An extension of California’s $100 million annual film and television tax credit program leaped through another legislative hurdle today. With a 32-3 vote in Sacramento, the state Senate approved extending the program two more years. The measure, sponsored by Senator Ron Calderon, now heads over to the Assembly for a vote there. “As a coalition of unions, guilds and associations representing hundreds of thousands of men and women whose livelihoods depend on the strength of the California entertainment industry, we applaud the passage of SB 1167 by the California State Senate,” said SAG-AFTRA, the Teamsters, IATSE, the Director’s Guild and others in a joint statement after the vote Tuesday. The state Assembly passed a version of the extension legislation in a 70-4 vote on August 16. Eventually, the two bodies will have to work out a joint version of the extension. The current tax credit is set to end in 2015 if the latest proposed extension does not become law. The tax credit program was put in place in 2009 to help halt the exodus of production from California to other states and to Canadian provinces that offer strong incentives to TV shows and feature films. In early June, 28 projects were picked by lottery to be allocated this year’s $100 million. Among those projects that got the lucky tickets were the relocating television series Teen Wolf, as well as Pretty Little Liars and Justified.

unbelievable. we can NOT compete with a 100 million dollar credit for two years. especially with a competing 420 mil credit in NY. we’re just giving our industry away… sad.
Bringing a slingshot to a gun fight…good luck!
Not much left in California except Mexico
Added the unions, “Corporate welfare is only evil when we aren’t the beneficiaries. Trickle-down economics only works when we are involved, and anyone who says differently is a racist. Now we continue our mission of collecting dues from members, while ignoring their residual payments.”
Normally I am all for this since it helps keep the film biz in California, but isn’t this a bit hypocritical of our democrats in California? I thought they were against giving tax breaks to the wealthy? Isn’t that what Obama and the rest of the democrats are against? Especially since they want the average Joe to cough up more money in a sales tax. Arghhhhhh the hypocrisy is to much to bare!
The problem is that other states are offering huge tax credits to the entertainment industry to film their projects in their state generating LOTS of income (subject to personal sales tax and income tax) NOT to mention a possible INCREASE in Tourism to the state!
California HAS TO COMPETE with these. Thus the comments above joking how it is not enough. IF California can keep the jobs IN CALIFORNIA it benefits the state by employment (income tax) AND local businesses who collect sales tax. Otherwise it is just going to another state and California loses out completely (well almost).
People need to think about how the affects of “big business” suppression trickles down to “the people”. Do you really think that putting more taxes on “big corporations” is going to do anything? The company HAS TO SURVIVE or it collapses and everyone loses their jobs. SO… that money they have to pay extra will come out of somewhere else… like cutting JOBS! .. Hence why there is such a high un-employment rate RIGHT NOW! Think about it.. if you had to pay more taxes .. would you be spending more money.. say hiring a maid to clean your house? Perhaps you fire the maid. … that’s the point. If the company you work for gets a tax break .. then they hire more people or maybe pay more to retain employees from leaving to another company offering more because they got the tax break too… then you have more to spend… at the store (sales tax for the state) or maybe you rehire that maid! Now she has more money to spend (sales tax for the state) … so that tax break to the company could translate to MORE taxes raised to the state.
Why do you think the state is broke? .. history dictates that answer. Also.. the big question that only a handful know… where is the state receiving the money to pay the state’s government workers?
THINK… that is all people need to do. Think about all aspects… how one thing affects another.
