The 69-year-old Hoskins was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease last autumn. In a statement released today his agent
said Hoskins was setting aside a “wonderful career” to spend time with his family. “He wishes to thank all the great and brilliant people he has worked with over the years, and all of his fans who have supported him”, the statement said.
Hoskins received an Oscar nomination for his 1987 turn in Neil Jordan’s Mona Lisa, which earned him a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for Best Actor. His other film credits include The Long Good Friday, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Mrs. Henderson Presents. He also appeared in the 1978 TV mini-series Pennies From Heaven. His last role was in Snow White And The Huntsman, released earlier this year, in which he played one of the dwarves. Hoskins skipped that film’s premieres and promotion.

I first saw Mr. Hoskins play Owney Madden in The Cotton Club in 1984. It became one of my favorite movies, and his scenes with the late Fred Gwynn were classic. Thanks for a wonderful career, Sir Bob. You rule.
“Shake f$#%ing hands!!”
An exquisite, beloved actor. I have confidence we’ll see you again, Mr. Hoskins. Stay well.
Mr. Hoskins’ performance as “Harold” in The Long Good Friday is one of the most brilliant and sexy I have ever seen. The look on his face in the last scene when his character finally understands what has happened is priceless. Thank goodness his work will be preserved!
one of the very best!!!
I saw him when WNET-13 in NYC ran Pennies from Heaven originally. I knew he’d be a huge star. And The Long Good Friday only confirmed that. He did great work.
Such a terrific actor who had that great intensity and talent for both drama and comedy.
“Long Good Friday” was terrific because of him. Hoskins certainly not a tall man, but you couldn’t see that film and think of his “Harold” as anything but scary and all business and not to be messed with.
Cheers to a great career.
Such a loss to the acting world. He has such charisma and charm and stood out in everything he did.
I feel so sad but he is in my thoughts, such a hard thing to have to deal with…
Love this man…truly an amazing actor. Recently rewatched Hollywoodland and genuinely was scared of his character. Good times.
