be seen.
Michael Moore documentaries are well made, but that doesn’t mean they deserve to be seen. All of this stuff is just political ads for the staunch political crowd reinforcing beliefs they already have.
I have seen this movie and it is an extremely well researched, well produced documentary. Whether you like Obama or not, Dinesh D’Souza did an outstanding job of being fair and objective in dealing with the facts. He was very careful to either steer away from or to expose both sides of controversies. If you haven’t seen it, withhold your comments.
I have not seen the movie, but based on the convention it is clear the Democrats missed an opportunity. If, when they controlled the House and Senate they had made it illegal to lie, they would not be facing a Republican candidate in this election.
Drock has it right. In 2010, Obama said that the US has “outsized influence” in world affairs, so it’s completely inarguable that American interests are not his top priority. The film just tries to explore how that came to be, because the President himself ain’t telling.
Before making judgments on the film, watch it. If Obama can write books, then someone can produce a film about him.
Everyone’s so quick to play the race card. Watch something, be open minded and then give your opinion.
If you haven’t seen it, then you’re just talking to talk.
I have better ways to waste my money
Beautifully shot. Inspiring music. This was a quality movie. Saw it at Century City. Urge all Americans to do the same. The critics are hard left ideologues.
Excellent. Some out there are too afraid fo what they just might actually learn………..and there is a great deal of information and “truth” in this film……the ending the chilling. I dare those of you who love Obama to watch it and then you have a right to make a comment………..
Took the family to see it opening night here. Day shows were near sellouts. Very well done. Excellent documentary. Some viewers will be shocked when they learn who Obama really is and just what is that dream from his father, not to mention who his father and mother and other mentors were and are.
My husband and I saw it today in the San Francisco area. Only about 20 in the theater for the 5:30pm show. It thought the film did a great job of showing the development and progression of Obama’s views. It is not racist in any way and I’m tired of that being an excuse to ignore any critics of Obama’s Presidency. It is the information most of the media have hidden or ignored.
D’Souzas contention is plausible. It would explain the moves made by his administration. If he is right, I fear for the Republic. The Dems and the media will attack the message and the messenger rather than admit they were duped and used.
I saw the film Sunday night. It expands upon something I already knew – that Obama is a man of the left. It did not convince me Obama will radically transform the country if re-elected, particularly since he would be blocked by a GOP Congress. As I do not subscribe to the liberal agenda, I will be voting for Romney as the better of two weak choices. However, I am not sure anyone can convince the American public to make the kind of changes we need to make. We have been living in a fool’s paradise for the past generation, living beyond our means.
First and foremost, there is a logical and analytic tool called “Occam’s razor.” This methods says that the explanation with the fewest steps is almost certainly right.
2016 is a movie that analyses Obama’s values and priorities. He is quoted, his books are quoted, and his father’s history is discussed at length. Obama’s policy actions as President neatly fit the analysis performed by D’Souza. To prove D’Souza wrong, a critic needs to come up with a SHORTER explanation that fits the facts better.
None of the movie haters in this set of comments has met this logical test. Therefore D’Souza’s analysis stands. Personally, as someone familiar with Occam’s Razor who went to the movie, I found it chilling — almost unnerving.
I saw the movie in Woodland Hills, CA. Not even a hint of racism against Obama in the movie. Quotes spoken in Obama’s own voice, supported most of the contentions of the film – as factual. This was an eye opening film, (for those not too fearful to see), and in no way a “hit-job”. Our current president explains in his own words that he wants to, “level the playing field”, by diminishing America and her people in all respects to be ‘fair to the rest of the world’.
In his justifiable deep-seated hatred of abusive colonial power over minorities, he fails to realize – America is the product of revolting against a colonial power.. England 1776. read about his father’s Mau Mau connection and the methods of political “change” he employed. Is this Obama’s dream for America?
I got chills watching the film, more so, fear envelops me.
I voted for Obama 4 years ago. Watching the movie just affirmed what I thought he was going to do America…. wreck this country that we love.
