EXCLUSIVE: Margo Martindale has joined the cast of August: Osage County. The Emmy winner will play the jaded sister of Meryl Streep in the feature adaptation of Tracy Letts’ family clan play. Martindale’s character is Mattie Fae Aiken, the wife of Charles Aiken, played by Chris Cooper, and the sister of Violet Weston, played by Streep. The actress will start filming in Oklahoma on September 24. Martindale won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 2011 for her role on FX’s Justified. Julia Roberts also stars in August: Osage County as Violet’s daughter Barbara. Abigail Breslin, playing Barbara’s daughter, recently joined the film, as did Juliette Lewis. John Wells is directing August: Osage County, Letts is writing the adaptation of his Pulitzer and Tony-winning play. George Clooney and Grant Heslov are producing along with Jean Doumanian, Steve Traxler and Claire Rudnick Polstein. The Weinstein Co. is financing and distributing August: Osage County. Martindale is repped by the Gersh Agency.

Margo, you’ve just become a future Oscar winner. Congratulations! She’s such a great actress. Her performance in 2nd season of “Justified” still hunts me.
Hell yea — this is quickly becoming most anticipated picture for me next year
This well-deserved for Margo Martindale because she is a great actress. But, I just feel Julia Roberts is out of place for this film adaptation. Roberts has no acting range nor depth.
well deserved! Loved her in Dexter.
Wow!
I saw the play when it was on Broadway and she’s PERFECT for the part!
Nice surprise for one of our finest character actresses.
SHE IS A GENIUS… Brilliant choice..
As someone else who saw this on Broadway and loved her on “Justified,” this couldn’t be more perfect casting. She’ll be the damn thing’s secret weapon, you watch.
wow- I saw the play and loved it. This is an amazing cast. I can’t wait. finally something to look forward too
For those naysaying the casting of Julia Roberts – I understand the concern. But having recently re-watched CLOSER and CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR, I feel like she’ll be great in this role. She has matured a lot (let’s forgive her for MIRROR, MIRROR – every actor wants to make a movie his/her kids can see) as a performer and is going to really pull out all the stops for this. Juliette Lewis is interesting casting, for sure — and a big coup for her. Can’t wait for this movie.
It’d be nice for someone age appropriate to be playing Violet, though… Not knocking Meryl Streep, but there are plenty of people who could play that part without age makeup. Julia Roberts is supposed to be her daughter?!
Meryl (63) is only 2 years younger than Violet Weston (65). She has just aged very well but I dont think its a stretch at all especially since Meryl could successfully play any age.
Brilliant choice!
Inspired casting, but it would have been nice if they could’ve used some of the fine Steppenwolf Theatre actors who originated these roles – most of them have actually been in movies!
Exciting news for lovers of the GREAT play “August:Osage”. Martindale is such a wonderful actress — she’s ready for a major film role to put her at the top of the Hollywood A-list of character-actors, and this role is PERFECT for her! Yes, she has an Oscar-nom in the bag!
