The bill, AB 1660, was approved unanimously in the state Senate Appropriations Committee and now moves to the full California Senate for consideration, according to the Los Angeles Times. The measure would require criminal background checks for those who have unsupervised access to young performers, including publicists, talent managers and photographers. Registered sex offenders also would be banned from representing minors. The urge for legislative reform gained momentum following the arrest last year of a Hollywood talent manager who pleaded no contest to two counts of child molestation. Martin Weiss was sentenced in June to a year in jail and five years probation.

This is great and all, but the real people child actors need protection from are their parents. Coogan account or not it seems like 75% of the time the parents manage to plunder most of their earnings, whether its the 33% momager racket or just outright blatant spending.
Hear, hear, Claude! Have had to deal with many parents of child actors and they’re appalling. I don’t know which is worse, the momager, who’s in it to act out some unfulfilled fantasy of her own, or the dadager, who’s pimping out their kid just to make a buck. And it’s amazing how it always breaks down along those lines. Good luck to the poor kids.
Does it matter since most production is filmed out of state?
Thrilled to hear about this. There need to be more child protection laws passed re: inside the industry as well as outside.
“pleaded no contest to two counts of child molestation. Martin Weiss was sentenced in June to a year in jail and five years probation.”
One year?! For child molestation. He’s not even a priest, why so light a sentence? One f***ing year????!!!!!
All valid points. Nickelodeon has required everyone on their sets, right down to crafty and background actors, to have a thorough background & criminal check before setting foot on their sound stages around children working on the set. In many ways, it’s good idea. But in other ways, it does absolutely nothing except put more employees’ personal information in jeopardy of being stolen or misused by persons who have access to that information (ID theft by employers is now the highest percentage of ID theft nationwide). If there is to be a crackdown, I agree that it should be against everyone, including the parents who are pushing their children into the limelight to begin with, often allowing their children to be sexualized for the sake of making money. Let’s not forget that it is the parents who should be the number one persons to safeguard their children against any kind of abuse, and yet, they are often the biggest offenders. What next? Will they be asking for medical records, psychiatric records, blood samples, stool samples from anyone working around a minor in the industry? Plain and simple, children just really shouldn’t be working in the entertainment industry.
