Jeez, just what exhibitors and studios don’t want or need after the Aurora tragedy. A 56-year-old man whom police say has a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon accidentally shot himself in the buttocks inside the Century 14 movie theaters in downtown Sparks on Tuesday night. No one else was hurt as about 30 people were watching The Bourne Legacy. Witnesses told police the man immediately got up, apologized to those around him, and left the theater before cops arrived. He later was found seeking medical treatment at a Reno hospital. Time for metal detectors?
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

The northland theater in Michigan once had them. Lots of machines and armed guards. You felt safer and the popcorn was great.
Metal detectors would have done nothing to prevent Aurora. The guy came in the emergency exit.
Sure. Metal detectors at all movie theaters is what we need. I mean, we have them everywhere else, right? While we’re at it, lets have a bunch of TSA-like agents instead of the usual teens taking tickets and working the concession. A guy accidentally shot himself with a gun he was legally allowed to be carrying. There was no crime, other than maybe the moron leaving out of sheer embarrassment.
Well that was a smooth move. Hey everyone, sorry for shooting myself in the ass, I think I’ll just get up and leave now consdiering the vast amounts of pain I’m in. Don’t mind me. Hopefully I won’t bleed out in the lobby
Metal Detectors?? LOL! We need more people with concealed permits.
Yeah, right — we need more people with conceal permits so when a gunman goes on a rampage, these other idiots with conceal permits shoot themselves in the ass — or, worse, shoot innocent people while trying to be the hero in an action movie.
“Hey, he’s got every right to shoot himself in the ass. I wouldn’t dare to take that away from him. In fact, I wouldn’t mind if he shot himself in the ass multiple times.”
/Will McAvoy
Time for serious guns regulations?
No.
Time for people to say away from theaters altogether, wait until the DVD comes out, why risk it. that gun could have shot the person next to him instead of his ass. Just let the gun owners and the nuts have the theaters all to themselves.
Maybe Disney’s Iger will get his way of releasing films to DVD right after they are released in the theaters.
How many of those who claim to not want to go to a theatre now, because of the danger, still voluntarily get in a car. I ask, because you’ve got a far, FAR better chance of being hurt or killed driving to the grocery store than watching a movie in a theatre. I’m astounded at the overreaction of people because of one incident. The lack of common sense among so many people makes me wonder about the future of the human race.
The only thing that metal detectors and other security will do…is add even more to the cost of a ticket.
Sadly, like in Aurora, this increased security would NOT have stopped the killings. At the end of the day, only tighter controls on gun and ammunition purchases might reduce the ability for ‘crazies’ to get armed.
Of course, as long as the NRA has such huge influence on politics…nothing will happen. We can’t address the problem until serious gun controls are in place.
How many hunters need AK 47′s?
You never know when your gonna get cheated by a deer during a drug deal wearing a bullit proof vest
The right to bear arms is not for hunting. Anyone who thinks that doesn’t understand the motivation for writing the second amendment into the Bill of Rights.
Gun control won’t solve your problems. Our culture is diseased. Treating a cold won’t cure HIV and gun control won’t keep people from killing one another.
Let’s see: dark movie theater, action movie, loud soundtrack, guy with concealed carry license shoots self in ass; 2 other patrons with concealed carry licenses hear gunshot, pull their guns, shoot hole in ass to death; coming to a movie theater near you soon.
So the psychos have easy access to multiple weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition and the permit carriers are shooting themselves. You have to laugh or you’ll scream.
I like Chris Rock’s idea from several years ago – tax the ammunition. Heavily. I’d say a point of manufacture tax of say $100 per round might help. If it costs over $1000 to load your clip, you might think twice about firing them all off. Or at least your budget would limit the mayhem.
TO ALL OF YOU GUN NUTS:
If people can’t be trusted to even carry guns safely, then do you want to trust them to pull a gun and fire at a perp within close proximity to 200 people?
I’m not talking about YOU — you, of course, would be John McClane once the bullets started flying. You’d pull your 9, do a combat roll, push the hot girl out of the field of fire and take out that psycho with two in the chest and one in the head.
I’m talking about idiots like this guy who outnumber violent psychos by, oh, about one million to one.
Oh – we silly violent Americans. GET RID OF GUNS! There must be real gun control and laws. I have NEVER seen a deer at the boxoffice, sitting in my classes, at the post office, working in the cubicle next to mine or walking down in aisle in my grocery store. NEVER!
The right to bear arms isn’t for hunting.
Nikki – I applaud your New York Postian headline! Ah, it harks back to a simpler time
I hope the guy is okay, but it just points to the absolute absurdity of the lax gun laws we have today.
The age-old defense of gun nuts is “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.” That’s the problem. If you’re giving guns to every idiot and fanatic on the street you’re gonna have murder sprees and trigger happy accidents. It’s just amazing how vehemently people protect their rights to caches of firearms with no valid reason then to protect themselves from the zombie apocalypse and the Mexican druglords.
I remember the 60′s when the worst that could happen in a movie theater was someone landing on your head after they were push off the balcony. Or two star crossed lovers who would sit in the center of the theater and set off a hand grednade. Good times, good times.
Nevada, huh? Did he mistake himself for a black guy?
Pathetic.
I’m starting to think that not all people who carry concealed weapons are geniuses.
This story is getting way more attention than it deserves. Who cares? The Aurora shooting was one thing, but lets not get ourselves into a tizzy every time we hear the faintest whisper of something similar.
Why would anyone want to carry a concealed weapon into a movie theater in the first place…i simply can not understand Americans
