EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures has set Billy Ray to script Sinatra, the film Martin Scorsese will direct about the life of singer-actor Frank Sinatra. The film will be produced by Scott Rudin, Mandalay’s Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman, Scorsese’s Sikelia and the iconic singer’s daughter, Tina Sinatra. It was Guber and Schulman who brought in the project to the studio after they secured life and music rights from Frank Sinatra Enterprises, which is a joint venture of the estate of Ol’ Blue Eyes and the Warner Music Group. Phil Alden Robinson had originally been hired as the writer.
I take this as a good sign that Scorsese is getting serious about bringing to life the seminal singer of the 20th Century, who parlayed that golden voice into a trip from New Jersey to Hollywood. Where he had the world on a string as he romanced the most beautiful women in town, and cut a swath with his Rat Pack pals and made films that included The Manchurian Candidate, From Here To Eternity and Pal Joey.
Scorsese is currently directing Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role in Red Granite-funded The Wolf Of Wall Street, which also stars Jonah Hill, Jon Favreau, Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin and Kyle Chandler. Scorsese hasn’t committed to his next film, and this now stands tall with several he has been developing. They include an adaptation of the Shusaku Endo novel Silence, as well as a mob film re-team with Robert De Niro in The Irishman, a Steve Zaillian-scripted adaptation of the Charles Brandt book I Heard You Paint Houses.
This comes at a prolific time for Ray. Besides The Hunger Games, Ray has scripted to direct a remake of The Secret in Their Eyes, an untitled project with J.J. Abrams, The Thin Man, the Joe Roth-produced Pan at Sony, and the recently completed Captain Phillips, the Paul Greengrass-directed Somali pirate drama for Sony Pictures that stars Tom Hanks. He’s repped by CAA and Management 360.
Now, the question still remains, who can play Frank Sinatra in the definitive biopic, as well as presumably everyone from Ava Gardner, Mia Farrow, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Marilyn Monroe and JFK?

I think Ray also worked on a screenplay for “24.”
With Marty is there any doubt that Leo will be playing Frank?
My thoughts exactly. I really think Marty needs to cast someone else as Frank but Leo is his muse or something.
For the love of bourbon please do not cast Leo as the Chairman. He is a talented guy but not for this role.
AGREED!
Please cast James Marsden! He IS this part.
I agree though he may be a little too weak to portray Frank. Leo is not a good choice for sure. I feel like someone along the lines of Matthew Morrison.
man… that sucks. Robinson’s script was one of the best i’ve ever read… bummer we’ll never see that version of it.
Link please?? I can’t find it anywhere on the web…really intrigued.
Who in this day and age could actually be Ol’ Blue Eyes? Liotta came close in “The Rat Pack.”
“For the love of bourbon” – that made my day. Thank you, “Please Not Leo”…
Let me guess: Leo as Sinatra then?
Jeremy Renner kinda looks like him. Not so sure about the charm factor.
I like the Renner suggestion. And he’s a great singer.
Ava Gardner? Liv Tyler.
Emma Stone Ava Garner and Michelle Williams as Mia Farrow
Why not the actors from the Rat Pack movie for HBO or Harry Connick Jr.
Harry Connick Jr would be absolutely perfect! He looks like Sinatra,he sounds like Sinatra! His acting chops could be honed under the direction of Scorcese. He’s a boyish 45 years young, but weight loss and makeup could ease him back to the start of Sinatra’s career and take him up through the Brat Pack and into Sinatra’s golden years.
And while Connick would probably lip synch Sinatra’s big hits out of deference to the legend, he could ad-lib everything else. Oh puh-leez, Mr. Scorcese, please consider this talented singer/actor for the role!!!
Oh yes, yes, yes. Please make this happen. Connick on his own is wonderful and could play this role brilliantly…
Depending on the time frame of Frank’s life in which they are focusing on there’s 2 things wrong with Harry Connick. 1 too old and 2 too tall. Frank was 5’8″ and Harry’s 6’1″.
FASSBENDER = OLD BLUE EYES….. end of discussion
Better James McAvoy then–at least he has blue eyes AND is the same height as Sinatra at 5’7″!
James McAvoy good choice really good, does he sing?
Fassbender? You must be joking. Leonardo Di Caprio, Jeremy Renner, James McAvoy, Al Pacino, etc.? Again, you must be joking. I would suggest James Franco. He might be annoying, but he is a good actor and is Mediterrean-looking. He would impersonate Sinatra very well. Look at the photo above. As for the rest of the actors to be cast, the real problem is not Marilyn Monroe but Ava Gardner. She was a spectacular beauty. It is going to be difficult to find someone who might even remotely resemble her.A younger Monica Bellucci would have been perfect. Note: A film on Sinatra cannot have someone else singing. It would be sacrilege. He was Francis Albert ‘The Voice’ Sinatra. I am sure Scorsese would never take such a demented decision.
I second Michael Fassbender for Sinatra. Marion Cotillard or Jessica Chastain as Ava Gardner. Scarlett Johansson as Marilyn Monroe. George Clooney as Dean Martin.
@Anonymouse: Congratulations for your sense of humour.
@Anonymouse You Should be Don Rickles….Bahaha..as far as Michael fassbender
as Sammy would say “ahhh No babe”….Frank was Italian not and Albino irishman…as long as its Not Leo Cha kaka Cha…Hatty Conick would be Good..but we all know he has that Cajun accent..which doesnt really go well with Hoboken NJ…Basically hollywood doenst have anyone that can stand up to Frank ,Deano ..Sammy…Ava …Marilyn Monroe…..Except for Clooney..Why with all the Stellar actors at 5’8 …Where are the Men?…Toby M ?..pffft..cast from Glee..(dont get me started)..I wouldnt be surprised if they put Ryan Seacrest in it….and then julianne hough to be AVA…Please DEAR Marty(God) do the Right thing….
Worried Out
If you think that the Sinatras don’t have casting consultation if not approval of who plays their father you’re Peter Lawford. That’s my guess.
Justin Timberlake will get talked up, but he’s not a very good actor and I can’t imagine Scorsese signing up for that.
Harry Connick Jr. would be great.
Channing Tatum?…Just kidding., it’ll be Leo…and he looks the part more than any other actor I could think of.
It’s best if they go with an unknown, but this may go the way of Scorsese’s Gershwin film and rat pack film. He said this would be “impressionistic” in one interview, so one may assume this would not be a conventional biopic just as Raging Bull was not. Tina produced the TV bio film some years ago as well.
It all depends on what era of his career the script focuses on. But my pic to play Sinatra is Patrick Wilson. He’s got the eyes and he can sing. He’s also go the MPB necessary. He’s a little tall for the part, but they can cheat that. So if we’re hurling guesses around, my vote is Patrick Wilson.
I think we need to throw singing talent out the window here. It would be blasphemous to have an actor, regardless of how well he can sing, to cover Frank’s songs. They are going to have to lip sync — period, end of story. In which case, I think you have to consider some one who looks close to Sinatra (who was attractive mostly for his voice and his swagger, not his appearance) and someone who can act, which a capital “A.” Granted his eyes are brown (but contacts can fix that), I think the best choice for this role is Sam Rockwell.
Sam Rockwell can pull off anything! Great idea.
They’re remaking “The Secret in Their Eyes”? Uggh. Enough, already. And Patrick Wilson? Since when was Sinatra Irish? At least Leo is heading in the right direction ethnically speaking.
Since when is Abraham Lincoln British? Since when is Superman British? Or Spiderman? Since this year. Hollywood, sadly, doesn’t care about matching the ethnic origins of the actor and the character anymore. I agree with you, Jace, that Sinatra should be played by an Italian actor. I was trying to guess who the studio would choose…not who I think should play it.
Al Pacino for sinatra hooooooooooooooooooooooooo haaa
Biopics of big stars already well documented in the film and video record tend to be exercises in futility.
True.
I vote for an unknown, since I’m sick of seeing Leo’s face in Scorsese movies. But really, I’d rather see the Dean Martin bio (although that would be equally tough to cast).
The two-part MTV biopic from 1992 starring Phil Casnoff as Frank Sinatra was supposed to be quite good, lavishly produced and very well acted. Anybody on here seen it?
I did and it was pretty generic. They used both Sinatra recordings and versions by an Australian imitator. It was for NBC not MTV, so it was obviously up against standards & practices. Marcia Gay Hayden played Ava, and was as unconvincing (although a fine actress) as Beckinsale in The Aviator.
Pray it never happens. He deserves to remain without leeches. Bogey, Wayne,Flynn, and WHO?
Please god don’t let Marty cast Leonardo in the lead!
I dont know who should play Sinatra but I think Penn Badgley should play Dean Martin. He can really sing. All you gotta do is go on youtube is search for his Lilac Wine cover
