Wasting no time, BBC Three has commissioned a one-hour documentary on the July 20 Aurora, Colorado shootings that took the lives of 12 people during a Dark Knight Rises screening. British production house Mentorn Media will produce The Batman Shootings. Presenter Amal Fashanu, known to UK audiences for exploring homophobia in British soccer, will speak with survivors and look at the issue of gun control in the US. Steve Anderson, who is exec producing the doc, said in a statement: “Columbine, Virginia Tech, Aurora – and even this weekend the shootings at the Sikh Temple in Milwaukee in which seven people were killed – the list of gun massacres in the USA grows ever longer. America is mainly split on the issue of gun controls – this film concentrates on what young people there think should happen now”. Mentorn’s credits include Ricky Gervais’ An Idiot Abroad for Sky and HBO documentary For Neda. The Batman Shootings will air in the UK on August 23.

Because the cash strapped BBC is going to actually be able to understand in more than a cursory way the culture of the midwest and plains.
Do a documentary on gun control, fine. You can even focus on Aurora. But cashing in on the Batman name, that’s disgusting and misstates the supposed point of the doc.
If they wanted to “cash in”, they wouldn’t be documentary film makers.
One question:::::: Has someone you loved been gunned down????
Yeah, let’s cash in on this tragedy some more.
No amount of cash will ever bring back my mom and brother!!!
The one thing Americans don’t like, having their culture exposed by outsiders. I see nothing wrong with this…besides, the BBC is what, three weeks behind NBC, CNN, FOX and every other media outlet in trying to cash in on a tragedy. At least maybe the BBC will be brave enough to say that easy access to guns played a part.
That title seems really unfair to the people involved with the movie. They should call it the “NRA Shootings.”
Since when was there more than one shooting in Aurora? Because calling it “The Batman Shootings” (ridiculous by the way) seems to suggest a string of incidents that didn’t actually happen..
Disgusting. Simply disgusting.
They are trying to cash in on this, or at the very least sensationalize it. Otherwise they wouldn’t call it ‘The Batman Shootings.’ Don’t try and spin it another way.
Josh,,,, I’ll ask you too,,,, Has anyone in your family been gunned down? I lost two, my mom and brother,,, maybe your mind is on money,, but for those of us who have experienced the PAIN!!!
Money is cheap!!!! and so is your attitude!
Why do they need to make a documentary on these shooting other than to cash in?
- The family’s do not need to be disturbed by people just trying to make a name for themselves.
- Any information people wanted on the shooting are readily available thanks to extensive news coverage.
- Both Aurora and Batman are getting a bad wrap thanks to a mad man and gun laws that need changing.
Did someone just refer to the BBC as cash strapped? The BBC 1. Just broadcast the Olympics (quite a revenue turner) 2. Receives a compulsory payment each year from every television owner in the UK. The BBC is funded in a completely different way to any other network! Being the first to broadcast a documentary about the shootings will not effect the revenue produced – Besides, The BBC is renouned world wide for their high quality, unbiased documentaries!
